"Alright." Lucas did as he was told, grabbing a pot out of the cabinets to give to Melissa. "Here."
"Alright." Lucas did as he was told, grabbing a pot out of the cabinets to give to Melissa. "Here."
"Thanks…" Melissa mumbled, filling it up with water. Setting it on top of the stove, she continued to busy herself in the kitchen, despite not having much to do.
"No problem. What do you want me to do?" He asked, fidgeting a bit where he stood near Melissa.
"I dunno…" Melissa mumbled, grabbing glasses to fill them up with water to drink from. "You could salt the water, I guess." She mumbled, brushing loose hairs out of her face.
"Alright." Lucas did as he was told, putting a bit of salt in the water with a soft hum. "Do you think that's enough?"
"Yeah, probably…" Melissa mumbled, turning with the glasses in her hands. Bringing them over to the table, she turned back to Lucas glancing at the pot before nodding. "Alright… guess we wait then."
"Mhmm." Lucas reached out to take Melissa's hand and sighed softly. "We're gonna be fine, love… we're gonna be fine…"
Melissa flinched a little when he took her hand, fidgeting in place. "Yeah… we're gonna be fine." She mumbled, keeping a loose hold on his hand.
"Are you okay, Mel?" Lucas asked softly, noticing her flinch. "Did I hurt you?"
"No- no, I'm fine… just fidgety." Melissa shrugged, glancing around the room mindlessly. "I didn't mean to flinch."
"Okay…" Lucas didn't seem entirely convinced, but didn't question her further. "When do you think the food will be done?"
"I dunno… fifteen minutes, probably," Melissa mumbled, taking a couple of small steps closer to him. "I don't know for sure."
"Alright." Lucas pulled Melissa closer to himself and rested his head on her shoulder. "I love you."
"Love you too…" Melissa mumbled, taking a couple of seconds to relax. Gently she wrapped her arms around his waist, letting out a soft sigh. "M'sorry…"
"What for, love?" He asked softly, still holding tightly to her. "You haven't done anything wrong."
"I just… I guess I'm sorry about the whole situation. And just- I dunno… I feel useless to you." Melissa whispered weakly, shoulders slumping some.
"You're not useless, Mel… you're very helpful. I love you a lot." Lucas gently kissed Melissa's cheek.
"But… but I feel useless right now. With everything going on, I can't do anything about it." Melissa insisted, burying her face in his shoulder. "And I'm sorry. Because I want to help, but I can't."
"You're not useless, Mel… I promise. You're gonna help take me to work and bring me gone so she can't bother me."
“But that doesn’t solve your problem.” Melissa insisted, pulling back to look at him. “It’s barely doing anything… and- I just- what if something happens to you? What if- if I’m not able to be there, or I’m running late, and… and something happens?”
"It wouldn't be your fault, Mel. You can't be there all the time. You have to do work and stuff as well." Lucas shrugged a bit.
“How could it not be?” Melissa retorted, seeming quite a bit more worried about it than Lucas was. “I- I mean, I’m the one that’s supposed to get you. So- if… if I screw up on such a simple task, how could you not blame me? And- and I wouldn’t even blame you if you hated me and… and wanted to leave. Because- I’m just…” Melissa was trembling a bit, trying her best to calm down.
"Shh, shh…" Lucas pulled Melissa close. "Because you can't be with me 24/7, and I don't expect you to be. If she bothers me while I'm working, you can't do much about it. You're there to pick me up and drop me off. I would never want to leave you, especially over something that's not even your fault."
Melissa buried her face in his shoulder when he pulled her back, trying to keep from crying. “B-but… I… what- what if you get hurt because I wasn’t there when I was supposed to be? And… and I had no reason to not be there on time?” She mumbled, her voice muffled by his shoulder.
"Mel, things happen… I wouldn't blame you." Lucas sighed and rested his head against Melissa's. "None of this is your fault, okay?"
“R-right… but- but what if something does happen to you?” Melissa asked softly, lifting her head. “Even if it’s not my fault- what… what if you get hurt? I- I don’t want that to happen to you…”
Lucas shrugged a bit. "I'd heal. I'd be okay eventually, yeah?" He smiled weakly. "I've been hurt before, so I'm sure she couldn't do anything that bad to me."
Melissa’s heart dropped some, his statement not really making her feel any better. “But- but still…” She insisted, hesitantly taking both of his hands. “I- I don’t want you to have to go through that again.”
"I know, Mel, and I probably won't. I don't think she wants to hurt me, necessarily. I think she's more interested in… something else…"
Melissa let out a weak sigh, resting her head back on his shoulder. “Right…” She mumbled, wrapping her arms around his waist. Keeping a loose hold on him, she quietly rubbed circles into his back as she hugged him.
