Been reading through JK Rowling’s Twitter, which I think counts as emotional self harm because I knew there would be TERF shit and what did I get? TERF shit.

Fuck JK Rowling, go check out Rick Riordan. I don't have Twitter so I don't know what his is like but given the characters in his books and the fact that he's just not a shit person in general, it'll definitely be leaps and bounds better

Oh, I have Receipts agains Rick too, but this probably isn’t the best place to share them. If his books mean a lot to you, I won’t stop you from enjoying them!

Honestly my main issue with Alex is that they’re always expected to educate on their identity no matter the context and they always sound like a kindergarten teacher whilst doing it. I have no serious issues with that character but I’ve heard that their portrayal as a POC could have been much better than it was but since I’m white I can’t really speak on that. Otherwise yeah, I agree, I think they’re neat!

But again I probably shouldn’t be shoving my weird opinions in here so… I’ll shut up.

lol I have issues with a lot of Rick's representation so,,,
I read up on it earlier and honestly as someone who grew up Muslim, Samirah's character felt weird and now I actually know why

why?

her arranged marriage mostly
arranged marriages aren't inherently bad or anything and it's more of a cultural thing rather than religion altho the two are closely related
but the thing is no one has an arranged marriage at twelve years old
It just puts on harmful stereotypes for Muslims and arranged marriages in general but there's almost nowhere that would actually allow a twelve year old in one and saying they would adds to the idea of child brides in these cultures
not to mention the reason for the marriage was out of shame since her mother died and her father was someone she didn't know
and the way she would try to justify it was kinda weird.n "yeah I liked Amir tho so I was really happy"
also her taking off her hijab because she thought of Magnus and Alex and everyone else as "family" was just kinda dumb cuz it doesn't work like that
also, I think the fact that when people criticized Rick on these things (and more) he basically went "oh well I think I'm right and I did my research" if you'd done research you'd know more about arranged marriages sir which really doesn't sit right cuz that's not the right reaction to criticism

I love his books but you have to be able to criticize it and hold authors accountable for ignorant or problematic writing (even if it wasn't intentional)
