Lucas eyed Cody warily and hesitated before heading up the stairs. What is he wanting me to do?
Lucas eyed Cody warily and hesitated before heading up the stairs. What is he wanting me to do?
Cody trotted over to the door, digging at it with his paws. He continued to whine, quite obviously wanting to go in. The quiet arguing had gotten considerably louder by now, but their voices muffled.
"No, you don't need to go in there, Cody…" Lucas whispered, picking Cody up and holding him close to try and keep him quiet.
Cody's whining only got louder when pulled away, squirming in his arms again. When Lucas didn't let him go, he eventually dropped his chin on Lucas's shoulder, while still whimpering.
"What's up with you today?" Lucas sighed softly and started carrying Cody back down the stairs.
When Lucas sat back down on the couch, Cody curled up on his lap. Occasionally he let out a whine but was pretty quiet besides that.
Lucas curled up on the couch to wait for Melissa, keeping Cody close to himself. "She'll be back soon… we'll be okay…"
It was late in the evening when the front door had unlocked, Melissa quietly walking through the door frame. Completely drained, she managed to pull her shoes off, leaving them to sit by the door. Setting both her grocery bag and purse down, she pulled off her coat with a weak sigh, mumbling under her breath.
"Mmm…?" Lucas stirred a bit when Melissa came in, obviously only about half awake. "Oh, Mel… you're back…" He sat up and yawned, running his fingers through his hair.
Melissa had had her back facing him, letting out a slight squeak when he addressed her. The grogginess in his tone, and with how tired she was, it took her a second to recognize who it was. “Lu… hey…” She mumbled, relaxing after a couple seconds. “Why are you up?”
"To be fair, I'm not super awake to begin with…" Lucas rubbed at his eyes and sighed. "What time is it?" He asked softly.
Melissa let out a soft sigh, glancing at her wrist watch. “After midnight. My shift ended late, and I had to go to the store.” She mumbled her explanation for being home so late.
"Mm…" Lucas looked down at his bandaged hands and remembered what he'd done, his stomach sinking. "How was your shift?"
“Kind of terrible, not gonna lie.” Melissa muttered, rubbing at her eyes with a heavy sigh. “Everyone seemed bitter, and I couldn’t manage to do anything right. Everyone seemed mad at me. But I could just be tired, and extra sensitive.” She muttered, hanging her coat up.
"Ah… I'm sorry about that, love…" Lucas toyed with the bandages on his hands, seeming pretty uneasy and shaky.
Melissa shrugged, walking around to sit on the couch besides him. “It’s not like it’s your fault… I’ll be over it tomorrow, but it’s fresh in my mind right now. So it kind of stings.” She mumbled, looking over to him. Only now had she noticed how shaky and jittery he was. “Hey- what’s wrong?” She asked softly, seeming to tense up.
"Um… n-nothing, really, I just…" Lucas paused before starting to unravel the bandages. He had bandages on his left hand as well, although he had only punched the wall with his right.
Melissa’s gaze feel on his hands, heart sinking in her chest. “What happened while o was gone…? Are- are you okay?” She asked weakly, scooting closer to him.
Lucas managed to pull off the bandages and looked down at his hand, trembling slightly. "It's… it's really not all that bad, I-I just figured I should let you know…" his hands were covered in small cuts; big enough to bleed and hurt, but not big enough to do any real damage. His palms seemed to have taken the brunt of the damage.
Melissa gently took his hand, studying it with tired eyes. Glancing up at him, she nodded just barely, being careful with him so she couldn’t hurt him. “Yeah, thanks… I- when… when did this happen?” She asked weakly, letting go of his hand as she lifted her head to look at him. “Did- did something trigger it?”
"It was pretty soon after you left…" Lucas looked away guiltily. "I just… I was really stuck thinking about my dad and what he said to me and when though I know it's stupid I just… couldn't stop myself…"
Melissa let out a weak sigh, reaching over to tip his chin up. She gave him a tired smile, keeping her eyes on him. "You know I'm not mad, right? I'm not even upset, I'm just worried about you okay?" She stated softly, running her thumb over his cheek.
"I… I-I know…" Lucas closed his eyes and leaned into Melissa's hand. "I just… I-I wanted to do it in the moment, so I did, and now I can't go back and fix it…"
"You're right, you can't go back and fix it… but that doesn't matter," Melissa whispered, gently pulling his hand up to kiss his knuckles. "We really should find something you can do instead of hurting yourself when you feel like that…"
"R-Right…" Lucas winced a bit when Melissa touched his hand and looked away. "Cody was acting strange as well…"
Melissa's smile dropped when he winced, letting go of his hand again. "Sorry…" She mumbled, glancing down at Cody. "Do you have any idea why he was acting strange? And like, strange how?"
"I don't know why he was… I mean, he seemed worried after I hurt my hands, but that's pretty normal. Then he kept going to the stairs until I followed him, and then he seemed like he wanted me to go into your parents' room where they were talking…"
Melissa's brow furrowed, reaching down to pet Cody. "I wonder why… that does seem strange." She mumbled, glancing back up at Lucas.
"Mhmm. And he was scratching at the door… I'm not sure why he wanted to go in there. It was really weird."
"That really is weird…" Melissa mumbled, gently picking Cody up to hold him. "What's gotten into you?"
