"I love you too, Mel…" Lucas waved and sighed, staring down at his hands for a while after Melissa left. After several minutes, he came back out with his hands more heavily bandaged than before.

Mr. Brennahan was in the kitchen, mind distant as he stood at the sink to wash dishes. He hadn't heard Lucas, and really didn't seem to notice he had come downstairs.

Lucas quietly headed into the kitchen and opened the pantry to find himself the ingredients to make a sandwich. He nodded in greeting to Mr. Brennahan, but didn't seem to be much in the mood for chatting.

Mr. Brennahan caught sight of Lucas, giving him a light smile before he shut off the water. Setting the dishes on a rack to dry, he picked up a glass to sip from his water. "You alright?"

"Yeah, I'm… I'm fine…" Lucas replied softly, offering a weak smile to Mr. Brennahan to try and reassure him. His eyes were dull and he seemed tired as he made himself a sandwich.

"Right…" He nodded, seeming unsure by his response. But he didn't push it, not wanting to make Lucas uncomfortable. "Well, if you need me, you can always come to talk to me, alright?"

"R-Right… thank you, sir." Lucas dipped his head politely and turned away, not comfortable making eye contact with Mr. Brennahan at the moment.

Mr. Brennahan nodded a bit, bringing his water into the living room. Sitting down on the couch, he pulled his laptop out to work.

Lucas sighed softly in relief when Mr. Brennahan didn't push the subject and headed outside to eat. He figured fresh air would still do him some good, but it was too cold for him to stay out for too long.

When Lucas went outside, Cody came out not long after. He whimpered, resting his head on Lucas’s thighs. The puppy looked up at him, continuing to whimper.

"Hi, Cody… I know… I'm sorry…" Lucas sighed softly and pulled Cody into his lap, burying his face in the puppy's fur. "I'm sorry…"

Cody continued to whimper and whine as Lucas held onto him. He started to paw at him, continuing to whine.

"What's wrong?" Lucas asked softly. "I know I hurt my hands, but… you seem more upset than usual." He gently pet Cody, growing uneasy at the puppy's worry.

Cody continued to whimper, as they sat there. Not long after, the puppy’s ears perked up before a car door being shut was heard from the front yard. Since Melissa had left not long ago, it couldn’t possibly be her. So it was most likely Mrs. Brennahan getting home from work.

Lucas jumped a bit at the sharp sound and looked around. That can't be good… I haven't interacted with her in a while. He hesitated before getting up, holding Cody close to his chest as he headed into the house.

Mr. Brennahan was still sitting in the living room, eyes glued to the computer screen. He looked frustrated, and tired. When he heard the front door unlock, he let out a weak sigh glancing over to where his wife walked through. “Hi, honey. How was work?” He asked softly, setting his computer aside. Shrugging a bit in response, she hung up her keys and purse by the door. “Alright.” Was her blunt response as she walked through the living room towards the kitchen.

Lucas came in through the back door, keeping Cody held firmly in his arms. He eyed Mrs. Brennahan warily and veered towards the living room, trusting Mr. Brennahan far more.

The woman hadn't even taken a second to look at Lucas, as she started to work on something to eat for herself. Mr. Brennahan started to get up, glancing at Lucas with a light smile. "Everything alright?" He asked Lucas, before slowly making his way into the kitchen. He glanced over to Mrs. Brennahan before focusing on Lucas.

"Um…" Lucas paused for a moment, his eyes following Mr. Brennahan. "Y-Yeah, everything's fine…" He lied softly. "Melissa will be back in a couple hours, yeah?"

"Yeah… yeah she should be." Mr. Brennahan nodded, leaning against the wall some. "Is there something you need from her? I know it's not the same, but I can try to help."

"W-Well, I… not really, um…" Lucas stammered nervously, trying to subtly hide his bandaged hands. "There's not really much either of you could do… you don't have to worry about it."

Mr. Brennahan eyed him with a look of suspicion but didn't comment on it. If he wanted to tell him, he would. Or he assumed at least. "Right… well, um… yeah." He nodded a bit, glancing back over to Mrs. Brennahan. "Melissa should be back tonight. She said she might be a little later because she needed to stop by the store first."

"Thanks, sir…" Lucas pulled Cody closer to himself and looked away, feeling guilty for lying to Mr. Brennahan's face. He paused before turning and walking off to quietly sit on the couch.

Mr. Brennahan nodded his head a bit before walking into the kitchen. Talking in a lower tone, he and Mrs. Brennahan conversed as she made herself food. It wasn't long until she left the kitchen with an angry huff. She wasn't quite stomping as she made her way up the stairs, but it was pretty close. Continuing to mutter things under her breath as she ascended the stairs, Mr. Brennahan started to follow after her, not far behind her up the stairs.
Cody started to whimper when the adults disappeared upstairs, squirming in Lucas's arms.

Lucas worriedly watched Melissa's parents arguing and shifted nervously. He glanced down at Cody when he whined and let the puppy go in case he wanted to be free. "What's wrong, Cody?"

Cody rather quickly hopped off Lucas's lap, making his way over to the stairs. Sitting at the bottom of the stairs, he continued to whimper as he stared up the stairs where they had disappeared to.

"You shouldn't bother them, Cody… it's none of our business." Lucas sighed softly as he watched the puppy. "Come back over here. We'll wait for Melissa."

Cody didn't move, ears flat against his head as he continued to whine. Putting both of his front paws on the bottom step, he looked back over to Lucas.

"What do you want, Cody?" Lucas got up and walked over to Cody. "You know you're big enough to get up the stairs by yourself if that's what you're wanting."

When Lucas came up to him, Cody immediately went up the stairs, sitting at the top as if he was waiting for Lucas to follow him. His head was turned back towards the voices coming from Melissa's parent's room.
