Lucas nodded weakly, getting out as well and taking Melissa's hand as soon as she was close enough. He seemed uneasy and conflicted, but he kept quiet for the time being.
Lucas nodded weakly, getting out as well and taking Melissa's hand as soon as she was close enough. He seemed uneasy and conflicted, but he kept quiet for the time being.
Mr. Brennahan glanced over at the two, giving a weak smile before pushing the door open. "Can you two wrap up Lucas's hand?" He asked as he pulled his coat and shoes off. Melissa nodded just a little, keeping her fingers loosely intertwined with Lucas's. "Yeah, I can…" She mumbled, leading him up the stairs.
Lucas quietly followed Melissa upstairs, glancing down at his hand. It wasn't actively bleeding anymore, but his knuckles were still bruised and stained with dry blood.
"Can you sit over there?" Melissa asked softly, pointing to the edge of the tub. Grabbing the first aid kit out of the cabinet, she turned to face him. "I need to get you cleaned up, but it might hurt…"
"Right…" Lucas sat down on the edge of the tub, seeming a bit nervous. He was used to this kind of pain, but that didn't mean he looked forward to it.
Melissa had kneeled down on the floor in front of him, being gentle as she took his hand. "You ready?" She asked softly, holding a cotton pad in her hand to clean off his hand.
Lucas nodded and held his hand out to Melissa, his fingers trembling lightly. "I'm still really sorry about everything, love…"
Melissa shook her head a bit, being careful as she cleaned his hand up. "It's fine, really… you don't have to apologize." She mumbled, eyes glued to his hand.
Lucas bit down on his lip to keep quiet while Melissa cleaned his hand. "I feel bad, though… I shouldn't have dragged you into all of that. I should've been able to control myself."
Letting out a soft sigh, Melissa started to pick up bandages to wrap his hand with. "Maybe you should have, but I'm not upset with you, alright? You were angry, for a good reason too, and sometimes you just have to get it out."
Lucas looked away while Melissa bandaged his hand, fidgeting uneasily. "I'm supposed to be finding better ways to manage my emotions, though, and I… I failed…"
“Lucas, it was just this one time. It’s not like you act like that all the time.” Melissa insisted, finishing wrapping his hand. “You were provoked, it’s human nature to react like that. Maybe not as extreme, but like I’ve said, you’ve never acted like that before. Do you really think it’s going to be a regular thing?”
"It shouldn't be, no… I-I mean, assuming I don't ever see my dad again, I wouldn't be surprised if it never happened again."
Melissa nodded a little, getting up and sitting beside him on the edge of the tub. Gently she dropped her head on his shoulder, glancing up at him. “I won’t make you… ever. I promise.”
"Thanks, Mel…" Lucas gently kissed Melissa and huddled close to her. "I love you…" He murmured.
“I love you too…” Melissa whispered, nuzzling against his cheek just a little. “I have to go to work in a couple minutes… you gonna be okay while I’m gone? You want me to make you something to eat?”
"I'll be okay… and I can probably make something for myself. Might just go outside to get some fresh air, honestly…"
Melissa nodded a little, kissing his cheek before nuzzling up closer. “You should… you should bring Cody with you too.” She hummed, hugging him tighter.
"Yeah…" Lucas rested his head on Melissa's shoulder and sighed. "It's been a long day… I'm honestly just exhausted…"
“I’d say you should head to be early tonight, but that didn’t go so well last night…” Melissa mumbled, lacing her fingers with his. “But I’m not gonna tell you what to do. You can go to bed if you’re tired.”
"Right… I'll try not to go to bed as early as I did last night, but I'll hopefully be asleep by the time you get home from work."
"Hopefully, yeah…" Melissa mumbled, still gently nuzzling against him. "I really don't want to go to work… I'm already kind of drained from today."
"Yeah… I think I work tomorrow, so that'll be an experience." Lucas sighed softly.
"On a Saturday?" Melissa asked softly, shoulders dropping some. "I'm guessing for the flower shop, right?"
Lucas nodded a bit. "Yeah. The assistant coach thing doesn't start back up until school does, so…"
"Yeah… you're probably scheduled for the middle of the day, aren't you?" Melissa mumbled, fidgeting with her hands. "And I've got work that evening…"
"Yeah… we probably won't see a ton of each other tomorrow." Lucas sighed and fidgeted a bit as well.
Melissa let out a slight sigh before starting to get up. "Well, I should probably be going… do you need anything from me before I go?"
Lucas paused before shaking his head. "No, I'm… I'm fine. Have a good shift, Mel." He smiled weakly up at her.
Giving Lucas a gentle smile in return, she kissed him before walking away. "I'll try my best… I love you."
