"That would be preferred, if you really don't mind." Melissa glanced over to him, grabbing his arm when she stumbled. "I- um… we can do that as soon as we get home. Or we can't wait a little bit if you'd rather."
"That would be preferred, if you really don't mind." Melissa glanced over to him, grabbing his arm when she stumbled. "I- um… we can do that as soon as we get home. Or we can't wait a little bit if you'd rather."
"We can do it right when we get home… might as well get it over with, yeah?" Lucas took Melissa's hand and started walking with her.
Melissa nodded in agreement, leaning against him as they kept walking. "Yeah, probably a good idea… we can do whatever afterward." She hummed, glancing up at him.
"Mhmm." Lucas glanced around a bit as they walked, keeping a tight grip on Melissa's hand. "We should be home soon."
"Mm… yeah. We should probably check on Cody when we get home…" Melissa mumbled, gently pulling his arm over her shoulders. "Make sure he's okay, too… we kinda just left him at home."
Lucas nodded a bit. "Yeah. Maybe he's been hanging out with your dad? He can tell when people are stressed."
"Maybe… he's a good boy, that's probably what he's doing." Melissa hummed softly, glancing up at him.
"Mhmm." Lucas kept walking with Melissa until they reached the house. "You ready?"
Melissa looked up at him, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "As long as you are. I can do it by myself if you don't want to be there." She stated in a soft tone, face flushed from the cold.
"Nah, I really should go with you, Mel…" Lucas sighed softly and led Melissa inside. "We can do this."
Melissa nodded a bit, letting go of his hand once they were inside. Taking off her coat and shoes, she let them sit by the front door, offering to help Lucas with his. “When we’re done we can come curl up on the couch, if you want.”
Lucas nodded a bit and did the same, putting both of their coats in the closet. "Alright. Let's go talk to him, then." He headed up the stairs and knocked on Mr. Brennahan's door.
Melissa gently took his hand once again, staying at his side when he knocked on the door. After a couple seconds, Mr. Brennahan came to the door, gently pulling it open. Catching sight of Lucas and Melissa, he gave a weak smile. “Hey, how was your time out?”
"It was good… um… could we talk to you for a minute?" Lucas asked softly, already growing more uneasy. He was starting to regret his decision, but he didn't want to go back on it now.
Melissa gave Lucas's hand a gentle squeeze, looking up at him with a weak smile. "I- um… of course. Is something wrong?" Mr. Brennahan asked softly, pulling the door open some more. When it was pulled open, Cody was seen laying near the desk, asleep for the time being. Though he barely even glanced at the puppy as he went back around his desk, shutting his laptop and stacking papers. His mind seemed preoccupied as he listened to Lucas, trying his best to pay attention to both Lucas and whatever was stressing him out.
"W-Well, I… um… not necessarily…" Lucas followed Mr. Brennahan into the office and sighed softly. "I just… I-I decided that I wanna visit my dad…" He looked away, running his fingers through his hair. He was obviously stressed, and had started trembling again.
Melissa had started to rub his shoulders some when he started to shake, trying not to interrupt. Mr. Brennahan glanced up at Lucas, seeming caught off guard at his statement. "You- you want to go see your dad?" He asked softly, setting down the stuff that he had stacked in his hands. "Like- right now? You want me to take you there right now?" He asked, still taken aback by his request.
"N-Not necessarily like, right this second, but…" Lucas shifted uncomfortably, still not able to meet Mr. Brennahan's eyes. "I'm… I'm not exactly sure how it all works… do we have to make an appointment, or do we just…? D-Do we just go…?"
"Well, um… I'm pretty sure you can just go, as long as you go during visiting hours. I'd have to look into it more, but I'm sure we can get it all sorted out." Mr. Brennahan replied, fiddling with a pen. Melissa looked up at Lucas with a weak smile, gently wrapping an arm around his waist. "How soon did you want to go?"
"Um… soon, I guess? I-I wanna go before I change my mind about it…" Lucas tugged at the collar of his shirt a bit, his breathing growing a bit heavier. "Is it hot in here? It feels hot in here…"
Mr. Brennahan glanced up at Lucas from where he was writing, giving him a worried look. "Are- are you okay? Do you want to go sit down?" He asked softly, taking a couple of steps over to where he stood. "You don't have to stay in here if you don't want to talk about this anymore."
"I-I'm just gonna… u-um…" Lucas put one hand against the wall to support himself, his eyelids fluttering a bit. His vision was hazy and he'd started shaking harder. I knew I shouldn't have let myself think too much about it… now I'm worrying them… oh god…
"Lucas," Melissa whispered weakly, genty reaching up to hold his face. "Honey, I think you need to sit down." She insisted, pulling a chair back for him to sit in. Mr. Brennahan watched him nervously willing to help if he needed it. "Come on babe, you… you don't look too great."
"I-I'm sorry, um… I'm fine, really…" Lucas whispered weakly, clearly a bit out of it as Melissa ushered him into the chair. He winced and brought one hand up to his throat, which felt like it was closing up. His breathing sounded labored and raspy by now, but he was still trying to force himself to calm down so Melissa and her father wouldn't have to deal with him.
Melissa kneeled down in front of him, looking up at him with worried eyes. She kept one hand on top of his free hand, gently reaching up to hold onto his arm in case things started to get worse. "You don't have to apologize, Lucas. Just take your time and try to relax, okay? You're gonna be just fine."
"R-Right…" Lucas kept breathing as well as he could, using specific breathing patterns that had helped him in the past. "S-Sorry, I… I shouldn't have… um… s-shouldn't have let myself think so much… that was stupid of me…"
"It's fine, Lu…" Melissa whispered, lacing her fingers with his. She gave him a weak look, resting her chin on his knee. "Is there anything I can to help you relax?" She asked softly, glancing over to Mr. Brennahan. He stepped back away from Lucas, going back to his desk.
"I just need a minute, sorry…" Lucas sighed shakily, running his fingers through his hair. "We can leave if you want, sir. I don't want to distract you any more than I already have."
"Don't worry about it, you're fine." Mr. Brennahan mumbled, already caught back up in his work. He grew quiet as he scribbled out on different pieces of paper, not trying to ignore them completely. "You're not a bother." He mumbled, glancing up at the two of them for only a couple of seconds before going back to his work.
He's probably just saying that to try and make me feel less bad… Lucas sighed and looked down at his hands, which were still shaking. "Do you want to head downstairs, Mel…?"
