Melissa kept a hold on his hands, running her thumb across the back of his hand. “You gonna be okay?” She asked softly, pressing her lips to his knuckles again.
Melissa kept a hold on his hands, running her thumb across the back of his hand. “You gonna be okay?” She asked softly, pressing her lips to his knuckles again.
Lucas nodded and flushed a bit harder, obviously flustered. Well, at least I'm warmer, I guess… He looked away and cleared his throat nervously.
Melissa gave him a weak smile, staying curled up besides him. “Mm… we should get hot chocolate when we get home.” She mumbled, resting her chin on his shoulder.
Lucas nodded a bit, adjusting his grip on Melissa's hands. "Y-Yeah, that would be nice…" He took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
“You sure you’re okay?” Melissa asked softly, reaching up to play with his hair. “You sound kinda off… we can go home if you want to. I don’t mind.”
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine…" Lucas leaned into Melissa's hand a bit and sighed softly. "I dunno what's up with me… extra finicky today, I guess. My brain's stupid like that."
“Well, that’s okay… I just wanted to make sure I didn’t upset you…” Melissa mumbled, resting her head back on his shoulder. “You know you can tell me if I do, right?”
Lucas nodded and shifted a bit closer. "Yeah, I know… you just surprised me a bit and we both know I can't handle any amount of affection without turning into a tomato, so…"
Melissa gave him a weak smile, laughing softly at his statement. "Yeah… is it because it bothers you? Or is it just… you're not used to it?"
"It doesn't bother me, I just… I guess I'm not used to it…?" Lucas shifted a bit, a light pink flush rising to his cheeks again. "I'm real sensitive to it, I guess."
"That makes sense, I guess…" Melissa mumbled, yawning a bit as she rested her head against him. "I probably would be too…"
"Mm…" Lucas was quiet for a while, fidgeting with his hands as he stared down at the grass. "I… um…" He began after a bit. "I-I think I should visit my dad."
Melissa, taken off guard, looked up at him bewildered. "I… why all of a sudden? Not that I think you shouldn't, I just- it seems really… random." She mumbled, sitting up in his arms to give him her full attention.
"I-I dunno, I just…" Lucas paused before sighing heavily. "I've been thinking about it a lot lately, and I really think I should go… I-I wanna hear his side of it, you know? While he's… while he's not drunk…"
Melissa looked up at him with a weak smile. "Yeah of course… I can talk to my dad, and try and get everything set up." She whispered, wrapping her arms around him gently, pulling him into a hug. "Is this part of the reason everything has been a little… sensitive the past couple of days?"
"I… um…" Lucas thought for a few seconds, not entirely sure. "Maybe… I guess I was pretty preoccupied with what I'd even want to say to him." He laughed weakly. "God, I'm already jittery… I hope this is a good idea…"
Melissa smiled weakly, pulling back to look up at him. "Well, if it helps at all, I can be there too. If you want me to be." She offered gently, taking hold of his hand again. "Or I can just be outside… if you don't want me intruding."
"Well, I think I'd like you to come with me, but… I should probably talk to him one on one." Lucas sighed shakily, already quivering at the thought. "We've… got some things to work out."
Melissa nodded again, reaching up to hold his face in her hand. "You're gonna be okay, I promise. He won't be able to hurt you…" She whispered, holding onto his hand tightly.
Lucas nodded weakly and closed his eyes, leaning into Melissa's gentle touch. "I want to know what excuse he's got for treating me like shit for years…"
"Do you have any idea where you're going to start?" Melissa asked softly, not pulling away quite yet. "I- I mean… you've probably got more to talk about than I know."
"Um… I feel like it's gonna be a bit awkward regardless. It could go any number of ways, you know?" Lucas sighed softly. "Maybe he'll be apologetic? Or he might be angry with me… I just don't know."
"Yeah of course… I just- I want to be able to help you. But… but I don't think I can this time." Melissa mumbled weakly, running her thumb over his cheek.
"I know… I've gotta do this one by myself." Lucas sighed again, a couple strands of his hair falling loose over his forehead. He was obviously tired. "But you'll be just outside."
"I will be," Melissa whispered, brushing it out of his face gently. "I'll be right there if you need me. And once it's all over, we can come here if you want. To get your mind off of things for a little while."
Lucas nodded a bit. "Yeah, I'm guessing I'll probably need it. No matter how well it does or doesn't go, it's gonna be really stressful…"
"I'm sure it will be… I- I can't imagine having to do this…" Melissa whispered, hesitantly wrapping her arms around him to give him a gentle hug. "Do… do you wanna head back to the house?"
"We probably should, yeah…" Lucas hugged Melissa tightly before getting to his feet. "And we can check on your dad."
"Right- yeah," Melissa nodded, getting up after him, and brushing herself off. "My legs are numb from the cold…" She muttered, keeping a hand on the trunk of the tree as she stepped forwards.
"Careful…" Lucas held his arms out to steady Melissa. "I can go with you to ask your dad about visiting my dad."
