"I- um… right… m'sorry I didn't mean to bring it up…" Melissa mumbled, fidgeting with her hands. She quietly played with the hem of his shirt, glancing up at him. "I- I didn't mean to. I…"
"I- um… right… m'sorry I didn't mean to bring it up…" Melissa mumbled, fidgeting with her hands. She quietly played with the hem of his shirt, glancing up at him. "I- I didn't mean to. I…"
Lucas closed his eyes and shook his head a bit. "It's… it's f-fine… let's just not talk about it anymore…" He whispered in reply.
Melissa nodded a little, growing quiet after that. She didn't want to talk and bring up something else to upset him. So she just stayed quiet, curling up against him.
Lucas held tighter to Melissa, hiding his face again with a shaky sigh. Stop getting upset over everything, god… you're upsetting her…
Melissa gently kissed the top of his head, rubbing his shoulders some. Besides her soft breathing, she didn't make a sound. She continued to gently trace circles into his shoulder, chewing on her lip.
"I'm sorry, Mel…" Lucas murmured. "You shouldn't have to deal with this… my problems shouldn't have to be your problems. That's… that's what the therapist is for, right?"
Melissa glanced up at him, shaking her head. “Don’t be sorry. There’s nothing to be sorry about.” She mumbled, burying her face in his shoulder. “And sure, that’s what a therapist is for. But that’s also what your girlfriend is for. I’m here for you to talk to.”
Lucas sighed softly. "But… but this is too much for me to reasonably put on your shoulders. You shouldn't have to feel responsible for my mental health."
Melissa gave him a soft look, taking his hand in hers. “But I want to help you.” She insisted, pulling his hand up to her face to rest her head against it. “I want to help you…”
"I know, Mel… I know you do… but I can't put all of this on you. It's too much." Lucas fidgeted nervously.
“It’s- it’s not too much.” Melissa insisted, looking up at him with weak eyes. “I’ll be fine- as long as you're fine. I- I don’t need you to worry about me.”
"But then you'll be neglecting yourself, Mel, and I can't let you do that." Lucas huddled a bit closer and sighed. "I can't…"
“But… but you’re more important to me. I- I can’t let you go… unattended to? I- I guess.” Melissa mumbled, playing with her hands a little more aggressively.
"Mel, I… I can't let you go unattended either. I can't just expect you to take care of me all the time and not do anything for you in return."
“B-but… but you’re already doing enough as is…” Melissa whispered, voice shaky. “I- I can handle myself until… until you’re doing better.”
"Mel, no… you need help too, and I'm not gonna let you neglect yourself for my sake. Or in general."
"But Lucas… I-I'll be fine, I promise." Melissa insisted, gently pushing herself into a sitting position. "You- you need help right now- can't… can't you just let me focus on you?"
"I can't, Mel. I can't force you to take care of me when you need help too, okay? You need to focus on yourself too."
Melissa grew quiet, dropping back onto her back. Fidgeting with her hands, she glanced up at him. "You need help more than I do, though…" She mumbled, starting to grow quiet once again.
"I don't know whether or not that's true, but that doesn't mean that you don't need or deserve help, Mel."
Melissa curled up closer to him, trying to keep from saying anything else. ’You're definitely not acting like you can take care of yourself.’ She scolded herself, trying to drown out the sound of her thoughts.
"I wanna protect you too, Mel… your problems are important too. You shouldn't ignore yourself, okay?" Lucas sighed softly.
Melissa barely nodded, keeping her eyes off of him. She quietly pulled on her fingers, hesitantly peering up at him. “I- I just… you’ve got more to deal with than me.”
"But that doesn't mean you have nothing to deal with. You deserve help too." Lucas pulled Melissa a bit closer to himself.
Melissa tucked her head under his chin, holding onto him. “I- but… but I can do it by myself. I can deal with both of our problems.”
"No, you can't, Mel. And you shouldn't have to." Lucas toyed with Melissa's hair a bit. "You shouldn't have to carry both our burdens."
“But I don’t want you to have to carry it. You… you’ve already had to deal with so much for a long time…” Melissa mumbled, hesitating before letting herself start to relax at his touch.
"We can help each other, okay? Neither of us should be entirely shouldering both burdens."
Nodding some, Melissa curled up closer to him. “Yeah…” She mumbled, still fidgeting with her hands. “M’sorry… I’m an unnecessary mess right now…”
"No, you're not, Mel. Your heart is in the right place. I know you just want to help." Lucas gently kissed the top of Melissa's head. "But not everything is your burden. You need to make time for yourself as well."
