Melissa gave a weary look, shoulders slumping some. “Well you’re not. You never have been, and I doubt you ever will be.” She mumbled, rubbing his shoulders gently.
Melissa gave a weary look, shoulders slumping some. “Well you’re not. You never have been, and I doubt you ever will be.” She mumbled, rubbing his shoulders gently.
"Mm… how do you know? Why don't you think so?" Lucas asked weakly. "Why do you love me, Mel?"
“I- why do I love you?” Melissa asked softly, glancing down at him. “Well- um you were a friend to me when you were little. You seemed really nice. And that assumption was obviously correct. I mean you’re such a nice guy… and you love me. I- I just… I guess you fe always loved you. Even though I can’t come up with specific reasoning, just know it’s true.”
Lucas sighed softly and buried his face in Melissa's shoulder again. "B-But I just… I don't… I don't feel like I deserve it… I've never really done anything to deserve someone like you…"
“Someone like me?” Melissa muttered under her breath, laying back down. “Lucas I’m nothing special. Despite what you think you don’t have to do anything to “earn” me. I’m a person, not some kind of present.”
"You feel pretty special to me… I feel like I don't deserve your love, Mel… you're amazing, and I… I'm just a stupid, broken mess…"
Melissa flushed immensely at that, stammering a little as she tried to come up with an argument. "I- that's not true. You're wonderful Lucas… and- um…" She was flushed more, playing with her hands. "I- I love you a lot. You deserve anything and everything I can give you. That and more."
"Why do I, though? I just… I feel awful… I feel like I just don't deserve anything good from you…" Lucas took Melissa's hands in his own and laced their fingers together with a soft sigh.
Melissa sucked in a deep breath, bringing his hand up to her lips. "Because there's nothing to deserve. You don't have to do anything to earn me. So you deserve it all." She insisted, gently kissing him.
"You're too kind to me, Mel…" Lucas held tighter to Melissa, quivering a bit in her grasp. "I'm sorry… I'm probably being stupid and irrational again…"
"Is there really such a thing as too kind?" Melissa whispered, gently tipping his chin to look up at her. "And you're not stupid, or irrational. Not right now at least." She mumbled, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead.
Lucas looked up at Melissa weakly, his eyes broken and distant. It felt like everything was crumbling around him even though he wasn't learning anything new. He was noticeably shaking, almost as though he were cold, and he wasn't quite sure what to do with himself. "But… but you shouldn't be nice to me…" He whispered. "I don't deserve it…"
"That's not true, you completely deserve it." Melissa insisted, her heart dropping. The look on his face made her choke as tears brimmed her eyes. "Baby, please… I love you. I love you so much, and um…" She mumbled, keeping a hold on his hand. "Well I- I don't see why I shouldn't be nice to you. I mean, I'm really in love with you. And- and you're so kind and loving to me."
Tears stung the corners of Lucas's eyes as well when he saw Melissa beginning to cry. "I-I'm sorry…" He whispered weakly. "It's… it's not your fault… it's my fault… entirely my fault…" A couple of tears rolled down his pale cheeks and he choked, sitting back a bit to rub at his eyes. "I'm s-so sorry…"
Swallowing the lump in her throat, she scooted up closer so she could hold his hands again. "Please- don't apologize…" She whispered, trying her best to keep from crying. "It's not your fault. You haven't done anything wrong." Melissa whispered, reaching up and rubbing his tears away.
"I-I've done everything wrong!" Lucas insisted, pulling one hand away from Melissa so he could run his fingers through his hair, tugging hard in hopes that the pain would ground him some. "I-I couldn't… I couldn't save Claus, a-and I just let my dad beat me and slowly kill himself with alcohol because I was too afraid to ask for help, and now he's in jail and my mom's dead a-and you're the only one I've got left anymore and I'm treating you like shit, aren't I? All I do is cause problems, and… and force you to deal with me because I'm too useless to be able to do anything myself anymore, a-and I just… I can't do this anymore, Mel! It's all my fault and I can't do it!"
Melissa was frozen in place, just staring at him with no argument. She felt horrible, but couldn't think of anything to say. In all honesty, she was partially stunned at his outburst. Not that she had a problem with him talking about what was wrong. Though being enlightened about what was exactly going through his head really shook her. Her hold on his hand was loose as she tried to come up with something to say, but the tension remained as she sat there in silence. "I- I'm sorry… I- I guess I didn't think it was this bad…" She admitted, her voice in a weak whisper as she struggled to keep eye contact.
Lucas pulled his other hand away from Melissa and sat back on the couch, drawing his knees up to his chest as he quietly sobbed. He kept his palms on his forehead as he tugged at his hair with both hands, only succeeding in distressing himself further. "D-Don't be sorry…" He whispered weakly. "This… t-this is my fault too… it's always my fault… everything is my fault…"
When Lucas pulled his hand away, her shoulders slumped. "Lucas baby…" She whispered, scooting over and gently holding onto his arms. "Please… I don't want you hurting yourself." She continued to whisper, trying to pry his hands away. Melissa gently wrapped one of her arms around his shoulders pulling him close to herself. "You're not a problem… you're not a problem maker. You're Lucas, and I love you so much."
"I can't…" Lucas whispered in reply. "I c-can't do it… I can't do this… p-please…" He reluctantly let go of his hair, which was now disheveled, and clenched his hands into fists. "I can't… I-I can't… I can't…" He sobbed weakly into his hands. "They're gone, and I… it's my fault… it's all my fault, Mel… I c— c-can't do this…"
Melissa gently pulled him closer to herself, trying her best to relax him. “Shhh… I know babe… shhh…” Gently she played with his hair to try and smooth it out some, managing to regain a bit of neatness. “I’m here for you. I can do, and will do, anything you need… just try to breath, please.”
"I can't…" Lucas choked and sobbed harder, shaking violently in Melissa's arms. He was shaking hard enough to make Melissa tremble as well, and it seemed nearly impossible for him to draw in a full breath. His breaths were quick, harsh, and shaky, and they made his throat feel cold and his head light and hazy.
"Shhh, shhh…" Melissa was gently hushing him, bringing him closer to himself. "You don't have to say anything. I- I'm here for you. Whether you need a shoulder to cry on, or someone to talk to." She whispered, kissing the top of his head. She tried to ignore the shaking as she played with his hair to try and relax him some. Other than that she didn't really know what to do.
"I can't do this, Mel… please… I just want to stop…" Lucas whispered shakily, coughing again as he shook. "I don't wanna go back… I-I don't wanna do it… I can't do it anymore…" He sobbed weakly, his face pale and clammy. "W-Why am I like this…?"
"Can't do what anymore?" Melissa asked softly, tipping his chin up to look at her. The tired look on her face was prominent as she gently stroked his cheeks with her thumbs. "What is the thing you're so worried about right now? You keep saying it's your fault, but you never said what it was."
"Everything… everything is my fault…" Lucas choked again and bit down hard on his lip. "I c-can't do the homework… I can't… I don't have enough time, a-and I just… I can't…" He rubbed at his eyes a bit. "I-I don't wanna go back to school, a-and I don't wanna go back to the hospital, I don't wanna do anything anymore…"
Melissa let out a weak sigh, resting her chin on the top of his head. "I know it's a lot babe, and I know you're struggling… but you've got to do it. And- I seriously doubt you have to turn them all in right away. Maybe… maybe you can turn in the ones you've already finished and they'll give you more time to finish the rest of them." She offered softly, tracing loose circles into his shoulder.
"I can't… I can't do any more… p-please…" Lucas gripped the fabric of his shirt tightly, trying his best to calm down. "I c-can't, Mel… I can't… please don't make me…" He hiccuped and coughed again, still shaking. "Please…"
Melissa gently took his hands once again, pulling him closer in her arms. "I won't make you… not today. You don't have to do anything else, babe…" She promised, pulling him closer still. "No more work today… you're all done. You don't even have to think about it."
Lucas buried his face in Melissa's shoulder, still hyperventilating as he struggled to bring himself down. "B-But I have to— get it done…" He sobbed weakly. "T-They don't care— that I— what I'm going through… they just— want me— t-to do it…"
