"You— you've done so much to love me… and take care of me. I- I was miserable, and… and…" Melissa grew quiet, dropping her gaze to the floor. "I- I just… you did a lot. I'm bad at coming up with examples."
"You— you've done so much to love me… and take care of me. I- I was miserable, and… and…" Melissa grew quiet, dropping her gaze to the floor. "I- I just… you did a lot. I'm bad at coming up with examples."
Lucas sighed softly again and looked away. "But I haven't really done that much, Mel… I've been in the hospital a lot of the time, I… I just…"
"What about the times when we were younger? I mean, you were my friend when we were kids. We've had a long time together, and you've stuck by me." Melissa mumbled, playing with his hair.
"Yeah, but… but we were happy when we were kids. Our troubles were trivial and it wasn't hard to calm you down if you got upset…"
"But it just goes to show that you did help me." Melissa insisted gently. "You were there for me… and you still are. You're making sure I'm taken care of. You've always been there for me Lucas…"
"Mm…" Lucas sighed again. "But… you're the one who has to constantly make sure I'm not about to kill myself. That's not fair to you."
"It's fine, Lucas. I do it because I care about you." Melissa whispered, kissing the top of his head. "Not because I feel like I have to."
"I know you care about me, but it's not fair to you that I'm constantly putting that kind of pressure on you."
“Darling, please… it’s okay. I’m perfectly fine.” Melissa continued to insist as she fiddled with her hands. “You don’t have to worry about that.”
"But doesn't that stress you out?" Lucas asked weakly. "Never knowing how I am mentally? Feeling responsible for my stupid actions? I shouldn't be your responsibility. You shouldn't have to watch over me to make sure I won't kill myself."
"I- I mean, sometimes, sure…" Melissa mumbled as she continued to play with his hair. "But… I- I'm fine with it, really." She insisted, keeping up a light smile.
Lucas sighed softly. "You can't make me believe that you're happy about this, Mel. I don't believe that you're perfectly fine with hovering over me all the time. You've got yourself to worry about as well; you shouldn't have to constantly watch me on top of that."
Melissa let out a soft sigh as she rested her chin on his shoulder. "Why not?" She mumbled, letting out a soft sigh. "And what about you? You've got yourself to take care of, but you still try to take care of me. It doesn't seem fair you're the only one who's allowed to help the other."
"Because you already do so much for me, and if I did nothing in return, I'd be an asshole." Lucas sighed softly and buried his face in Melissa's shoulder again.
"No, you wouldn't be, Lucas," Melissa mumbled weakly, glancing over to him. "Come on, don't say that. You wouldn't be; you know I would never think that."
"If I just let you do a bunch of nice things for me all the time and I never did anything in return, that would mean I was using you, and I don't want to use you."
Melissa grew quiet at that, letting out a soft sigh. She dropped her head on his shoulder, fidgeting with the sleeve of her sweatshirt. "You- you… you mean that, right?" She asked rather quietly, her voice not louder than a whisper.
"Mean what? That I don't want to just be using you? Yeah, of course. You deserve better than that." Lucas sighed softly.
Melissa nodded a little, resting her head on his shoulder. "Right…" She mumbled, lacing her fingers with his. "I- um… you wanna go sit on the couch or something?"
"I… I guess so, but I should probably get back to work soon…" Lucas glanced over at his stack of papers.
Melissa let out a soft sigh, starting to pull back away from him. “I know you need to… but you’re clearly still a little… I dunno, frazzled I guess? I think you just need to get away and not think about it. For just a few minutes.”
"Alright, alright…" Lucas sighed and reluctantly got to his feet. "Five… but not for too long or I'll never get it done."
“I know… I’ll leave you alone, after a couple minutes.” Melissa whispered, taking his hand and leading him towards the couch. Laying down, she held her arms out to him. “Cuddles?”
"Mm…" Lucas lay down beside Melissa and huddled close to her with a quiet sigh. "I'm sorry…"
Melissa nuzzled up against him, wrapping her arms around his waist. “Don’t be sorry, darling.” She whispered, pressing a kiss to his shoulder.
Lucas held Melissa close to himself and closed his eyes, trying his best to relax. "But… but I feel bad…"
“Why..? You didn’t do anything wrong. And I’m not upset.” Melissa mumbled, curling up even smaller in his arms.
"Because I'm… I'm causing problems…" Lucas replied weakly. "You should be upset… I'm the worst…"
Melissa let out a soft sigh, sitting up to look down at him. “That’s not true… I’m not upset, and I have no reason to be. You’re not the worst.” She insisted, playing with his hair.
"Mm…" Lucas hid his face again, just allowing Melissa to play with his hair. "But I just… I feel like I am…"
