"Well, Fluff here is our equivalent of dogs," Matthew said. "And didn't Rowan bring his dog along..?" Matthew looked around, a bit confused.
"Well, Fluff here is our equivalent of dogs," Matthew said. "And didn't Rowan bring his dog along..?" Matthew looked around, a bit confused.
"Yeah, he did. She's been really quiet. And exploring." Rowan's mother whistled and Maisie came running out of the forest she'd been sniffing around in.
(Us, who kinda forgot she existed for a while:)
"Ah, okay then." Matthew smiled as the dog came running up, holding Rowan in his arms still.
"She's really curious about this whole place, which I suppose makes sense. It's very different than the city she used to live in."
"Well, I must admit, your world has a much different definition of city than mine does. That place we were, that was the most populated city in the known world. But the city you and Rowan were in…"
"It's pretty big, yeah. There are even more densely populated places than that, believe it or not." She laughed softly to herself.
Matthew shook his head some, letting out a breath. He let his wings relax some, too, just barely not dragging on the ground.
"So many people… And no one with wings? Really?"
"Nope. Nobody on earth has wings." Rowan's mother shook her head a bit. "No magic, either."
Matthew shook his head again.
"That, that's something I could never imagine."
"We get along just fine with technology." She smiled gently. "Mechanical and electrical stuff."
"Alright, then." Matthew smiled, still a bit skeptical. Still, he didn't voice this- he figured they got alone fine when they didn't compare Matthew's world to it.
"We're even able to fly with technology, technically. We just need big machines to do it."
"Really?" Matthew tilted his head some, looking back at his own wings. "Because, I think wings would be the best way to fly."
"But wouldn't you get tired with wings?" She asked. "We've got big things called planes that tons of people can be in all at once, and they can fly."
"Not if you find enough winds to ride on," Matthew said. "And I much prefer being the one controlling the flight than the thought of being cooped up with a bunch of other people and not have any control at all."
She shrugged a bit. "But then you don't have to worry about getting tired."
"When we get tired, we rest," Matthew pointed out. "Besides, we can go for miles. It's good with me, besides. We rarely need to go as far as we are able to."
"I suppose so." She shrugged a bit. "The point is that we're able to manage without wings anyway."
"True, true. I shouldn't judge for something you can't control." Matthew chuckled softly.
She laughed softly as well. "Yeah… very few living things in our world have wings. Pretty much just birds."
"It's such a hard thing to imagine," Matthew admitted.
She nodded a bit. "I'm sure it is for you. And it's odd for us to see everything having wings." She smiled reassuringly up at Matthew.
"Coming from different worlds is really weird, isn't it," Matthew agreed. "So many differences…"
"Indeed. We're lucky that we at least speak the same language, yes?" She hummed softly as she walked.
"Yeah… it'd have been really tough to tell Rowan was an intelligent being if he wasn't able to speak the common language. That's usually the key to deciding here…" Matthew chuckled some.
Rowan's mother laughed softly. "I guess you guys don't have different languages here, then? We've got thousands back on earth."
"We do," Matthew admitted, "But everyone is taught Common, and not many even bother with the old languages anymore."
"I suppose that makes sense. English is the most common in our world, but there's still far too many languages to remember."
"I see…" Matthew let out a breath. "So, are there other intelligent races on your world, besides humans?"
"Not really, no. There are things that are close, but nothing quite on the same level as humans." She shrugged a bit. "Monkeys and apes and such are the closest, but some animals like elephants and dolphins are quite smart as well."
