Melissa gave him a weak look, shoulders slumping. "I know babe, but you're really hurting yourself. You need to stop pushing yourself to your limits."
Melissa gave him a weak look, shoulders slumping. "I know babe, but you're really hurting yourself. You need to stop pushing yourself to your limits."
"But what else am I supposed to do? I don't really have any other choice, Melissa. I have to get all of this done."
“I know that Lucas, but you’re literally shaking.” Melissa retorted, having sat back in her seat. “You said it yourself, you’re not feeling like you’re learning anything, and if you continue to just try to get it out of the way, you’re not going to remember anything.”
"Well, it's not like we're going to talk about any of this ever again in school, so what does it matter anyway…?" Lucas sighed softly and ran his fingers through his hair again.
“But you might actually need it for tests. And then you’ll be frustrated when you have to learn it all when you study.” Melissa sighed weakly, folding her arms on the table, and resting her chin on them.
"Well, I don't have the luxury of being able to study these things right now. I don't have the time or the energy or the ability. I just… need to get this done…"
Melissa kept quiet at that, not bothering to argue any further. She was quietly fiddling with her hair, fidgeting in place to keep from arguing.
Lucas kept writing down answers, gradually clenching his fist tighter and tighter around his pencil so that his hand wouldn't shake so much from the stress. Eventually, he ended up snapping the pencil and startled himself out of his daze.
Melissa had been watching him carefully, letting out a soft sigh when his pencil broke. She didn’t say anything as she reached to get a replacement pencil for him. Quietly she offered it to him, sighing as she curled up back on her seat.
Lucas hesitated before tentatively accepting the pencil from Melissa, the other's remains laying discarded on the table. "Are you okay, Mel?" He asked weakly.
"I'm concerned about you." Melissa mumbled, taking the broken parts of the pencil to fiddle with. She glanced over to him, with a tired look, forcing up a weak smile. "Otherwise I'm fine…"
Lucas sighed softly and rested his head in his hands. "I'm… I'm sure I'll be fine when this is all over…"
Melissa looked up at him, sighing softly. "But you're not okay right now…" She mumbled her forced smile falling.
"No, maybe I'm not, but I don't have the time to worry about it…" Lucas sighed again, gripping his hair tightly.
Melissa sat up, reaching over and taking his hands in her own. “Lucas, please…” She barely let out her voice, trying to stop himself from possibly harming himself.
Lucas sighed shakily, clenching his hands into tight fists as Melissa gripped his wrists. "I'm fine… I'm fine, Melissa…"
"You're not fine, Lucas. You're as far from fine as can be." Melissa insisted, trying to get him to relax his fingers. "You're stressed, and you're tired, and you're frustrated. You're hurting yourself, and I'm worried about you."
"But I don't have the time to not be fine. I don't have the luxury right now…" Lucas closed his eyes and weakly tried to pull his arms from Melissa's grasp.
"Lucas…" Melissa whispered weakly, keeping a tight hold on his wrists. "Honey you need to listen to me. You need to stop, you're really hurting yourself."
"I'm fine." Lucas insisted, growing more frustrated with himself by the second. He figured if he kept telling himself he was fine, he would feel fine, but it wasn't working.
“You’re not fine Lucas. No matter how much you want to think it, you’re not fine.” Melissa insisted with a weak look. She loosened her hold on his wrist, reaching up to run her fingers through his hair.
"Mm…" Lucas whimpered softly and closed his eyes. "I can't do this, Mel… but I have to… please…"
Melissa laced her fingers with his, keeping a tight hold on his hands. She kept her eyes glued to his face as she gently rubbed the back of his hand. “You can’t keep doing this, darling… I know you have to get it done, but you can’t keep putting yourself under this much pressure. You need to take a break. I mean it, right now.”
"I can't, Mel…" Lucas kept his eyes closed, holding his breath for a moment. "I've taken too many breaks the past few days, I… I-I can't spare the time anymore…"
“So you’re going to push yourself until you can’t keep going anymore?” Melissa retorted in a stern tone. She had a look of concern painted across her face as she held onto him.
"I have to, Melissa. I'll never get this done if I don't…" Lucas sighed shakily and looked down at the pile of work he still had to do.
"But if you can't keep going, and you're not finish, what are you going to do then?" Melissa whispered, reaching up and turning his face to look at her instead. "Lucas you can't do this to yourself. The more we argue is more time wasted. Please, if not for you, for me. Five minutes."
Lucas looked up at Melissa weakly. He was breaking, but he was obviously trying to hide it. "I… I can't do that, Mel… please… I don't have the time…"
Melissa's heart dropped when he looked at her, her hold on his hands loosening. "It's…. it's not good for you to do this to yourself, though…" She whispered, holding his face in her hands.
"I-I know it's not, but I've done worse, and… I really don't have better options right now. I don't have enough time to get it all done."
