(Sorry, was in trouble with my parents asdfggjj)
"Yeah…" Lucas sighed again. "I think she might be upset with me for telling her that she can't just skip work." He got to his feet and stretched a bit.
(It's all good!)
"Well, she's the one who got the job." Mr. Brennahan pointed out, pulling his coat back on. "It's not like you're the boss of her."
"True…" He put on his own coat and headed out with Mr. Brennahan. "I just don't want her to be upset with me, you know?"
“Yeah, I get it. I doubt she’s actually upset with you, though.” Mr. Brennahan hummed, pulling the door shut when they were both out.
"Yeah, I guess…" Lucas got into the car with Mr. Brennahan and glanced around warily. "Hopefully it'll go well at the school…"
“I’m sure it will.” He hummed with a slight smile. Melissa didn’t look up at them from the back seat, looking out the window. “You two buckled in?” Mr. Brennahan asked, as he started the car. Melissa nodded just a little, keeping quiet.
"Yes, sir." Lucas pet Cody softly as he looked over at Melissa, clearly nervous. Thankfully, having Cody with him kept him mostly calm despite the situation.
Eventually Mr. Brennahan pulled up to the restaurant to let Melissa out. “We’ll pick you up at the end of your shift.” He told her softly, watching as she got out. “Yeah… see you then.” She mumbled, grabbing her bag before shutting her door. When she was walked inside, Mr. Brennahan started off to the school.
Lucas pulled Cody a bit closer after Melissa left, seeming uneasy. "She sounds annoyed…" He murmured softly. "Hopefully she'll have calmed down by the end of her shift, yeah?"
Glancing over to him, Mr. Brennahan nodded a bit. “I’m sure she’ll be fine. She’s had a rough day— like you said earlier. She probably just needs some space from the house.” He shrugged, looking over to him as they stopped at a red light.
"Yeah… I'm sure you're right, sir." Lucas looked out the window and hummed softly to himself, gently rubbing the top of Cody's head. "Maybe working will keep her mind off of everything."
“I’m sure it will. For a little bit at least.” Mr. Brennahan agreed, humming softly as he turned into the school parking lot. “You ready to head in?”
Lucas nodded a bit and got out of the car with Cody. "Mhmm. Hopefully this won't be too much of a hassle…" He laughed weakly. "I hope they believe us about Mel."
“I don’t see any reason they shouldn’t. And if for whatever reason they can’t do anything about it without visual proof, I’m sure they’ll at least attempt to keep an eye on this girl… I hope at least.” Mr. Brennahan muttered the last bit as they made their way to the doors.
"Yeah… I think it might be a group of people bothering her, actually. I had to step in once, and then I went outside with her since she was upset…" Lucas sighed heavily.
“Really?” He stated softly, letting out a weak sigh. “Well- thank you for watching out for her.” Mr. Brennahan told Lucas softly, holding the door for him.
Lucas nodded a bit and headed inside with Mr. Brennahan. "Of course, sir… don't mention it." He smiled gently as he followed him along. "I'd do anything for her."
Mr. Brennahan looked over to him, surprise written on his face. "Anything, now?" He stated, a little smile playing at his lips. "That's a mighty big promise."
Lucas laughed softly. "Well, yeah, but it's true. You know me, sir." He gently patted Cody's head as he walked. "I just want the best for Melissa."
Chuckling softly, Mr. Brennahan gently squeezed Lucas's shoulder. "I know you do, but I don't want you to get hurt while trying to help her. Make sure you're taking care of yourself too."
"I know, I know… I'm willing to take that risk, though." He smiled weakly. "Melissa is worth that risk."
"But I don't want you to do that. I know you care about her a lot, Lucas. I do too— but I don't want you to do that." Mr. Brennahan insisted, walking through the empty halls.
"I know, sir…" Lucas toyed with his hair a bit. "But she's already been through a lot, you know? And so have I, but… I don't want her to get hurt anymore. I can… I can handle it, and I don't want her to get to the point I was at…"
Stopping, the man looked over to Lucas with a concerned expression. Gently he took hold of both his shoulders, looking down at the younger male. "Lucas… I know you want to help her, but are you really going to sacrifice your mental, and possibly physical health? I really don't want you to do that… I know she wouldn't be fond of the idea, either."
Lucas looked up at Mr. Brennahan, still smiling weakly. "If that's what I need to do to protect her, then I'm willing to do that. She deserves the best in this world and I wanna give that to her if there's anything I can do about it."
"Lucas…" Mr. Brennahan stated again, even softer this time. "Please, you're going to get hurt really bad if you stick with that mindset. I know you care, and I know you want to be there for her, but please… be smart about it."
"Sorry, sir… I just… honestly, I don't put a lot of value into my own safety anymore. Melissa's is more important to me." Lucas toyed with his hands a bit.
"Which I'm not too happy about… but I understand. I know you want to protect her, but sometimes you've got to take care of yourself. If something bad were to happen to you, you know Melissa would blame herself. I'm not trying to guilt you, I promise I'm not, but I need you to realize that. If you push yourself to the limits, you know you're going to get hurt." He told him softly. "I just want you to be careful, alright?"
"Yes, sir…" Lucas looked away and sighed. "I'm still struggling with the whole… caring about myself, thing. It honestly scares me sometimes how little value I put into my own life…" Cody pressed closer to Lucas to relax him.
