Lucas kept quiet as well, seeming to be content in the silence. He occasionally shifted or nuzzled against Melissa, but was otherwise still.
Lucas kept quiet as well, seeming to be content in the silence. He occasionally shifted or nuzzled against Melissa, but was otherwise still.
Melissa didn't really react after the first couple times he moved, growing numb to reality. She had an almost dead look on her face as she stared out, only just barely fidgeting with her fingers. Eventually a car could be heard pulling up to the house, and a car door shutting echoed up to the roof of the house.
Lucas glanced up a bit at the sound, sighing softly. "We should probably head back down now, Mel…" He murmured gently.
Melissa had really lost herself in thought, his voice lost to her. But slowly she started coming back to reality, looking over to him with a lost look. "What..?"
"We gotta head back downstairs. Your dad is back." Lucas repeated, stretching a bit.
Melissa sighed weakly, burying her face in his chest. "But I don't want to…" She mumbled, curling up closer.
"I know… but we should probably go talk to him." Lucas got out of the hammock and held one hand out to Melissa.
"Why? We already talked to him…" Melissa mumbled, sitting up and reaching out to hold onto his hand.
"Well, he might have more to say… I think he'll be calling the school, after all. He might want more information."
Melissa kept a loose hold on his hand, letting out a weak sigh. “But I don’t wanna talk about it…” She mumbled as she got to her feet.
"I know, but it might be important for getting them to stop." Lucas helped Melissa up and then climbed back down the ladder.
Melissa sighed weakly, following him down in her room. “But I don’t have anything else…”
Lucas shrugged a bit and left the room with Melissa. "Well, I dunno… he might have questions."
Melissa huffed again, leading in front of him. Coming down the stairs, she looked up and froze in place. Her partners were both standing there in the living room, talking quietly to each other.
Lucas looked up at them, keeping Melissa close to himself. "It's okay, Mel… they're not mad at you."
"B-But…" Melissa stopped herself from arguing, sucking in a deep breath. Mr. Brennahan looked up at the two, giving a faint smile. "Hey, honey, can we talk to you for a minute?" He asked softly. Melissa froze up in Lucas's arms, looking up at him.
"It's okay, Mel…" Lucas gently led Melissa over to the couch so she could talk to her parents.
Melissa was stiff, trying to stop her hands from shaking so bad. She kept her eyes glued to the floor in attempt to avoid eye contact with her mother. "How long has this been going on, Melissa?" Mr. Brennahan asked softly, sitting besides the two of them on the couch. Melissa really only glanced over to Lucas, trying to relax herself. "About… about a year- probably longer…"
Lucas gently rubbed the back of Melissa's hand with his thumb, trying to comfort her. "I didn't know that all this was going on, sir…" He murmured softly. "Or I would have tried to do something about it sooner."
Mr. Brennahan nodded, resting a hand on Melissa’s knee. Gently he rubbed her as well, glancing over to his wife. “It’s not your fault Lucas- or yours Melissa. Neither of you asked for this to happen.” He stated softly, gently pulling Melissa in for a side hug. “Can you tell me the names of the kids who are doing this?” Mr. Brennahan asked in a gentle tone. Melissa nodded, still tightly holding onto Lucas’s hand. After naming off a couple names, she looked over to Lucas with a weak look.
Lucas smiled weakly back at Melissa, still holding onto her hand and trying to reassure her. "It's gonna be okay, Mel. You're gonna be fine, alright?"
Melissa sighed, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “Right… thank you for doing this, dad.” She mumbled, sitting back to lean into Lucas’s arms. “Of course, honey. I want you to be safe… Lucas, do you think I could talk to you about something, upstairs in my office?”
"U-Um…" Lucas seemed a bit taken aback, but nodded anyway and got to his feet. "Y-Yeah, of course, sir… what do you need?" He asked, beginning to follow Mr. Brennahan up the stairs.
“I just wanted to talk to you about the Cody situation. You said you’d want to take him with you, right?” Mr. Brennahan asked, starting to look through papers in his desk.
"To school? Um… y-yeah, probably." Lucas fidgeted a bit, still a bit on edge. "Do you think it'll go okay?"
“I’m guessing so. You might need to come with me to the school, later tonight though. In case there’s something they need you to fill out. Otherwise we should be fine.” Mr. Brennahan insisted, grabbing a pen off his desk as he started to write something down. “Gladly I have the rest of the day off, so going tonight will be easy.”
"Right… are we gonna tell the school about Melissa's thing too while we're there? Sometimes bullying goes unnoticed… I would know…" Lucas sighed softly. "People used to pick on me a lot."
Mr. Brennahan looked up at Lucas, nodding some. “That’s why I’m going there in the first place. While I was out I went ahead and called the school. We set up a meeting for tonight. Even if they don’t need you, I’d rather you come along anyways, just so you’re not at the house by yourself.”
Lucas nodded a bit. "Is Melissa coming with us too, then?" He asked. "I wouldn't want to leave her here alone either… she's having a rough day."
“She told me she had work tonight, so no I don’t think so. I had a feeling we’d drop her off.” Mr. Brennahan hummed a little, setting the pen down and looking up at Lucas. “What about you? I know it’s not been the best day, but how are you doing?”
