"Don't be, Mel… I love you, okay?" Lucas smiled softly down at Melissa.
"Don't be, Mel… I love you, okay?" Lucas smiled softly down at Melissa.
“I love you, too…” Melissa whispered, curling up in his arms. “Thank you for taking care of me…”
"No problem… we can bring these notes to the principal as soon as school starts back up."
Melissa nodded weakly, nuzzling up against him. “Should- should I show my dad..?”
Lucas nodded a bit, gently kissing Melissa's cheek. "Yeah, I think you should… he can contact the school, and they might take him more seriously."
Melissa looked up at him, sighing weakly. “Will you come with me..?”
"Sure, Mel. You wanna go now?" Lucas asked softly.
Melissa shook her head, burying her face back in his chest. "Not right now… he's probably busy." She mumbled, holding on tightly.
"Alright… when do wanna tell him, then?" Lucas asked. "When he comes down to eat or something?"
"I dunno… not now, though." Melissa mumbled, curling up closer. "I don't really want to…"
Lucas sighed softly. "Alright… we'll just wait for him to come down, then."
Melissa nuzzled up against him, sighing softly. "I… I don't want to… he's gonna be upset."
"I don't think he'll be upset with you, Mel… I think he'll be upset with them and with the school for allowing this to go on."
"But- but… but it's my fault." Melissa whispered, holding on tightly. "I- I didn't tell anyone… and- and…"
"It's not your fault that you're getting bullied though, okay? It's not. Sure, you should've told someone, but that doesn't make it your fault."
Melissa stayed huddled up in his arms, gripping onto the fabric of his shirt. "B-But… what if it is..?" She mumbled.
"It's not, Mel, and I'm sure your father will agree. I don't think he'll be angry with you."
"But… but maybe he will be…" Melissa whispered, lip quivering as she tried to relax. "And- and… and I'll get in trouble f-for not telling him."
"Melissa, please… your father is reasonable. Nothing like my own. I really don't think he'll be angry with you."
Melissa was whimpering, looking up at him with shaky hands. "B-But…" She was weakly rambling, still holding onto him.
"You have a good dad, Mel. Okay?" Lucas sighed weakly. "Your dad wouldn't hit you, or be angry with you over things that aren't your fault, or steal what little money you have to buy beer. Your dad is a good person and he's not going to be mad at you for getting bullied, because that's not your fault."
"I- I know, but… but…" Melissa continued to ramble, practically collapsing in his arms. "H-He's nothing like yours…. and- and I know th-that… but- but…"
"But what, Mel? What?" Lucas asked weakly, still holding Melissa close. "Your dad loves you and he won't be angry with you. Even if he was upset, he'd forgive you, because he actually cares about you."
Melissa shook her head, starting to cry. Whatever she was trying to say was muffled by the fabric of his shirt. She rambled incoherent sentences, trying to stop herself from crying so hard.
Lucas sighed again and rested his head against Melissa's. "Mel, please calm down… you know everyone here loves you. We're not gonna be mad at you for this, okay?"
"I- I- m'trying…" Melissa choked, still shaking pretty hard. Her body felt numb, knees going weak as she leaned on him for support. "I- I- I'm sorry… so sorry…"
Lucas led Melissa over to the couch and curled up with her. He was honestly too tired to deal with this right now, and it seemed like all of his assurances fell on deaf ears. "Don't be sorry, okay?"
Melissa curled up in his arms, crying harder. She stayed like this for a while, eventually growing too tired to cry anymore. Her trembling body was starting to relax in his arms. She was still sniffling, but wasn't anyone near as bad as she was a couple minutes ago.
"Feeling any better, Mel?" Lucas asked when she was done crying. "Your father should be coming down soon, so we can talk to him then…"
"Y-Yeah… a lot, actually…" Melissa mumbled, sighing weakly. "M'sorry about it… I- I should be okay now, though. When he comes down, I- I should be okay."
