Melissa nuzzled against him still. “Mmm, well, I want you to know I’m grateful. Very grateful, actually.”
Melissa nuzzled against him still. “Mmm, well, I want you to know I’m grateful. Very grateful, actually.”
"Mmm… that's good to hear… I'm glad I can make you happy." Lucas smiled gently at Melissa.
“You make me very happy, Lu.” Melissa agreed, kissing him. “I love you a lot.”
"I love you too, Mel… you make me happy too…" Lucas happily returned the kiss.
Melissa sighed softly, leaning into his arms. She kept quiet for the time being, nuzzling up against him
Lucas started playing with Melissa's hair and trying his best to braid it, although he was failing miserably. He clearly didn't know what to do and was mostly just twirling Melissa's hair together.
Melissa curled up closer, relaxing into his arms. She was comforted by him playing with her hair, content to just lay there with him. She didn’t care what he did with it, trusting her wouldn’t tie it into literal knots.
Lucas gave up on the braids after a while, deciding to just play with Melissa's hair normally while he hummed to himself.
Melissa smiles softly, nuzzling up closer to him. “That feels nice…” She whispered, burying her face in his shoulder.
Lucas smiled softly as well and kissed the top of Melissa's head before continuing, twirling locks of Melissa's hair between his fingers.
Melissa kept her face buried, nosing against him just a little. She sighed softly, yawning a little as she laid there with him. “Love you…”
"Love you too, Mel…" Lucas murmured in reply, yawning a bit as he relaxed against the other.
Melissa smiles softly, sighing softly. She rubbed at her eyes, leaning into him as she felt herself starting to drift off next to him.
Lucas soon drifted off into a light sleep with Melissa in his arms, comfortable in the warmth of the room.
Melissa was contently asleep in Lucas’s arms, before being waken with a start to the sound of an alarm. Groaning, she looked up, trying to figure out where she was. Though as she sat there, she heard feet coming down the stairs. The alarm continued as Mr. Brennahan came in the room with a panicked look. He disappeared into the kitchen, talking to himself as he went and pushed a window open before pulling the oven open, smoke billowing out. Melissa was slowly realizing what had happened, shaking Lucas to get him up.
"Mm…" Lucas stirred weakly and winced at the sound of the alarm, sitting up as he tried to understand what was going on. It took him several seconds, but then he went pale and jumped to his feet to run over and help, stammering rapid apologies as he tried to figure out what to do.
Melissa has gotten up, following after him when he headed for the kitchen. “Hey, it’s okay, Lucas.” Mr. Brennahan told him softly, letting the tray sit there as he turned the fan up to get the smoke out. He was running around the kitchen, eventually stopping and running his arm under the cold water as he looked over to Lucas. In the rush to get the tray out of the oven, he had bumped his arm against the hot oven, but didn’t seem to show he was in much pain. “It’s okay, don’t worry about it. It’s alright, really.”
Lucas was slumped weakly against the wall, still very pale as he stared at the smoking oven. His heart was racing and his throat had gone so tight with panic that he couldn't breathe. He was just weakly choking for air, but he was obviously growing weaker. This was all his fault. He shouldn't have fallen asleep. Dumbass, dumbass, dumbass… He coughed a couple of times, the smoke not helping his situation. Although he was not capable of speaking at the moment, he was still trying to apologize over and over again.
Melissa came up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist. She buried her face in his shoulder, trying to relax him. "It's okay, Lu… you're okay." She whispered, holding onto one of his hands. Mr. Brennahan kept his arm under the cold water, coughing some at the smoke. He glanced over to the two, giving Lucas a soft look. "It's really okay, it was an accident. I know you didn't do it on purpose." He told Lucas softly, shutting the water off. "Please, don't blame yourself. We both know you didn't mean to."
Lucas gripped Melissa's hand tightly with one hand and used the other to card through his hair anxiously, clearly still panicking. "It's all my fault… I-I'm— s-so sorry…" He choked again and kept coughing. "I-I could've burned your house down because I'm such an idiot…"
"Lucas, you wouldn't have burned the house down. It's okay." Mr. Brennahan insisted, opening the freezer to pull out an ice pack. He held it against his arm, coming up to Lucas. "It's alright, really. Please don't blame yourself." He insisted, running a hand through his own hair.
Lucas whimpered weakly, rubbing at his throat as he struggled to breathe. "B-But you got hurt because of me, and… and I shouldn't have been so stupid… this is all my fault…"
"I got hurt because I was in a rush. Please, Lucas." Mr. Brennahan insisted, coming up and resting his hand on Lucas's shoulder. "It's okay. I should have been more careful myself."
Lucas sighed shakily and closed his eyes, still holding tightly to Melissa's hand. "I-I just… I'm sorry, sir… you shouldn't have had to deal with this today…"
"It's okay, I understand what happened. It's not the end of the world, it's just one thing." He told Lucas softly, ruffling his hair just a little. "Come on, don't worry about it. I know, I've made mistakes like that before. Please, don't blame yourself."
"Mmmm… how could I not blame myself when it's my fault?" He asked tiredly, glancing back up at Mr. Brennahan.
"Because it's over with. It's okay. All of us know it was an accident, and you didn't mean to." Mr. Brennahan insisted, giving Lucas a gentle smile.
Lucas sighed softly. "Why couldn't we just go out for lunch…? God, I'm so stupid… I should've known this would happen…" He mumbled, clearly still annoyed with himself.
"Lucas, it's okay… I wanted to come home…" Melissa insisted, rubbing his shoulder. She kept her face buried in his shoulder, holding onto him tightly. "It's really okay, Lucas… you didn't know this would happen." Mr. Brennahan whispered.
Lucas leaned his head against Melissa's and closed his eyes again with a shaky sigh. "Is… is anything damaged?" He asked weakly.
