“Wow, that’s pretty cool,” Nick said. “So you got him when he was a kitten?”
“Wow, that’s pretty cool,” Nick said. “So you got him when he was a kitten?”
Cas nodded a bit. "I found him on the streets. Cats have always been drawn to me."
Nick grinned. “So you’re like, king of the cats?” he teased.
Cas flushed a bit and looked away. "U-Um… I guess you could say that? I used to carry kittens around in my pockets sometimes if they were abandoned by their mothers."
“Aw, that’s sweet,” Nick replied with a small smile as he imagined little Cas doing just that.
"Y-Yeah… just wanted to keep them safe, you know? I always tried my best to keep them well fed and stuff. I wasn't about to just let them die."
“Still, that’s sweet,” Nick repeated, still smiling.
"I guess so." Cas smiled weakly and adjusted his grip on Nix. "We should probably head to class."
Nick nodded. “Yeah, I have enough tardies to last a lifetime.”
Cas quietly followed Nick to their first class, getting Nix settled in his lap when he sat down.
Nick kept glancing at Nix, and by extension Cas, throughout the class period. Hopefully the teacher wouldn’t notice his “notes” were just doodles of Nix (and a few of Cas, but he would never show the boy himself those).
Considering that Cas still couldn't read or write, he paid no attention to the lesson, just petting Nix the whole time. The cat was very quiet and compliant, so much so that most students that weren't right next to Cas didn't even know he was there.
Halfway through class, Nick passed him a piece of paper full of doodles of Nix. He hoped that Cas would like it.
Cas smiled when he saw the paper, looking over our curiously. He couldn't draw at all, so it was impressive to him. He showed the paper to Nix, who didn't seem to care much.
Nick smiled at Cas before pretending to pay attention to class.
After class was over, Cas picked up Nix and met Nick by the door. "Thanks for the drawings! You're really good!" He smiled brightly. He generally seemed to be more relaxed when he had Nix with him.
Nick smiled, pleased. "Thanks, they're fun to do."
"I've never been able to draw anything." Cas kept his smile up. It seemed genuine and it really changed his appearance for the better. "Can you help me find my next class?" He asked.
Nick nodded. “Of course! What is it again?”
"Uhm… I think it's… English…?" Cas shrugged. "What does it say on my schedule?" He asked, holding the paper out to Nick.
“Yeah, it’s English,” Nick confirmed. “It’s just down this hall.”
"Okay!" Cas smiled softly and followed Nick to his next class. "Thanks!" He waved as he headed in with Nix.
Nick grinned, waving back. After a moment, he sighed and headed off his own next class. Hopefully Ian would be absent, since they shared a second hour.
(Time skip?)
(yeah, to lunch? lol)
(Probably yeah)
Cas was already at lunch by the time Nick arrived, quietly eating a sandwich that he had brought from home.
Nick sat next to him, digging into his school chicken drumsticks. The school’s chicken was surprisingly good compared to everything else they served.
"How are your classes going?" Cas asked Nick softly as they ate. "I haven't been paying much attention as usual… I don't understand any of it anyway. It's pretty frustrating sometimes."
“They’re going all right,” he said. “Math is hard, but it’s never been my strong suit.”
Cas nodded a bit and took another bite of his sandwich. "Well, I'm sure you're a lot better at it than I am." He laughed.
