“But is anyone gonna love me like you do? Do you seriously think I could find someone who would love and care for me more then you would?” Melissa asked softly, nosing against him still.
“But is anyone gonna love me like you do? Do you seriously think I could find someone who would love and care for me more then you would?” Melissa asked softly, nosing against him still.
Lucas sighed softly. "Well, I guess not… I really do love you, I just… I feel like I'm not good enough for you sometimes, Mel. Like I don't deserve someone as wonderful as you are."
"And guess what," Melissa started, running her fingers through his hair again. "I think the exact same thing, but you're the wonderful one. I don't deserve you, because I'm not special enough. But you're going to argue and say that's not true, right?"
"Well, yeah, of course… I can't do anything special. I'm just… sad. And nervous all the time. And way too sensitive, especially for a guy…"
"Lucas, I feel the exact same way. I can't do anything special either. There's nothing unique or special about me." Melissa insisted, kissing his cheek. "I think you're special. I think you're something I have to work up to- you're important to me, darling."
Lucas sighed softly and shook his head a bit. "I'm definitely not something to work up to, love… everyone at school thinks I'm perfect, but I'm just… I'm fucked up, Mel. So badly."
"Lucas, we've been living together for the last- what? Three months?" Melissa asked, looking up at him. "I know what's going on, and I know you're not perfect. I never expect you to be, because I know I, sure as hell, am not myself."
"I know that you know I'm not perfect, but I just… our classmates think I've got it all. I'm the captain of the baseball team, I've got a great girlfriend, a dog, no parents to tie me down, no competition… I dunno…"
Melissa gave him a weak look, holding his face to kiss his forehead. "Do their opinions really matter? Tell me the truth, do you really care what they think?"
"Well, kind of… I feel like I'm lying to them, in a way…" Lucas sighed softly to himself. "They don't know the truth… they think I'm great and they're all wrong…"
"But you don't want to tell them, do you?" Melissa asked softly, seeming to already know the answer. "You don't want to have to go tell them what's really going on. Mostly because it's not their business?"
"Y-Yeah, I guess not… I mean, I feel like I'd almost have a worse time, you know? Even if people were nice about it, they'd constantly be badgering me with questions."
Melissa nodded a bit, curling back up on his lap. "Well, if you decide you want to tell them what's really going on, I'll be there with you. Whatever you're up for doing." She hummed a little, resting her chin on his shoulder.
Lucas nodded a bit and sighed, huddling a little closer to Melissa. "I just… I hate lying. And you know that people are going to ask questions. I'll have been gone for ages…"
Melissa pulled back just enough to give him a soft, reassuring look. "I can deal with all of that, if you want. I can deal with it before you even get back." She offered in a soft tone.
Lucas rubbed at his teary eyes and looked away. "I don't know what I want, Mel… I don't know how to deal with this."
"Then don't deal with this now. We can talk about it some other time. Right now, we can just sit here and talk about non-important things." Melissa offered, not pushing for him to look at her.
"O-Okay…" Lucas sighed again and buried his face in Melissa's shoulder. "What do you wanna talk about, Mel?"
Melissa shrugged a little, resting her head against his with a soft sigh. "Dunno… but something that'll make you feel better. Any suggestions?"
Lucas shrugged as well. "I dunno… is everybody doing okay? Nothing bad has happened while I've been stuck here?"
Melissa shook her head when the question was posed. "Besides mom and dad still fighting, and the whole Gabriel thing, everything's been fine."
Lucas nodded a bit, falling silent for a couple of seconds. "That's good… anything particularly good happen?"
"Umm… I got my license?" Melissa offered, slinking down a little lower. "I don't really know if that counts…"
"That's exciting… restricted or unrestricted?" Lucas asked curiously. "It'll be ages until I can get my license…"
"Unrestricted." Melissa hummed softly in response. "I'm guessing you never even went to get your learner's permit, huh?"
"I did, actually, and I passed… I've just never driven before." Lucas sighed softly. "But I do technically have a permit."
"Oh, okay… because of parental stuff, right?" Melissa asked, starting to play with his hair again. "Your dad would never let you drive?"
"Well, I wasn't about to ask him to go with me, and it's not legal for me to drive alone if I've just got a permit. And it's not safe to drive anywhere near my house. I'd have to go on a real road or something to get to a parking lot."
"That's true… I mean, it's not helpful now, but I'm sure my dad would go with you if you wanted to practice. No promising he'll have the time, though."
Lucas flushed a bit and nodded. "M-Maybe once I'm out of here… I'm worried about getting on an actual road."
