“I promise you’ll see me again. I’ll come back as soon as they let me come back. You don’t need to worry I won’t.” Melissa told him softly, burying her face into his hair.
“I promise you’ll see me again. I’ll come back as soon as they let me come back. You don’t need to worry I won’t.” Melissa told him softly, burying her face into his hair.
Lucas weakly nodded again. "I-I know, I know… I'm just being irrational and paranoid. It's just… it's been so long since we've seen each other…"
Melissa sighed weakly, holding him closer. "I'm really, really sorry about that. I'll do better so you don't have to feel paranoid."
"O-Okay…" Lucas whispered shakily, clinging tighter to Melissa. "I… um… I started thinking that you were getting sick of me for a bit, to be honest… my therapist said that you probably hadn't, though."
"Of course not, Lucas." Melissa told him weakly, feeling awful that he had even thought that. Though she didn't dare tell him that, not wanting him to feel bad. "Quite the opposite, darling. I've been dying to come see you. I just lost track of time."
"Mm…" Lucas held a little tighter to Melissa. "I-I wouldn't blame you, honestly… I mean, this is a lot for anyone to have to deal with… and I'm supposed to take care of your and protect you and I can't… I'm a terrible boyfriend…"
"Hey, don't talk like that about yourself." Melissa whispered, pulling closer when he did. She held his head close, gently running her fingers through his hair. "You're not a terrible boyfriend. You've done a lot to take care of me, Lu. Even while here. You're the one who talk to my dad, aren't you? You're the one trying to make sure I'm in good hands. How can you call that being a terrible boyfriend?"
Lucas's eyes stung with tears as he looked up at Melissa, his face a bit flushed. "B-But I just… I'm n so pathetic… look what I've done to myself, Mel. I couldn't control myself at all and I stabbed myself with a kitchen knife… who does that?"
"People who need help." Melissa replied simply, still running her fingers through his hair. "You needed help, and you didn't get the right kind of help. So guess what happened? You got hurt, because you kept trying… to- to do it on your own."
Lucas sighed shakily and hid his face again, trembling violently. "I wish I didn't have to deal with all this shit, Mel… I want it to just go away…"
Melissa had a soft look on her face, starting to feel worried. What had gotten into him all of a sudden? He hadn’t been like this the last few times, had he? “I know, Lu… I know you want it to go away. But it’s not that easy, love. I wish it was though.”
"I'm sorry… I-I'm sorry, Mel…" Lucas gripped Melissa tightly, a couple tears rolling down his cheeks. "P-Please don't go, Mel… please… don't leave me…"
“Lu, honey, I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere. Not now.” Melissa whispered weakly, kissing the top of his head. “I promise, I’m not leaving yet.”
Lucas hiccuped weakly as he clung to Melissa for dear life. Cody huddled up against Lucas in an attempt to calm him. "I need you…"
Melissa let him hold on tightly, resting her chin on the top of his head. “I wish I could stay with you the entire time. But I can’t, Lu. I promise I’ll come back, though.” She whispered weakly, holding onto him tightly. “What’s got you so freaked out? Did… did I do this?”
"I-I just… I dunno, Mel…" Lucas whispered. "I've really missed you… I-I don't want you to leave me, Mel, I need you…"
“I know, babe. But… but you know I can’t stay forever.” Melissa whispered weakly, bringing him closer to herself. “I really wish I could, but I can’t. I will come back, though.”
"W-When?" Lucas asked in a weak, wavering voice. "When are you gonna come back? Do you promise you will?"
“I can try to come back tomorrow… and if not tomorrow, then as soon as possible.” Melissa whispered softly, kissing him. “I promise with everything in me, I’ll come back.”
"O-Okay…" Lucas whispered, still holding tightly to Melissa. "I missed you, Mel… I don't want you to have to go again…"
“I don’t want to have to leave either, but I don’t exactly have a choice. I want to tell you I can stay, but I also don’t want to lie to you.” Melissa sighed weakly, leaning up against him.
Lucas nodded a bit and hiccuped again, keeping his hold on Melissa. "I don't want you to be gone for so long again…"
Melissa nodded as well, playing with his hair in attempt to calm him down. "I won't be… I promise you, it won't be that long ever again."
"Okay, o-okay…" Lucas leaned into Melissa's hand a bit, a couple more tears rolling down his cheeks as he buried his face in the other's shoulder.
Melissa continued to run her fingers through his hair, kissing the top of his head. "I'm so sorry, Lu… I didn't want to wait this long, but things got… complicated back home. I promise it won't happen again."
"W-What happened, Mel?" He asked weakly. "What was complicated? Did I do something wrong? Is there anything I can do to fix it?"
"Hey, hey relax." Melissa whispered, curling back up to him. "You don't need to worry about it. You've got enough on your mind."
"B-But I wanna know what happened…" Lucas whispered weakly. "If I fix it, you won't have to be gone so long again…"
"I know, Lu, but you don't need need to worry." Melissa insisted, nuzzling up against his cheek. "I won't be gone as long next time. I promise."
"I wanna know, Mel… what happened…?" Lucas asked again, clearly still very nervous and shaky.
