Melissa looked over to him, her stomach turning. The way he said it definitely brought the reality in. "I-I guess not… though- I um… I talked to the doctor. Asked him questions."
Melissa looked over to him, her stomach turning. The way he said it definitely brought the reality in. "I-I guess not… though- I um… I talked to the doctor. Asked him questions."
"O-Oh… what did he say?" Lucas asked weakly. He felt a bit queasy with fear and he still seemed very uneasy.
"Well… depends what you want to know. He said a lot, honestly." Melissa whispered, playing with her hair to distract herself. "Where should I start?"
"Maybe start with something that might make me feel better about it?" Lucas asked weakly. He really didn't mean to come off as rude, but he was so exhausted and just sick of the whole situation.
"Umm… well, if I understood correctly, they have pet therapy. So even if you can't take Cody, you'll still have some kind of companion." Melissa offered softly, tracing circles into her jeans.
Lucas sighed shakily. "B-But I want Cody, not some random dog… is there any way for me to bring him instead?"
"I don't know, Lu…" Melissa sighed weakly, trying to think over the conversation. "I-I think he needs to be a certified service dog..?"
"W-Well, how do we get him certified? I don't wanna be there without him…" Lucas whispered weakly.
“I… I don’t know. I didn’t ask the doctor- because… well I doubted he would know.” Melissa whispered, seeming distracted. Though she was trying her best not to seem insensitive.
Lucas sighed and nodded. "I just… I-I won't know anyone or anything in there… if there's any way to have Cody with me, I want to look into it…"
"Of course- I understand that." Melissa whispered, pulling her loosely braided hair over her shoulder. "I… I'll make sure to ask dad later."
Lucas nodded again and was silent for a while. "It just… it's all sinking in, Mel. I feel so cold and I can't think straight through how scared I am…"
Melissa looked up at him, slowly starting to get up. "Would… um, if I was… was close, would that help any?" She asked softly, sitting on the edge of her seat.
"I guess so… I don't think it would hurt, anyway…" Lucas sighed. "Assuming you don't like, lay on my arm or anything."
Melissa nodded a little, slowly getting up. "Where do you want me?" Melissa asked softly, sitting down on the edge.
"Wherever you're most comfortable, I guess…" Lucas sighed and held his good arm out to Melissa.
Melissa carefully lay down next to him, curling up against him. Even if it only lasted a little bit, the closeness to him was definitely comforting. Especially knowing this wouldn't happen again for a while… "I'm so, so sorry…"
"It's not your fault, Mel…" Lucas murmured in reply, burying his face in Melissa's shoulder. "It's my own… we've been over this, and I don't feel like arguing…"
Melissa nodded weakly, feeling tears stinging at her eyes. She didn't try arguing, and she didn't try talking. She was so tired— but she stayed awake. The idea of loosing any time she had with him, that was awful to her.
"I-I don't want us to leave on an argument, Mel… I dunno how long it'll be until I get to see you again…" Lucas whispered.
"I know… I honestly don't want you to leave at all. I want you to stay-" Melissa's voice gave way as a weak sigh escaped. "I… I honestly don't have any idea what's going to happen when you're gone… I'm worried, Lu…"
Lucas whimpered quietly and huddled closer to Melissa. "W-What if people notice I'm gone? What are we supposed to tell the people that we don't really trust?"
"I can deal with that, Lu…" Melissa whispered, kissing his head. "I don't want you to worry about anything more. You've got enough on your mind right now."
Lucas nodded and buried his face further into Melissa's shoulder. "W-We should probably come up with something though just in case anyone asks you…"
Melissa nodded a little, curling up closer. The lack of this had definitely gotten to her, as she was growing more clingy. "We probably should- but I honestly can't think."
"Um…. car crash, maybe? I'm not sure that would cover months unless it was a really bad crash, though…"
"And I'd probably have been in the crash, too… we always go everywhere together." Melissa mumbled, growing numb. "But I can always use that as a last resort."
"Mm… fell off the cliff near my house? That could probably get me hospitalized for a while, especially if you said I was comatose."
"Maybe…" Melissa mumbled, not letting that thought in. She couldn't think about it, it would make her feel way worse than she already did. "I- um, what do I do if people try to send you stuff?"
"I'm not sure… you might be able to bring things when we're visiting at the hospital… but I'm really not sure, depending on what people are trying to send."
