“Just when you turn corners, but not tight turns,” Nick explained.
“Just when you turn corners, but not tight turns,” Nick explained.
"Okay…" Eventually, Cas seemed to get the hang of it and was doing slightly better. He was still pretty terrible, but he at least understood the mechanics of the game now.
“You’re getting it!” Nick said with a grin. By the last race, he thought that Cas had improved significantly. “Maybe someday you can even beat the master. Which is me.”
"Are you like, the best one in the world or something?" Cas asked, crossing the finish line in eighth, which felt like it was good for him.
“I’m the best one out of my friends,” Nick retorted. “I think I’m pretty good.”
"Mm…" Cas was quiet for a few seconds. "Is this what it's like to have friends?" He asked.
Nick blinked, unsure whether to feel glad that Cas seemed to be having a good time or sad because he hadn’t experienced any real friendships. “Yeah, it is,” he said, giving the other boy a smile.
Cas nodded a bit. "Are you allergic to cats?" He asked, looking over at Nick. "I have a cat… I usually bring him everywhere because he's trained and stuff, but my foster parents wouldn't let me take him to school because they thought I would get bullied for him. Apparently I didn't exactly need his help with that."
“No, I’m not allergic,” Nick replied. “Having a cat sounds cool, though. What’s his name?”
"His name is Nix… he's technically like, an emotional support therapy animal or something. I don't remember the technical term, but he's got papers that say I can bring him anywhere."
“Oh, nice,” Nick said. “What kind of cat is he? Is he fluffy?”
"He's really fluffy, yeah. I don't really know what breed he is, but he's got long black fur and really pretty blue eyes. He's super sweet."
“He sounds adorable,” Nick said with a grin.
"He is. I'll probably bring him to school tomorrow… he'll just sit in my lap all day. He's really chill."
“Can I pet him?” Nick asked excitedly, eyes shining.
"Yeah, of course. Getting pet all the time is basically his job. For me, anyway." Cas shrugged. "When should I bring him over?"
“Whenever you want,” Nick responded. “Cats are so cute, so you should bring him next time you come over!”
"Alright." Cas smiled softly. "When do you wanna hang out next? Actually, wait… I'm bringing him to school tomorrow, so you'll see him then."
“Sounds good to me,” Nick responded. “I can’t wait to see him.”
"Mhmm. What else do you wanna do while I'm here?" He asked, looking up at the TV screen.
“Are you ready to try riding a bike?” Nick asked. “Or I can start teaching you how to read.”
"Um… I-I dunno… either is okay, I guess?" Cas fidgeted nervously, looking away.
“We can start with reading, because we’ve already done some fun stuff today so we could save bike riding for another day,” Nick suggested.
"Alright…" Cas sighed softly, knowing he was about to feel incredibly stupid. "Um… what's the best thing to start with?" He asked.
“Learning the alphabet,” replied Nick. “That part should be easy enough, I think.”
Cas flushed a bit. "Um… I-I already know that much, I just… can't really put the letters together…"
(sorry for disappearing for like a month!)
“Okay, then we can start there,” Nick agreed, reconfiguring his plan in his mind.
(Lmao no problem)
Cas fidgeted nervously, looking away. "Um… so… how exactly are we going to do this?" He asked.
“That’s a good question,” responded Nick. “How about if I wrote down some simple sentences and you try to read them?”
Cas flushed a bit. "Um… I'm not sure how well that'll work. I still don't know how to read, Nick… I'd probably just look stupid."
