Nick still wasn’t entirely convinced, but let the subject drop. Cas was clearly uncomfortable. “So, are you excited for homecoming?” he asked.
Nick still wasn’t entirely convinced, but let the subject drop. Cas was clearly uncomfortable. “So, are you excited for homecoming?” he asked.
"Um… homecoming…?" Cas fidgeted a bit, seeming nervous and completely bewildered. He'd never been to or even heard of homecoming before.
"Yeah, it's a dance," Nick explained. "There's also a homecoming football game the night before and then everyone gets dressed up and comes back to the school to dance to crappy music. It'll be fun!"
"Oh, um… I don't… know how to dance…" Cas said awkwardly. "And it's not like I know anyone here, so like… who would I even go with?"
“You don’t have to go with anyone, or you can go with a group of friends,” Nick suggested. “I’ve always just gone with my friends.”
"Right… I don't know what I'd do there, though." Cas shrugged. "Aren't you supposed to… you know… dance?"
“You can,” Nick said with a shrug. “I’m horrible at dancing too. My first school dance my friends and I just sat there.”
"But that doesn't sound very exciting." Cas laughed a bit, adjusting his grip on his things.
“It’s more about having fun with your friends than the actual dance itself, I think,” Nick mused. “Sometimes dancing is fun and sometimes, well, the dance just doesn’t seem fun at all. But trust me, it actually is fun if you go with the right people.”
Cas nodded a bit. "Well, maybe I'll go if I become close enough friends with someone, but I dunno…"
“Jemma, Leo, and I are going so you can come with us maybe,” Nick offered.
"Um… I guess they're your other friends?" Cas asked. "They're not like Brandon and Ian are they?"
"No, they're not," Nick replied. "They're not always easy to get along with, but they aren't bullies."
Cas nodded a bit. "Alright… I think the bell is about to ring." He glanced up at the clock with a soft hum."
Just then the bell rang, and Nick grinned. "Wow, perfect timing."
"We have first period together, right?" Cas looked up at Nick questioningly.
“Yeah,” he said. “Luckily that teacher is pretty lax.”
Cas nodded a bit and started walking with Nick. "What subject is it, again?"
“English,” Nick responded, wondering how Cas didn’t remember. They were there every day.
"Ah… right…" Cas definitely wasn't looking forward to that. He didn't understand an ounce of the subject.
Nick grinned. “I don’t know about you, but English is my best subject.”
"Right…" Cas laughed weakly. "I'm… um… not fantastic at it…"
“Not everyone can have my awesome writing skills,” Nick joked, trying to ease the tension a bit.
"Haha… yeah…" Cas stepped into the classroom and sat down with a soft sigh.
Nick took his seat and followed along with the lesson, honestly a bit bored. At least until the teacher mentioned a new assigned reading. Nick loved reading.
Cas sighed softly when he heard the word 'reading'. Finally, class ended, and he got up.
Nick put his stuff in his bag as usual, excited. He had already read Catch-22, which was their assigned book, and was looking forward to discussing it. He was basically the model student in English (in science or math, not so much).
Cas was not a model student in any subject at all. He was just immensely stressed at the moment and he felt so stupid. He didn't know anything that they were talking about in school.
“So, have you read Catch-22 before?” Nick asked Cas, once he’d walked over. “It’s a pretty good book.”
No, I can't read. "Um… no… I don't really read much…" Or at all. Cas sighed softly.
