Lucas shrugged. "I always figured he knew best, to be honest. Like I said, I was a pushover, but I was also a coward. He always sounded so confident about his ideas that I just kinda believed him."
Lucas shrugged. "I always figured he knew best, to be honest. Like I said, I was a pushover, but I was also a coward. He always sounded so confident about his ideas that I just kinda believed him."
"Do you think you would still do that now?" Melissa asked him softly, pulling his arm around her shoulders before relaxing back in to him. "Or did that start to fade as you got older?"
Lucas shook his head a bit. "No, no… I eventually wisened up and stopped listening to him. He was still able to pressure me into some stuff because I was terrified of saying no, but I don't think he'd have any influence over me now. I'm less stupid."
"Mm, that makes me feel loads better… my little Lu is growing up." Melissa cooed in a teasing tone, nuzzling into his cheek. "And you weren't stupid. Just naive. There's a difference."
Lucas flushed red and buried his face in Melissa's shoulder. "W-Well, I'm seventeen now… I'm almost an adult. It'd be pretty pathetic if I was still being controlled by my brother."
Melissa laughed a little, petting the top of his head. "I know a lot of adults that are controlled by people that they're not even related to. Sometimes, they're not even friends."
"Yeah, yeah…" Lucas relaxed into Melissa's touch. "But still. I like to think I'm more of my own person now."
"Mm, yeah… makes sense. And one of the best things about your person, is that you're my guy." Melissa hummed out, leaning her head back with a little smile. "I love you so much, it hurts a little at times."
Lucas flushed and kissed Melissa softly. "I love you too, Mel… thanks for bringing me here." He smiled and looked out at the flowers.
"Of course, Lu. I wanted to make your birthday special, and am hoping it's working." Melissa hummed a little, leaning in to him. "If there's anything I can do to make it better, please tell me."
"It's great so far, Mel. I haven't gotten to celebrate my birthday in years." Lucas smiled softly and kissed Melissa again. "I'm having a wonderful time."
"Mm, I'm happy to hear that." Melissa hummed with a smile pulling up. "Though I have one request, before I forget about it."
"What's your request, Mel?" Lucas asked, his smile lingering as he looked over at her.
"You're not going to like it, but I don't want you to protest or pout when I give you your present. And yes, I got you something." Melissa hummed, kissing his cheek softly. "That's all I ask."
Lucas whined softly, fidgeting a bit. "But Mel… what do you want me to do, then?"
Melissa smirked a little, kissing his lips before speaking. "Accept it with a smile, and then whine the next day. I'm not that picky, I just want you to take it without complaints today."
"Alright, alright…" Lucas sighed softly and returned the kiss. "But whining in protest is kinda my thing."
Melissa laughed a little, wrapping her arms around his waist. "I know, but I'm just asking that you wait to do it. Do you promise that you won't?" She pleaded with him, pouting a bit.
"Fine, fine… I'll try my best, Mel… how long are we gonna stay here?" He asked, looking around at the flowers again.
"Not sure… though I brought some lunch. I just…" Melissa fell quiet, pulling away from Lucas. "… I forgot where I put it…"
Lucas smiled softly. "How about we look for it together, hmm?" He got to his feet and held out his hand to Melissa. "Where do you last remember seeing it?"
"I… I thought I had put it with the blanket." Melissa stated, taking his hand and standing up with him. "I seriously can't remember… god I hope I didn't leave it at home."
"Hmm…" Lucas wandered around through the flowers, looking for anything that was out of place. Eventually, he stopped in his tracks, staring down at a little toy car on the ground.
Melissa heard the rustling of the flowers stop, and turned to see Lucas standing still. "Lu? Everything alright? Did you find it?" She asked him softly, coming up and resting a hand on his shoulder.
Lucas bent down and picked up the little car. He observed it with a soft hum. It seemed to be very old. "This was Claus's."
"O-oh… I-" Melissa watched his face, feeling her breath get caught in her throat. She was waiting to see how he would take it, doubting it would be a positive response.
Lucas hesitated for a few seconds before smiling weakly and putting the toy car in his pocket. "He lost a ton of these. He was never very careful with his toys." He kept walking with a wavering sigh.
Melissa was taken aback by his smile, relaxing a little. "He wasn't ever really careful with anything, was he?" She asked softly, coming up and taking his hand.
"No, he wasn't." Lucas laughed softly, lacing his fingers with Melissa's. "I was never a big fan of the cars. I couldn't ever build the fancy tracks that Claus could."
She listened to him, and sighed in content. It was nice to get to hear him sound happy. "That makes sense…" Melissa hummed softly, smiling up at him.
