“Ayyyy broke squad.” Jax laughed a bit to himself while Ethan just rolled his eyes.

"Would probably be less broke if Mom sold everything in her wine cellar but that's not happening anytime soon."

“Ouch. I feel that.”

"Yeah, especially not when she spends 99% of her time in there."

“That sounds like it sucks.”

"Hey, it's one less family member to worry about though. She's only a problem when she's sober."

“Well that’s nice at least.”

"Walking into my house is like walking into a field of landmines with an unfinished map of where they actually are."

“Yeah it used to be like that for me. Then I just…got rid of the landmines.”

"Well good for you. I can't really do that."

He smiled a bit. “Someday. Just gotta be patient.”

"The more patient I am, the less likely I am to survive to see things get better."

“You’re so negative.” He gently flicked her in the forehead.

"What can I say? I was never really raised to be positive."

He rolled his eyes. “Excuses excuses.”

"You live a day in my shoes and let's see if you say that after."

“I still would.”

"Yeah, sure, whatever you say."

“I would” he insisted, he definitely seemed sure about it. “And I’d do it to prove it but I don’t think your parents would believe I was you.”

"Okay, fine then, you can take my place tomorrow. You can put up with what I usually have to."

“Seriously, there’s no chance that’d actually work.”

"You wanna bet?"

Jax bit his lip. If someone challenged him he was always going to take the bait. It was his fatal flaw. He looked up at Ethan who just said. “Don’t go looking at me for help, you’re on your own.”

"Here's your challenge. Get through one day with me at home and be able to look me in the eye and still be able to say that I'm making up excuses."

“..fine”

"Good luck. You'll need it."

“Thanks for the vote of confidence.”

"You should know that confidence isn't exactly my thing."

“Yes I can tell. But all I was trying to say was…you don’t need to be raised in a positive environment in order to act that way.”
