Smiling softly, she pulled back a bit. "Do you forgive me?" Melissa asked still running her fingers through his soft hair. "Because I couldn't live with myself if you didn't."
Smiling softly, she pulled back a bit. "Do you forgive me?" Melissa asked still running her fingers through his soft hair. "Because I couldn't live with myself if you didn't."
"Of course I forgive you, Mel…" Lucas sighed and lay his head back on Melissa's shoulder, smiling softly.
"Mmm… good." With that said, she went back to spacing. Mindlessly she continued to pet him, starring off through the hanging branches of the tree.
Lucas didn't mind this at all, of course. He could enjoy nature and get pet at the same time. What more could a guy want?
For a few minutes they just sat there in peace. It was actually really nice, despite Melissa's starting to get anxious in the quiet. She was bouncing her foot and leg like crazy, still starring off. "You know… there may be an actual reason behind why this place is so calming to you."
"Hmm…?" Lucas opened his eyes to look up at Melissa curiously. "And what might that be, Mel?" He asked.
"I don't want to bore you, so I'll cut to the chase. Do flowers normally grow on this tree?" Melissa hummed as she looked down at him. "If not, then never mind."
"You could never bore me, Mel, and yes. I do find a fair amount of flowers on the tree. Why?" Lucas shifted a bit to be more comfortable, eventually ending up looking up at Melissa with his head in her lap.
"Well, flowers are said to help with physical and mental health. Like when brought to hospitals after someone gets sick. If you found this place after a hard day, it could be treated the same." Melissa elaborated, still petting his head with a smile. "And it's not just some myth, it's a scientific thing."
Lucas smiled softly. "And I've always really liked flowers anyways. I've got a particular fondness for sunflowers since they were my mom's favorite, but they're not super common around here. The only ones I know of locally are in the field by my house, and I think we planted those ourselves."
"You had sunflowers?" Melissa asked softly, glancing down to where he laid. "That's so sweet… I- you're just more likeable by the second. I don't understand why you can be so cute." Sighing a bit, she knew his face would flare up once again. But she couldn't help it.
As expected, Lucas was quickly red and flustered again. "I-I mean… um… my mom really liked them, so my dad went and bought seeds, s-so… we've got sunflowers. I remember when I was little that… I was annoyed by them, actually. Because they were taller than me." He laughed softly. "We should go see them some time."
(That would be me though…)
Melissa smiled more warmly at the sight of his flustered state. She felt bad that it happened so easily, but he was super cute when it happened. "I'd honestly love to. I've only ever really seen them in pictures." She whispered, resting her hands on either side of herself. "Are they just as pretty in person?"
(Lucas is baby)
Lucas nodded, still smiling gently. "They're gorgeous. Before my entire life went awry, we used to go out and tend to them as a family. They're really tall and strong now. Probably taller than I am."
(He is, and I love him.)
"You know, that sounds so nice. I really can't fully imagine it." Melissa spoke gingerly, picturing a younger version of Lucas with his family. It was a sweet setting. Of course, until everything turned rapidly on them.
"It was nice to see a soft side of Claus, and of my dad… I mean, it was all of our favorite things to do. Just going out to water the sunflowers together… we didn't really have much internet or electronics or anything. We had some sheep, and my mom would make shirts for Claus and I out of their wool… life was good back then."
Sighing a bit, she dropped her gaze back down to him. "I… I'm really sorry. I wish I could fix everything for you. I wish I could go back, and make it so they were both still alive. To when you didn't have so many mental issues… to where life was so simple…"
Lucas smiled weakly. "There's nothing you could have done, Mel. As much as I love to think back on those times and wish things were still that way, they can't be. I've accepted that at least, even if I'm still royally screwed up."
Melissa was in denial, very much unlike Lucas. "Just because you have, doesn't mean I have to. There has got to be a way to fix it… it's not fair. You deserve so much better than what you have." She insisted, frustrated at how unchangeable his situation was.
"Mel, we can't bring people back from the dead… my father can only improve so much in prison. The house is in shambles and the sheep are long gone. The only thing that's still there is the sunflowers."
"I- I know I can't fix any of that. I just… I just wish I could. It hurts me, knowing you could have had a better life than this. I feel like a total jerk for not being able to fix it." Melissa continued her argument weakly, avoiding looking down at him. "It physically hurts to know all of this."
"I'm sorry, Mel…" Lucas sighed softly and closed his eyes. "I didn't mean to upset you or anything. But honestly, there's nothing you could have done."
"Don't be sorry… I'm just being irrational again." Melissa mumbled, leaning back in to the trunk of the tree. "I still wish I could fix all of this, though. I'd give anything to see you happy and with your whole family again."
Lucas smiled weakly and leaned up to kiss Melissa softly. "I know, darling. And I love you for caring so much, trust me. There just isn't anything we can do."
Nodding a bit, she dropped the subject as she forced a weak smile on her lip. “I guess I’ll just have to forget about it then… I love you.” Melissa whispered, going back to petting the top of his head once more.
"I love you too, Mel." Lucas lay his head back down in Melissa's lap and relaxed, enjoying the petting.
Melissa let him settle before petting his head again. “Now that that’s over. Are we just going to sit here for awhile? Or did you have something else in mind?” She hummed, trying to focus on relaxing and talking to him at the same time.
"Sitting and relaxing sounds nice… but if you want to do something else, that's fine." Lucas leaned his head into Melissa's hand a bit.
Shaking her head, Melissa smiled as she delivered her next statement. "I'm happy as long as you're around." She hummed, falling quiet once more.
Lucas smiled softly as well, seeming pretty happy for now. "I love you, Mel~" He purred, keeping his eyes closed for now.
