Jacob chuckled. "He sounds like a good guy. I hope you two are happy," he said genuinely.
"We are," Kenzie said softly, looking back at Hunter. Her smile wavered when she saw the look in his eyes, contrasting his expression.
"Well, you said that you wanted to get home, so I won't keep you any longer," Jacob declared. "I'll see you later."
Kenzie faced her stepfather again and nodded. "Yeah, see you later." Turning to Hunter, she asked, "You ready to go?"

Hunter nodded at Kenzie before looking at Jacob. With the look on her face, Hunter realized Kenzie knew something was wrong with him. He really needed to keep a leash around his emotions.
“We’ll see you around then, Mr. Vetter,” Hunter finally said to him. “It was fun.”
He turned around and began walking towards the door before waiting for Kenzie to follow him.
Kenzie walked over and grabbed his hand, smiling up at him a bit. As soon as they were in the car, she asked, "You okay?"
Hunter blinked before offering her a grin.
“I’m oakay,” he grinned. “Anyway, there’s some place we need to go. I need to do something, and I don’t want to leave you alone so I’ll be dragging you along with me.”
"Oh. All right. Um… So how long is it going to take? Don't forget, you promised me pizza, TV, and cuddles when we were done," Kenzie reminded him.
Hunter grinned.
“Of course. Don’t think I’ve forgotten about that.” He said, throwing an arm around Kenzie’s shoulders, steering her towards his car.
"Good," Kenzie replied simply as they walked to the car.
Hunter sat in his seat and brought the engine to life. After a few minutes, they found themselves away from the bustling city into a rocky road, passing trees as they drove by. It would take fifteen minutes to get to the cabin in the mountains, but only because Hunter knew the shortcut to it.
“We’re not lost,” Hunter clarified, even though Kenzie said nothing. “Don’t worry about it.”
Kenzie watched the trees go by for a bit before turning to face Hunter. "So… Where are we going?" she asked for the second time that day.
“I have a cabin,” Hunter replied slowly. “In the mountains. It’s not very high; it’s mostly surrounded by trees and greenery and whatnot, but it’s a quiet and secluded place.”
Hunter took a turn, this time getting swallowed up by the forest completely.
“Sorry about the bumps,” he said. “I should’ve told you beforehand that this was going to be a… rocky road trip.”
"Well, it's certainly beautiful," Kenzie mused as she went back to looking at the scenery.
Does she do that on purpose? Hunter mused to himself.
“Sure is,” he replied before his his eyes widened a fraction. “Look! There’s a monkey on your side. Do you see it?”
Kenzie turned back to Hunter, an amused smile on her face.
"We don't have monkeys here, babe," she pointed out. "Unless you're talking about yourself."
Hunter grinned.
“Look into the mirror and maybe you’ll find out,” he teased. “But seriously— oh, prepare yourself. The upcoming turn is a little… rough.”
Hunter said as he took a turn, the car sliding and hitting deeper bumps in the road.
“That’s just about the end of the rocky road,” Hunter informer Kenzie. “And in five more minutes until we reach the cabin.”
Kenzie snorted at Hunter's teasing and turned back to the window to stare out of it. She hummed in response to his update on how long it would take to get there.
Finally, Hunter parked his car and killed the engine.
“And we’re here,” he said to Kenzie as he got out of his car. He hoped Leo and the others finished, but he remembered to text him before they left Jacob’s. They should be done by now.

"Wow…" McKenzie breathed as she looked at the cabin. It was larger than any other cabin she had been to, and it was gorgeous! "You seriously know how to pick a cabin."

Hunter grinned.
“I also have a few others,” he admitted. “Maybe I’ll take you to all of them. But anyway, we should get inside now.”
Hunter lead Kenzie to the front door, and the minute he opened the door and ushered Kenzie inside, confetti being popped was heard along with a very loud cheer of ‘surprise!’ Well, as loud as it could have been, considering it was only Leo and Willow.

Kenzie stood in the entryway, her mouth hanging open slightly at the sight of her friends. She slowly turned to Hunter, tears filling her eyes.
"You planned this for me?" she asked quietly, wrapping her arms around his neck and burying her face in it. "Thank you."

Hunter grinned before hugging Kenzie back.
“I told you before that I’d do anything to make you happy.” He said, grinning as he kissed her head.
“Group hug!” Before Hunter knew it, Leo threw himself on them and joined the hug that was not meant for him.

Kenzie laughed as Willow joined in as well.
"Thanks, guys. You're awesome," she said when they had all pulled apart.
Willow smiled at her. "Anything for you, girl."

Hunter opened his mouth to thank Leo and Willow for their help when he noticed how close they stood next to each other. Hunter blinked, thinking nothing of it as he closed the door behind him.
“We’re always with you, Kenz,” Hunter said to Kenzie as he kissed her neck softly. “If you’re sad, we’ll cheer you up.”
“That’s right!” Leo piped up, throwing an arm around Kenzie, effectively hitting Hunter in the face. Hunter glared at him, and Leo stuck his tongue out in return. “We’re your friends and we’ll always be there for you. Right, Will? Actually, that’s pretty obvious since you’re her best friend, but whatever.”
