also I’m not completely sure if I’ll be able to change the background color after all, every time I try Krita decides it can’t even handle splitting one layer, crashes, and nearly overheats my computer in the process

If you want a good book with a true crime feel, read Sadie by Courtney Summers. But for the love of God, look into the content warnings.

I really don't feel comfortable sharing what I'm researching once it's reached a certain level.
