"He didn't treat you right?" Hunter questioned, his voice edgy. "Or did he try to replace your dad?"

"He didn't treat you right?" Hunter questioned, his voice edgy. "Or did he try to replace your dad?"

"No, no. He just…" Kenzie trailed off with a sigh, shaking her head before turning back to look at Hunter. "He was fun, I'll admit that, and he made my mom happy. He could even make me laugh so hard, sometimes. It's just that… He was never my dad, just my stepfather. I was never able to call him 'dad'. It was just too weird…"

"Yeah, I understand," Hunter nodded, making a right turn. "What's your favorite flower, Kenzie?"

Kenzie thought for a moment before answering, "Okay, I know this sounds really stereotypical of girls, but I actually really like roses. I think the pink ones are better than the red ones, though."

Hunter grinned.
"I don't think it's stereotypical," he replied. "Pink roses smell nice. I like black roses. I mean, those really dark red ones that look black. I like what it symbolizes."

"No, it totally is. Anyway, what does it symbolize?" Kenzie asked, tilting her head to one side.

"If you give someone a black rose, it sometimes means the death of a relationship or an idea," Hunter replied quietly. "But it also symbolizes rebirth or the beginning of something new."

"That's… both sad and beautiful," Kenzie said softly, turning back to the window.

"Isn't it?" Hunter murmured. "That's why I like that flower. Anyway, we're almost there."

"Okay. Any chance I could get you to tell me where we're going?" Kenzie asked, facing Hunter once again. "Or are you going to keep me in the dark until we get there?"

Hunter let a smile take over his lips.
"I'm going to keep you in the dark until we get there."

Kenzie rolled her eyes.

"You like to do that, don't you?" she asked, remembering when he brought her to the spa.

Hunter grinned.
"It makes the waiting worth it," he replied before parking the car near a small building. "And we're here."
Hunter killed the engine and stepped out of the car, waiting for Kenzie to join him.

Kenzie got out of the car and walked over to Hunter.

"So… Where are we?" she asked, looking around.

Hunter took Kenzie's hand in his and led her into the building. While it looked small from the outside, it was a bit bigger on the inside.
"Hunter!" a woman exclaimed from behind them and Hunter turned around with a smile. "You're here already. I hadn't had time to prepare…"
"That's okay, Lynn," Hunter cut her off. The brunette gave him a disappointed look, but Hunter pretended he didn't notice. "Anyway, take us to the room."
Lyn grinned.
"With pleasure. Follow me."
As Lyn guided them to the 'room,' Hunter leaned over to whisper in Kenzie's ear.
"That's Lyn. She's a huge cat person; will take in any stray cat that she finds. She's also a vet, so it makes things easier," Hunter said to her. They finally stopped in front of a door and Lyn opened it, stepping aside.
"Well, Kenzie, the answer to your question is…" Hunter stepped into the room as a bunch of cats crowded around their legs, mewling excitedly. "We're in Lyn's Cat Collection. I thought this would make you feel better, considering how you like cats and all."

(Dude, that's literally the best way to cheer her up…)

A huge grin split Kenzie's face as they walked into the room, and she immediately sat down and started petting and playing with the cats. Casting a glance back up at Hunter, she said, "This is amazing. Thank you."

She picked up a fluffy gray cat and set it in her lap. It started to purr loudly as she pet it, and it gently kneaded her legs with its soft paws.

(Omg, really??)

Hunter grinned and sat down, rubbing a cat as it purred.
"I take it you like the surprise," Hunter said, feeling his heart bursting at Kenzie's glowing face.

(She really likes cats.)

"Yes, of course!" Kenzie exclaimed, bending down to softly kiss the top of the cat's head. "Cats are one of my favorite things in the world."

"I'm glad your plan worked, Hunt," Lyn grinned. "I'll leave you both here. Stay however long you'd like. They're trained cats, so they won't hurt you unless they-"
"Unless they feel threatened," Hunter cut her off. "Lyn, you say the same thing every time I come here."
Lyn shrugged and offered a sly smile before walking out. Hunter turned his attention back to Kenzie, how was looking better than she had been yesterday.
