"People said you were hot. I wanted to see if it was true or not. And you are. But not just physically, darling." they grinned, patting the space next to themself in hopes they might want to sit down near them.
"People said you were hot. I wanted to see if it was true or not. And you are. But not just physically, darling." they grinned, patting the space next to themself in hopes they might want to sit down near them.
Neer scoffed and grabbed Eden's hand instead, yanking them to their feet. "Then you can leave, darling." They let go of the intruder's hand, gesturing vaguely to the garden gate as they turned back to their dahlias. "I'm in no mood for this today. You can show yourself out."
"Moody little thing. That's not all I came for. Your mind is so… buzzing, exciting. I'd love to hear you talk more." the smile dropped from everywhere but the eyes.
Neer's smile finally dropped off their face and if their joy was a glorious thing then their annoyance was a joyless one. It was funny how one tiny frown could steal all the light from around them. How it made even the sunshine feel cold. "I'm not a little thing," they said, kneeling down beside the dahlias again. "Get out of my garden. Now."
"You're shorter than me, and you can die, obviously. You're little. But fine, I'll respect your boundaries." shit, fuck, dammit, fuck, motherfucker. Those were the words that went through Psyche's head as they slowly backed away from the tepid human.
Neer's mind caught on that second part, but… lots of people came through their garden gate. Lots of people looking for the legendary beauty. Lots of people who thought lots of strange things. "What a gracious little thing you are," he replied airily. "Gate's to your left."
"I'm not- I'm not gracious, alright?" they growled. "I could make all your flowers wilt right now if I wanted to!" a stern glare.
Neer raised an eyebrow at the sudden mood change, filing away the second part. There was lots of hubbub over them, sure, but a god would never visit their little garden. "Oh? Does it feel bad when people put diminutive labels on you?"
"No! I'm just…. okay, fine, if it helps them yes. It isn't nice." they admitted. Since the conversation was still going, should they stay, or leave? Nobody knew. Or somebody did, just not them.
(What if Psyche pops in daily to check up on Neer, and that's how they bond?)
They laughed. "Yeah. Mysterious, that. The gate's still to your left, love." The pet name slipped out before they could really think about it, but Neer had never been one to care much for formalities. "Have a good afternoon."
(Oh hell yeah.)
"I probably won't. I'm a very busy enby, you know. Much to do, much to see, probably won't see you again." they lied, and flustered, left.
The next day they reappeared with a basket of pears and some sparkling cider, sitting in the same place they'd met with the human- Neer, they knew by osmosis.
Neer laughed and spent the rest of the day considering this Eden enby who had decided to drop by. Funnier than the usual visitors, and almost sweet enough to be tolerable. They chatted with the dahlias about them until the stars rolled in.
The next day Neer was still dressed shabbily in torn jeans and an old shirt, hands red with clay as they tore out the old irises. "You're back," they said by way of greeting. "Nice basket. I thought you were too busy to see me again."
"I'm not busy anymore. Pear? I like them, they're sweet and crunchy but also kind of squishy in a good way." they blinked a couple times, looking down at Neer.
Neer laughed. "My hands are covered in dirt, love." They yanked out one of the flowers by its roots, tossing it over into a pile with the rest. "I'm not going to eat clay just because you wanna offer me fruit, even if I'm sure it's as sweet as the gesture you're trying to make."
"I could feed it to you." they suggested, then snapped their fingers above their head. "Or! You could wash your hands!" Psyche smiled, the idea was simple, but brilliant.
Neer gave them a soft smile. "I'm not stepping foot in that house until I've done today's work, so I'm afraid washing is gonna have to get struck off your list. Any other brilliant ideas?"
"Again, I could feed them to you? They're not worth missing out on, they're imbued with the ambrosia of Rosepine Mesa." all those words would be foreign to the mortal, shit. But they were heavenly, one of Earth's best pleasures.
"Ambrosia, huh?" They turned around with a humoring smile on their face, wiping their hands off on their jeans and leaving long red streaks in their wake. "I guess I just have to try it then. Cut off a slice for me. And tell me what the hell a Rosepine Mensa is while you do it."
"A place with lots of dirt and rocks. But redder. And prettier. And some grass, in Rosepine. And pears. Actually, they were imported, and cultivated there…" they rambled on as they sliced up one of the orangeish gold fruits, slipping a slice past Neer's lips. A knuckle brushed against the soft, rosy pink skin, just the smallest sensation but enough to make it vaguely emotional.
Neer nodded along to the description, watching Eden grab the fruit and then opening their mouth obediently as they raised it to their lips. They weren't shy as they moaned at the taste, fastening their lips around Eden's fingers to suck the juice off. "Give me another," they demanded once the other's hands were licked clean, greedy for more. "How do they grow these? I need some for my garden."
"You do realize how… uh, word finding, my worst enemy…. never mind." they sighed, forgetting that 'intimate' existed for the moment. Probably for the best. "Yeah, sure." they gave them another, then popped a slice in their own mouth, savoring the taste. "And you can't grow them here. Something about the pH balance and it being a secret, sacred art, I dunno."
Neer laughed and leaned back against Eden's chest little, licking their lips with a satisfied smile. It wasn't often that suitors brought gifts, maybe they should give this one a shot. Eden was nice enough and knew when to talk most of the time and best of all they were as pretty as any flower, so it was no hardship to keep them around. "That's a damn shame, I'd pay good money for those secrets. I'm always looking to expand the garden."
"I've got some in my garden." Psyche said. They were quiet for a moment, thoughtful. "Do you think we're friends now? I'm trying out the whole 'social interaction' thing."
Neer hummed thoughtfully, This was the second visit and Eden had him lounging in his lap like an overgrown cat, that probably meant something right? "Nah," they decided. "Not yet. Just keep spoiling me, I'm sure you'll get there soon."
"Sounds like a plan. Say, you don't get many people out here for someone who's… well, well known. I mean, I'm good at finding people but seriously, this whole setup… pret-ty cautious." they said, running a hand through Neer's hair.
"It is designed that way. I get the odd straggler here and there, but for the most part, it's very peaceful." They leaned into Eden a little more. "You've gotta give an enby a break, you know? Dealing with all the people who just had to see me in the city was exhausting, plus all I had was one measly rooftop to garden on which was just pitiful. How did you manage to do it anyways?"
They waved a hand, wiggling their fingers while doing so. "Magic," they chuckled, resting the hand and staring at Neer, lovestruck.
Neer laughed, elbowing Eden in the ribs gently. "Keep your secrets then, I'll have to up security anyway. Feed me another pear?"
"Yeah, sure." they giggled, putting another in their maybe-friend, definitely-unrequited-love's mouth.
Neer licked the juice from thier fingers again and then turned to give Eden a brilliant smile as a reward. "You're so eager to please," they murmured, sounding appreciative. "Who else do you have riding you? Nobody gets this sweet on their own."
