The surgery was going well and Nick was out sooner than expected. The rolled him into the room, wires attached to him. “Is he stable?” The doctor asked as the other nodded. “Perfect.”

"Nick!" Lucas cried, jumping to his feet and rushing over despite the doctor's protests. He just wanted to be by Nick's side again.

“Lucas we have to say one thing. Nick is in a coma…” the doctors held their heads down.

"W-What?!" Lucas froze, gripping Nick's hand tightly. His face went stark white. "How? For… f-for how long?"

“When whoever hit him with a bat hit his neck and slowly put him into a coma. It happened on the way here. It should be around 4 weeks. You still need to go to school, you haven an education so you need to be at school,” the doctors explained.

Tears stung Lucas's eyes. "B… B-But he needs me! I can't leave him here when he's in this condition!" He entwined his fingers with Nick's.

“You can stay with him over night, but during the day you have to go to school. Is that fair?” The doctors asked.

"I… I guess so…" He reluctantly agreed, still clinging to Nick's hand. He clearly wasn't willing to leave him at the moment.

“You can stay for the rest of the day though,” the doctors left, tapping Lucas on the shoulder first.

Lucas nodded, sighing shakily. He let the nurses move Nick to the cot and waited for them to leave before he lay beside him. He curled up against Nick's side and started to cry softly into the other's shoulder.

While Nick was unconscious, Dylan and his buddies were getting survey punished for what they did. "Do you have any idea the damage you caused?!" the principle yelled. He slammed his hand on the desk, grabbing their attention.

Lucas pulled Nick's arm over himself to try and mimic the other's warmth and comfort, but it just made him more distraught. Nick's limp arm held no warmth or comfort- without the other actively holding him, he pretty much got nothing from his closeness. Tears continued rolling down his pale cheeks until he inevitably fell asleep from exhaustion. He refused food when it was offered to him by the nurses a few hours later.

“Listen Lucas, you need to eat. I know you care about Nick, but you need to eat something. Nick came here a little while back and asked if they can help eating habits. He cares about you, if you’re not going to eat for me then do it for him…” the nurse placed a tray of food on the side table before walking out.

Lucas sighed and eyed the tray for a long while, deliberating. He was clearly conflicted. He wanted to please Nick, but he really didn't have the heart to eat anything. He couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't come back up, and if it did, he would have to leave Nick's side, if only temporarily. Maybe I can eat later… He decided, guilt gnawing at his empty stomach as he left the food untouched.

Just then Nick’s brother came in the room and leaned on the wall. He kind of looked like Nick and spoke like him too. “You should eat.”
