“We have all the time in the world. Well, all afternoon, I mean.” He interlaced his fingers with Jack’s. It was nice, even if just for platonic intimacy, but he wouldn’t complain about romance either.
“We have all the time in the world. Well, all afternoon, I mean.” He interlaced his fingers with Jack’s. It was nice, even if just for platonic intimacy, but he wouldn’t complain about romance either.
"Yeah." Jack laughed again. "I just…" he sighed. "If I wanted to kiss you, what would be your…reaction?" he asked slowly, a little shyly.
Lincoln’s gaze flickered from the fire to Jack’s face, looking at him with his eyes wide for a moment before answering. It took him a long moment to think about what to say. Finally, he opened his mouth to speak, “I…um…I wouldn’t… stop you.” He closed his mouth again and swallowed.
"Okay." Jack took a deep breath. "I just…I don't exactly know how to talk about this." He laughed breathily. "So…you wouldn't have a problem with it?"
Lincoln shook his head. “No, I wouldn’t have a issue with it.” He could feel his heart beating in his throat. He’d never kissed anyone before—was it happening now?
Jack nodded a little. He really did rather want to kiss Lincoln, but…he wasn't sure he should. "Alright." He closed his eyes for a moment. "I don't exactly know…"
“I’m not exactly sure…how,” he admitted hesitantly, under his breath. He wasn’t sure if he should have confessed that or not, or if it made any sense. Would it matter that he hadn’t kissed anyone before? He decided that if Jack didn’t get it at first, he wouldn’t further explain or talk about it.
"How to…kiss someone?" Jack replied. "That's fine. I can…oh. Oh. If you've never kissed someone before…I won't take your first kiss unless or until you want me to. I won't. I promise."
“Oh,” he shook his head, “It’s fine, it’s really fine. Honestly, I’ve resolved myself to the fact that I’ll live a romance-less life. Not to be dramatic or anything, but…” he trailed off, an awkward smile set there on his lips. “Anyway, I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m not…saving it for anyone in particular.” He winced at himself, worrying he said the wrong thing.
Jack smiled a little. "Mm. Alright." He replied. He still wasn't sure…he ran a hand through his hair. "Yeah. I get it. I just…I'm not sure it should be me, because…"
Lincoln placed his free hand in his lap, fidgeting with a seam in his waistcoat. He shifted his glance from the fire to Jack. “If I may ask…why?”
"Because I have to go back to my own time eventually." He replied slowly. "And…yeah." he shrugged slightly, not looking at Lincoln.
“Yes… I suppose you’re right.” Lincoln frowned and looked back to the fire. He pursed his lips in thought. He didn’t see himself having another chance of finding somebody like Jack. He might eventually settle down with a wife, but that didn’t mean he wanted to.
"I'm sorry." He said. "I…" He closed his eyes for a moment. "I just don't want to start something and then have to leave. I don't know what to do."
“It’s alright,” he pulled his hand out of Jack’s and clasped his hands in his lap, almost like he was praying. “I understand, I get it.” He tapped his thumb against his wrist-bone. “It’s only logical.”
Jack took a deep breath. "I'm sorry, I've made an awkward mess out of this, haven't I? Shit." He raked his hands through his hair, looking at the ceiling.
“No, it’s fine,” he repeated, trying to conceal the frown in his lips. Why would he ask what his reaction would be if he kissed him just to change his mind? Because it was be his first kiss. It was a logical reason.
Jack bit his lower lip. "I'm sorry if I…if I got your hopes up, I just…I don't want to kiss you and then…leave in a few days. I don't want to do that to you."
“I understand,” he replied simply, glancing over, offering him a smile. “I don’t hold it against you at all. Not even a little bit. I think you, actually.”
Jack nodded. "Alright. I mean…if you want me to kiss you, I…I will. But…" He shook his head a little.
Lincoln only shook his head. “No…not right now. It’s not the right…setting? It would be awkward.” He lightly smiled again.
"Yeah." Jack agreed. He still wished he hadn't created this strange awkwardness by bringing it up. He really did want to maybe kiss Lincoln someday, but…but he wasn't sure if that was a good idea.
Lincoln looked up to check the time on the clock in the corner. “Well, what time would you like to go to the bar?” He decided to change the subject, unsure what to say to add to the conversation.
Jack shrugged. "I… whenever you're ready." He replied, stretching and running his hands through his hair. "I'm good with whatever."
“Me too, I don’t think it’s open yet, though.” He rubbed his chin, falling quiet for a moment. “So…when we get there, what’s your preferred drink?”
Jack shrugged. "A beer suits me just fine." He replied. "Though I don't really have a big preference either way. What about you?" He asked, glancing over at Lincoln.
“Hm,” Lincoln pressed his lips together, his eyes squinting a little bit as he pondered the question. “I like plenty kinds,” he tapped his thumbs against his wrist. “But…I think I have to say I prefer red wine or Chardonnay. I like both equally.”
Jack nodded a little. "Mm. Those are good, I agree." he replied with a faint smile. "But…I don't know. I really don't have a huge preference."
Lincoln mirrored Jack’s nod, “I get that. I have a bit of a preference for Chardonnay and wine, but other than that they’re all the same to me,” he lightly chuckled. “Oh, I know we just had cookies at Graham’s house, but are you hungry for lunch?” He looked over.
Jack laughed a little. "I'll eat, if you've got good food." He replied with a smile. "Though again, I'm not very picky. It just has to be edible, and I'll take it."
