They're worried… I don't want them to be worried. Cas thought to himself as he shivered. Maybe if I act like I'm getting better…? He forced himself onto his hands and knees, trying to get up with an immense struggle.
They're worried… I don't want them to be worried. Cas thought to himself as he shivered. Maybe if I act like I'm getting better…? He forced himself onto his hands and knees, trying to get up with an immense struggle.
That only made Nick look more concerned. It took all he had to stop himself from running to Cas again. “Cas, what are you doing?”
"I'm… I-I'm fine…" He started coughing and almost collapsed again, but managed to stay up, however shaky he might've been. He forced himself up into a sitting position.
“No, you’re definitely not,” Nick refuted, turning Lydia anxiously.
She thought for a moment. “I do have some herbs that might help? They won’t hurt him, but they might not help him much, if at all.” Nick nodded. “Jack, get them,” Lydia commanded one of the pirates, who rushed off.
Cas found the mast and knelt beside it, gripping it tightly to keep himself up. "I'm fine, I'm fine…" He kept repeating over and over, to himself more than anyone else.
“No, you’re not,” Nick said, visibly upset. He ran a hand through his hair anxiously. “What’s taking him so long?” he muttered to himself.
Cas tried to drag himself to his feet, straining himself as hard as he could. After a minute or so of struggling, he just collapsed again.
Jack came back with a handful of herbs getting crushed in his meaty hands. “I got them, Lydia,” he sputtered.
“Hand them to Prince Nicolas,” Lydia instructed, and Jack did so.
“What’re we supposed to do with this?” Nick asked cluelessly, glancing at Cas.
“Eat them, maybe? Crush them up and rub it on his hands or face? I’m not an expert,” Lydia said, brows furrowed.
Cas was still barely conscious, but he'd exhausted himself and he couldn't really move. He looked over at Nick helplessly, ice climbing up the mast where he'd touched it.
After an indecisive moment, Nick just asked Cas. “What do you think we should do?” he asked.
"W-Well, usually magical herbs are used in potions and-" He collapsed into another coughing fit, the ice spreading further. "-and p-poultices, and some spells… I dunno what effects they-" More coughing. "W-What effects they have alone…"
“Maybe we could make a potion?” Nick asked, furrowing his brows. He glanced back at Lydia.
She narrowed her eyes. “I’m no healer. Pirates usually have a designated healer on board, but right now we’re running without one. The only one with any knowledge about this is Leo.”
Great, Nick thought sarcastically. Just then the trapdoor flew open and Leo walked out. Well, that was convenient. I guess he finally got some courage.
"N… N-Nice of you to show up…" Cas mumbled from the ground in Leo's direction.
“Uh-huh, Frosty,” Leo said sarcastically. “I head my services are needed? I think I can make some sort of poultice. I need that”—he plucked the herbs from Nick—“and some other stuff. I should be back in five minutes.” Then he was gone. I really hope this works, Nick thought.
Cas rolled his eyes at the nickname, but he was in no state to fight or anything, so he just stayed where he was on the ground.
Time seemed to slow down for Nick, every minute that Leo hadn’t returned seeming to last an eternity. Was Leo stalling on purpose? Did he want Cas to die? Cas wasn’t going to die, was he? Nick’s mind was racing with worry.
"N-Nick." Cas said, noticing the other's anxiety. "Calm down. I'm sure I'll be fine…"
Nick glanced at Cas, agitated. He didn’t believe that, but there was no way that he would do anything to make Cas feel bad in this state, so he clenched his jaw and nodded. He couldn’t wait until Leo came back.
Cas started coughing again, curling in tighter on himself. "I-I'm fine… f-fine… d… d-don't worry, love…"
Nick opened his mouth to reply when Leo emerged from the trapdoor once again. “I’m back,” he called, stating the obvious. “I have this poultice, which Prince Nicolas is going to apply because I am not getting near Prince Casper.” Leo quickly shoved a jar with the poultice in it into Nick’s hands. The latter made his way over to Cas.
Cas watched Nick approach nervously, coughing a bit more. "Where is he supposed to apply it to?" He asked.
“Wherever has the most ice,” Leo responded with a shrug as Nick drew closer. Nick cast a worried glance back at Leo, hoping that this would work.
Cas forced himself to sit up, using one arm to support himself and the other to hug his stomach. He looked up at Nick, seeming anxious.
Nick gave Cas a reassuring smile, though he was just as anxious as Cas was. He got closer to Cas, right beside him now. He could feel the chill again but pretended that everything was fine as he looked Cas over, trying to decide where to apply the poultice. He sat down next to the other boy.
Cas whimpered quietly and cowered a bit. He trusted Nick, of course, but he knew the other didn't have much experience in this area, so he was a little worried.
Nick stared blankly at Cas after taking some of the poultice out. “Um, how am I supposed to do this?” he asked, looking completely clueless.
"I'm… I-I'm not really sure…" Cas replied quietly, not reassured at all by Nick's cluelessness.
"Oh, um, okay then…" Nick mumbled. He took Cas's hands in his and tried to rub the poultice on them, unsure exactly how poultices worked in the first place.
It certainly felt weird, and Cas wasn't a fan, but he let Nick have his hands.
Nick gave Cas an uncertain smile. "Is it helping?" he asked, so badly wanting the answer to be yes but mostly sure that it would not be.
