The whole cliche of the hymen ripping and there being pain and blood and stuff isn't true. The hymen will stretch, but it shouldn't snap unless the penetration is going way too fast and hard (pun not intended).

Alright, so I don’t think anyone’s really asked this yet, but what can sexy scenes do for a story? What are some cases in which a fade to black wouldn’t do the job just as well? For one thing, I feel embarrassed writing that stuff, and for another, my story isn’t inherently supposed to be smutty or anything. There are just characters who happen to have sex with each other.

I think they can help add dimension to a relationship. Not a vital piece of dimension, but a somewhat realistic one. If you aren't comfortable writing them, don't! There's nothing wrong with leaving it out– I've read plenty of great OTPs who never have sex scenes. If it isn't a smutty story, I wouldn't suggest including smut shrug. I think most of the time you're okay with just a "fade to black." As long as it's made clear that the characters had sex, the point is made.

Hi. Hypothetically you've just started writing smut and now you hate everything you just wrote and want to metaphorically author die? But at the same time really like written erotica in healthy doses and want to experiment with sex and sexuality in the cultures of your current writing project and in the context of your story and character's lives?

Don't publish, but don't get rid of it. Writing is writing. Never delete, only move forward. Do research on what confused you, or maybe even ask others for help or advice or even feedback on what to do for that scene.
