”That’s right, they both are.” Abby smiled, ”Adar is just a little shy so play nice, ok.”
”But stranger danger still applies to other Aliens, unless someone you know tells you they're ok.” Peter cautioned, choosing his words carefully. He may not be the best with kids but he wanted to make sure they understood.
Most of the kids nodded. "But they knew you so it was OK!" One said.
Adar sat down, not knowing what else to do. The boy and the girl that were on his legs scrambled onto his lap, looking at his face.
Nyt chuckled. "Calm down Adar, their just curious." She said.
Abby chuckled a bit remembering what Nyt said about physical contact in their culture. ”Sorry, Adar. I probably should have warned you that humans are more touch-oriented. And kids are even more so than adults.”
Adar nodded. "I'm aware with that but I wasn't expecting it this much." He said looking between the two. They giggled at the touched his face. "Why are you so cold?" The little girl asked.
Nyt laughed her ears laying back as she did so, causing the kids to gasp. "Your ears move?" One kids asked, surprised.
Uh-oh ”Yes, their ears move. But don't touch them. It's a family-only thing.” Abby said calmly, trying not to panic since she knew how grabby little kids could get when something catches their interest.
Peter arched a brow at the excuse but didn't call Abby out on it.
The kids looked at Abby. "It is? Alright. But why do they move?" She asked.
Nyt looked at the kids. "They move so I can hear better!" She explained.
"Do you not have good hearing then?" She asked.
”Her hearing is actually better than ours because her ears can move. You know like a cat or dog can.” Abby gave a Nyt a slightly apologetic look, as that was the only explanation she could think of that the kids would understand.
The kids marveled at Nyt's ears but didn't touch them. "Why do you have purple eyes?" One kid asked.
"It's just one of out eye colors, just like yours could be blue or green." Nyt tried to explain.
”Alright, you guys. That's enough for today.” Toby smiled. ”I think I heard some of your parents calling for dinner.”
Peter chuckled, nudging Mark lightly, ”Those kids are asking harder questions than the council did.”
"Aww!" The kids wined but slowly got off of Nyt and Adar. "They'll come back, right?" One of the kids that was on Adar asked.
Nyt chuckled and stood up after they all got off her. "We should be able too." She said.
Abby nodded, ”Even if Peter acts as a messager, we’ll probably have to come back every once in a while. Not very often but occasionally.”
”You’d better come and visit me again, kiddo.” Toby laughed ruffling the girl's hair. ”You’re both welcome to visit too. Heck, if ya want, you can spend the night at me and Abby's place.”
Nyt looked up at the sky. It was getting dark. "Maybe that would be a good idea." She said. "But only if you're alright with it."
Adar looked at the woods. "How often do you get animal attacks?" He asked.
”Last attack we had was with that spider wolf that Caleb faced.” Peter said, half teasing.
Abby laughed. ”Uncle Toby is always ok with someone staying over, even if there isn't always enough room.” she shot her uncle a sidelong look before blushing lightly. ”I wouldn't mind if you stayed either.”
Nyt smiled. "I think it would be best for tonight. We'll be out of your hair tomorrow." She said as she brushed herself off.
Caleb grumbled at that. "That wasn't even in camp. That doesn't count." He mumbled.
Peter rolled his eyes briefly. ”Either way, I should get going too. Since I, technically, abandoned my post to get you guys into the camp, I'm probably going to have an early patrol to make up for it.” he waved, walking off.
”Good luck with that.” Abby smirked as a good night before following Toby back to their home. ”I hope you don't mind being stuck with me for a while. This whole thing wouldn't be possible without you, Nyt.”
Nyt wrapped on of her arms around Abby. "Why wouldn't I want to be stuck with you? You're the best person to be stuck with." She said with a smile.
Caleb waved Peter off. "Good luck!" He yelled chuckling.
Abby blushed with a light chuckle as she returned the gesture, ”There are a few people in the camp who would disagree with you on that but I'm glad you think so.”
”Caleb? Are you coming with? It be an honor to have all four ambassadors at my place.” Toby winked playfully.
Caleb looked back at Toby. ¨Sure! Its not like I have anywhere else to go.¨ He said before running to them.
¨I don´t see why anyone wouldn't want to be with you. You´re great!¨ Nyt said.
”Oh, come on. You remember what I was like when we first met. Not a lot of people liked me cause of my attitude. I am better now.” Abby admitted blushing darker. I’m better because of you… With you.
Nyt thought back on it. "You weren't that bad but I think that may of been because you were scared." She admitted. "And I think that I am better now as well."
"More than you know."
Abby nodded. ”I was at the time but now it seems silly to be scared of you.” she raised a brow, ”What do you mean? You were great when we met.”
”And so were you!” Nyt said, not really wanting to go into it. ”I´m not that scary!”
”At first you are!” Caleb chimed. ”You look scary!”
”You’re only scary to people who don't know you.” Abby intervened, gently taking Nyt’s hand. ”I don't think I can be scared by you anymore.”
Toby untied a rope that kept the tarp door they used on their small home. The whole house was about the size of Nyt’s living room with tents hanging open in two areas to separate the bedrooms. ”Sorry, it's a bit of a mess.”
Nyt looked around. "No! It's fine! Don't worry about it." She said as she stepped in. "And why not? I can be scary!" She said, laughing.
Caleb laughed. "Not anymore! Not after how you introduced yourself to me." He joked as he stepped inside the tent.
”It’s true. You’d have to try very hard to actually scare us now that we know how much of a sweet kitten you are.” Abby teased. ”You’d never hurt us.”
Toby raised a brow at his goddaughter’s choice of a nickname, but nodded. ”Besides, your eyes give you away. You don't have the eyes of someone who would hurt another for no reason. Neither of ya.”
Nyt raised an eyebrow. "You can tell that from my eyes? How?" She asked, confused, touching around her eyes. How could he know she was good by her eyes?
”It’s an old saying that I agree with, ’The eyes are the windows to the soul’. When Abby introduced us I noticed that you both are good people.” Toby explained.
”I guess I should have looked a little closer when you found me.” Abby muttered.
Nyt looked partially confused. "That's never something I thought about. How could you tell if I was a bad person?" She asked, curious.
Adar thought about how his eyes look. Did he look good? How?
Toby gave a small hum as he thought of how to explain. ”I think it has something to do with how you feel when you make eye contact. A gut instinct. Like if you look at the eyes of someone who is kind-hearted you’d feel safe inside, able to trust them. Whereas if you met someone with cold harsh eyes, you’d know to stay away from them.”
Nyt went silent as she thought about that.
Caleb chuckled. "Don't worry about it! Toby loves to say things that might not make sense to you." He explained. "Old human saying."
