Kyle leaned against Caleb, closing his eyes, “I was going to say relaxing.”
Kyle leaned against Caleb, closing his eyes, “I was going to say relaxing.”
“Same thing. Is it okay if I wash your hair?”
He nodded, "Go ahead."
Caleb started rubbing shampoo into Kyle’s hair, massaging his scalp. He hummed soothingly as he did so.
Kyle sighed contently, closing his eyes. He moved with Caleb's touches biting his bottom lip.
Caleb smiled. “Close your eyes. I don’t want to get shampoo in your face.”
Kyle hummed, doing as he was told and closing his eyes. It felt nice, almost like a head massage.
Caleb washed out Kyle’s hair before moving on to his own, still humming softly. “You’re good to open your eyes now.” He said. The hot water made Caleb’s scars more obvious, there were several that looked like they had been pretty serious injuries back in the day. And then of course there was his recent injury, which luckily seemed to be healing okay so far.
Kyle turned around. He reached up and lightly traced over Caleb's scars one by one, ever so soft. He hated seeing all the scars, knowing that his lover had probably been in immense amount of pain.
Caleb just let him, watching him with a little bit of sadness in his eyes, as if he was remembering the story behind each one when Kyle touched them.
“I’m sorry.” He said quietly, tracing one of the larger scars he’d found.
“What for?” he asked quietly, letting his eyes slide shut, and whatever tension left in his body disappeared.
“For the injuries you’ve had… I’m sorry you had to go through all that pain…”
“It’s something that I’ve just gotten used to with the job I guess. But I appreciate that someone cares.” He said sadly, leaning forward to rest his head on Kyle’s shoulder. “I’ve had way more near-death experiences than I’d care to admit..” he dropped his voice to a whisper. “Honestly I’ve been prepared for when I inevitably don’t come back alive. I’ve had a will written out for two years, just accepting that it would happen at some point. But now…with you, I don’t want to be that asshole that dies and leaves you alone with all that grief.” His voice cracked with emotion and he bit his lip before any more of those fears could be voiced. He didn’t want Kyle to worry. Didn’t want him to think there was even a need to worry.
Kyle wrapped his arms around Caleb’s middle, snuggling into him. He didn’t even want to think about that. That Caleb might not come back one day and he’d be all alone again, “I don’t want to think about that.”
“I-I’m sorry. I should’ve just not said anything…” he planted a kiss on top of Kyle’s wet hair. “You know how I can be, paranoid and stuff. There’s no reason for you to be worried.” He sighed quietly, hugging Kyle tightly. “I love you so damn much you know that right?” He whispered in Kyle’s ear.
"I always worry about you," Kyle mumbled, blushing lightly, "And I know. I love you so much more."
Caleb smiled and kissed Kyle’s cheek. “Don’t worry about me, okay? Everything’s going to be fine.”
Kyle sighed, not believing what Caleb was saying but he nodded, “Yeah.. okay.”
Caleb gently grabbed Kyle’s chin, tilting it so he could look Kyle in the eyes. “I’m not going to leave you alone, I promise. I’ll always be right by your side, and there’s no place I’d rather be.”
Kyle bit his lip, "P-Pinky promise?" He whimpered, holding up his little finger.
He nodded with a small smile, squeezing Kyle’s pinky with his own. “Pinky promise”
He wrapped his arms around Caleb again, hiding his face in his chest with a sigh.
Caleb’s smile widened a bit. “We should get out of the shower soon. Veronica will kill me if we use all the hot water. Which literally makes no sense because she could literally just heat up her own water but nooooo.” He chuckled a bit and kissed the top of Kyle’s head. “I’m sorry for making you worried.”
“It’s fine, I know you didn’t mean to.” Be mumbled. Kyle was always going to sorry about Caleb, that was a fact. Even if he didn’t mean to make him worried he probably always was so it didn’t make a difference.
Caleb pulled away and ig they’d finish up in the shower or whatever. But Caleb had retreated to a safe part of his mind. He thought there was a small chance that he could talk to Kyle about these things and that Kyle would understand. Instead Caleb made him worry more. Now more than ever he felt alone. This was now another thing to add onto the long list of things he couldn’t tell Kyle.
"Caleb? You know you can still talk to me, right?" Kyle asked quietly, fiddling with the ends of the sweater he'd put on once they had got out the shower, "I don't… I don't want you to think you have to.. to do this alone."
“Hm? Oh yeah of course.” He smiled at Kyle. Caleb was lying through his teeth. Even though it was minimal, the damage had been done. Caleb just put up another emotional wall, designed to keep everyone around him safe from what went on inside his mind.
Kyle didn't smile back. He could tell he was lying, but didn't call Caleb out on it. Instead he just nodded, "I want to go home…" He whispered.
“You know we can’t….it's not safe out there for you. We have to stay here.” He replied before walking out of the bathroom, making it obvious that it wasn’t something that he would even consider
