“Hey! Put me down, you oaf,” she laughed again, squirming in his arms. “My goodness, do you just have a thing for picking me up and carrying me?”
“Hey! Put me down, you oaf,” she laughed again, squirming in his arms. “My goodness, do you just have a thing for picking me up and carrying me?”
Arvil bumped their foreheads together, the smirk still on his features.
No, Daisy darling. I have a thing for you.
"Maybe," he chuckled, finally letting her feet touch the sand, but he didn't let her go yet. "I adore your reactions."
Daisy crinkled her nose, a small smile on her lips. Why did he have to be so cute sometimes?
“All right… My reactions like what?” she questioned, glancing around for a spot for their things with her hands resting on her hips.
“When you react like this,” he clarified, finding the crinkle of her nose beyond adorable. “I pick you up and you scream. I startle you, and you have the most adorable reactions ever.”
“I don’t scream,” Daisy protested with a shake of her head. “And it’s not adorable.
“Do you see anywhere we could sit? I want a good place.”
Arvil quirked an eyebrow at her and looked at her incredulously, but didn’t say anything.
His eyes flickered to a rather empty spot to their right, he jerked his head towards it.
“What about there?”
Daisy ignored the look he gave her. She was unsure of how to respond, anyway. Why did he even look at her like thatbin the first place?
“That looks good,” she agreed with a slow nod. She started walking toward it, nudging Arvil gently as she did so. “Are you going to swim, too? Or will you just sit in the sand?”
Arvil chuckled when she nudged him, but he didn’t comment on it. He merely followed her to where she was walking to.
“I’ll simply watch you,” he responded. “But maybe I’ll join if you want me to.”
Daisy scrunched up her nose and turned to face him before stopping.
“You should swim with me. It’ll be weird if I’m just there alone,” she said, looking up at him.
Arvil looked at her, trying to decide how to tell her he did not enjoy wearing wet clothes. Showering was good and all, but he didn’t like pools very much. He hated how wet clothes clung to his skin, even if it was just swimming trunks.
Still, she was right. Arvil sighed.
“If you say so, my lady,” he said, stuffing his hands back in his pockets. l will join you.”
“Great,” Daisy said with a grin. “Let’s get in the water, then.”
And with that, she was grabbing the hem of her coverup and tugging it over her head. Once it was off, she laid it on the ground to use as a towel to lay on.
When Daisy removed her coverup, Arvil froze. Shit. Why on earth would she choose to wear something like that?
Because she’s going to swim. This is a beach, dimwit.
Arvil blinked, staring at her for a few seconds, completely blank. His eyes trailed over her form before he forced them back to her face, keeping his expression completely neutral. He would not let her know her appearance was distracting.
“After you,” he said, turning his eyes to the water in the distance.
Daisy’s cheeks warmed as she saw Arvil’s gaze drift over her. Goodness, why did he do that? What was the big deal? She was just in a swimsuit…
“Of course,” she murmured, turning away from him and starting toward the water.
When she had her back to him, Arvil released a sigh and turned away, rubbing his face with his hand. Gosh, that woman… she had no idea at all, did she?
Finally, after he had calmed himself down considerably, after he was sure he would not pounce, he pulled his shirt over his head and spread it on the sand. He left his pants on. He was not taking that off, even if he hated his clothes when wet.
Daisy stopped at the edge of the water, smiling as waves washed over her feet. She turned back to Arvil, cocking her head to the side when she saw how far behind he was. And that he was still wearing pants.
“You’re going to wear pants to swim? You didn’t change into, like, swim shorts or something?” she questioned him with a curious look.
“I’m not much of a swimmer. I don’t really like my clothes wet,” Arvil explained with a shrug, running a hand through his hair. “I’ll honestly just end up sitting at the edge of the water. I know how to swim; I just don’t like ending up wearing wet clothes.”
“That’s why you bring an extra set of clothes, smart one,” Daisy teased him with a chuckle. “Seriously, do you never go swimming?”
Arvil gave her a pointed look, one eyebrow raised. Then a mischievous glint appeared in his. He walked over to her slowly, and without warning, threw her over his shoulder, gripping her tightly.
“Hold tight, darling,” he sang playfully and continued walking to the water.
“Arvil!” Daisy gasped as she was picked up. Her eyes were wide, mouth gaping open, as she stared down at— She cut her thoughts off right there, knowing it would just lead down a dangerous road, and laughed instead. “This is the second time you’ve done this today!”
Arvil ignored the fact that he was currently carrying his half-naked wife over his shoulders and was holding her bare legs. Nothing good would come out of that.
“Well, it’s as you said,” he started slowly, walking into the water. He gritted his teeth as his pants got wet—and the water was cold as well. When he was sure there wasn’t any chances of her getting hurt, he stopped. “But this is the first time I’m doing this.”
He dropped her in the water.
Daisy shrieked in shock as she was dropped into the water. She didn’t have time to take a breath, so she ended up inhaling a bit of water once she sank down a little. When she came back up, she coughed it out and glared at Arvil.
“Are you serious? Are you trying to drown me? Geez, it hasn’t even been a full day and you’re already trying to get rid of me,” she huffed indignantly, shaking her head. An idea popped into her mind a second later, and she grinned as she reached up and pulled him down by his pants into the water with her.
Arvil crossed his arms and smirked down at her. Splashes of water had hit him, too, but he didn’t care. Daisy was half submerged in water, and she was soaked, and he was enjoying that situation despite how it was making him feel.
Before he could respond, she was pulling him down, and he couldn’t regain his balance as he fell forward, right on top of Daisy.
Bad idea, bad idea, bad idea!
Daisy’s mind screamed at her as she realized Arvil was falling directly on top of her. She tried to back away, but she wasn’t quick enough. Arvil fell flat against her, sending them both underwater for a moment before she pushed herself back up. Her hands were pressed into the sand on either side of herself to keep from falling back and drowning.
And oh gosh, he was so close… He was pressed right up against her, their faces barely inches apart. That, plus having nearly drowned twice now, was enough to send her heart racing and cause her breathing to get heavier as she stared into his eyes.
Arvil’s eyes widened when both of them plunged into water. He quickly tried to regain his balance, and when she pressed her hands into the sand to keep herself from sinking again, he wrapped one arm around her waist, holding her to himself.
His eyes were still wide as he searched hers, the panic he had momentarily felt slowly dying out until he realized their position.
She was so close.
“Daisy…” he breathed, swallowing. He should pull away, but he wasn’t. He didn’t want to. That was twice in one day…
“Sorry,” Daisy breathed, her breath hitching as she felt his hand around her waist. “I wasn’t thinking…”
“Clearly not,” Arvil murmured, eyes falling over her face. He continued his exploration of her face, trying to search her eyes for something. Now that he was so close to her, he didn’t want to pull away.
“We seem to keep getting stuck like this,” Daisy murmured, her gaze flickering over his face as his did hers.
“I blame you again,” his voice was a breathless whisper, and he hadn’t realized just how close his face had gotten to hers.
“I’m not the one who was throwing his wife around,” Daisy whispered, shifting on her hands as she tried to keep herself up.
Arvil pulled her against himself a little more and pulled back until they weren’t practically laying in the water. But that movement had caused whatever little distance that was left between them to disappear.
“Then the wife shouldn’t test her husband…”
