Sophia grabbed her hand, pulling Lau into an alleyway. “Get down.”, she hissed.

Lau scowled. "What's going on?"

Sophia reached into her bag and pulled out a pistol. “They’re after me. You ran after me, so now they think you’re against Aleksai.”, she whispered.

"That's funny, because I am against Aleksai," Lau remarked, pulling out two daggers from her cloak. "Mostly."

“Good for you. Now keep quiet.”, she hissed, pressing her back against the wall as guards ran by.

Lau rolled her eyes. "Don't tell me what to do." She fell quiet anyway, tensing up as the guards flew past.

Sophia relaxed as the sound of footsteps faded, and she got to her feet, dusting herself off.

Lau blew an exasperated breath through her teeth. "Why did we have to hide? You and I could have taken 'em." She whisked her knives back into her cloak.

Sophia clenched and unclenched her fists. “I don’t kill. Also, I’d rather avoid confrontation.”

"Good for you," Lau said. "Sometimes you gotta kill people, Soph. It's just the way of things."

“Don’t call me Soph.”, Sophia growled, turning away. Only one person had the right to call her by any nickname, and he was dead.

"Don't be so hostile," Lau said, "or you'll never make friends." She smiled a sarcastic smile and continued to follow Sophia.

Sophia almost snapped back, but now that the imminent danger had passed, she felt herself slipping back into the quiet, shy Sophia she’d been ever since her Rakshan had died.
