Ivy turned a little, looking behind her. “The guards are blind,” she agreeed, talking slowly. “My father trained them. They’re very slow. My father was not good at his job. So the queen beheaded him, and offered me his place.” She smiled wickedly and held up a button. “I said no. My father was all I had left. But I could still help the queen.”

Without any hesitation, Curt expanded, covering the bomb and its blast with his body. He ignored the literally flaming pain he was experiencing, and yelled, “Everybody out! I can’t hold up the roof much longer.” Once he was positive that everyone (except Ivy) was away from the house, he shrunk down to about half the size of Alice, allowing himself to be cared for.

Catherine and Cameron disappeared. Like poof.

Alice hurried back into the ruins of the house to find Curt. “Curt!” She called. “Where are you?”

“In here,” Curt groaned.
