"Lindsey's most likely the one to get us out of touble." He smiled at her "I should be telling you the same." He teased
She rolled her eyes and smiled, “Shut up.” Goofing around and being a dork with him was fun, especially since she wouldn’t see him for a week because of him going to Maine.
"you are a ghost pepper. I'm not the wild one here Scar. You are." He booped her nose playfully
“That was real fun,” She argued playfully, smiling even more when he booped her nose, “It was on my bucket list too, so just shush Mr. can’t even handle ghost pepper on his lips.”
"no, no I can't. I'm never going to deny my little capability of tolerating spicy foods." He chuckled lightly
“At least you’re being truthful,” She said, propping her chin on his chest and looking at him with a growing smile, “So, whatcha wanna do?”
He sighed and wrapped his arms around her "no clue, it's too late to head out but I can't really sleep."
She thought for a moment before answering, “Well, we could watching a show or something, just lay here and do whatever, or I think I have a deck of cards somewhere if you wanted to play a game?”
He tilted his head, intrigued "what kind of card game?" He asked, shifting so he sat up
“I don’t really know,” She said with a shrug, scooting off of him as he sat up and laying back against the couch, “The only game I know how to play with cards is cribbage, so, if you’re willing to teach me and cribbage doesn’t sound fun, it’s up to you.”
Jasper smiled "teach me." He said, "it sounds like fun and I've never heard of cribbage."
She smiled and nodded, standing up to go find the cards, “I’ll be right back, the cards are around here somewhere.” It was clear she was excited to teach him how to play, even if she wasn’t the best at explaining. After a few minutes and several trips around her apartment, she came back with a deck of cards and a cribbage board in hand, setting them down on the couch between them as she sat down.
"It requires a board?" He stared down at the board with a tilt of his head "oh boy…this is gonna be fun. Is it like DnD? Cuz I have no clue how to play,,.."
Scarlett laughed slightly and shook her head, “No, it’s nothing like D&D, the board is only used for scoring.” She pointed to the four pegs, two blue and two green, and the corresponding holes in the board, outlined by the same color, “It’s how you keep track of your points throughout the game.” Opening the pack of cards, she started shuffling them as she thought of how to best explain it.
"ok, kinda looks like a Sorry board." He watched as she shuffled the cards "so what's the object of the game?"
(Here’s the rules cuz I stink at explaining XD https://bicyclecards.com/how-to-play/cribbage/ )
“The goal is to get 121 points, and I don’t really think it looks like a Sorry board, but sure,” She shrugged, dealing out six cards to each of them, “So, cards are worth a certain amount of points, face cards, the king, queen, and jack, are worth ten points along with the actual ten. All the other cards are worth their face value -nine is worth nine, so on so forth. The ace is worth one point. The goal of each hand is to try to first get 31 or fifteen points by laying down cards one at a time and taking the total, and then once all the cards are played, you add up points from pairs, runs, and many other things.”
Jasper watched and nodded, trying to follow along with what she was saying. "Ok, mind walking me through the first few rounds?" He asked, looking down at the cards
She smiled and nodded, “Sure.” Scarlett didn’t even bother hiding her cards this first round, laying them out and looking over them. “I’m your hand right now, you’re always looking for pairs, runs of three or more numbers, or cards that total to make fifteen. Once you go through your hand, you have to pick two cards to put in the ‘crib’ which switches between me and you every turn and is essentially extra points.”
In her hand of six cards was a 10, Jack, Queen, Ace, 8, and a 4. “So in my hand right now, I got lucky and have a run,” She motioned to the Q, J, and 10, “So I’m definitely not discarding those to your crib, since you have it first. A four plus an Ace is five and would help me make more points total, but I have to discard two, so this would I’ll get rid of the four and the eight.” She flipped the two cards over and slid them to start a small pile to his left, “Those two are now in your crib, and at the end of the round you’ll be able to possibly get more points from them.”
He nodded starting to understand a bit. He flipped his cards over to reveal a king, a 7 an ace, 5, queen, and a 2. "So I'd want to keep the higher numbers which are the king and queen. Is it ok if I trade in my ace and two?"
“An ace and two would be fine, but personally I’d get rid of the 7 and 2, keeping Aces is the next thing you should do if you don’t have any cards that go together.” She tapped his two cards and shrugged, “The choice is up to you though, maybe you’ll get lucky when we flip the top card and it’ll be a 6 so you get a run of 5,6,7.”
He did as she said and pulled out his 7 and 2, putting it in the crib next to hers. "Okay I think I'm starting to get this. So when we flipbthe card, if it's a number I don't really want, do I have to keep it or can I pass it to you?"
Scarlett laughed and shook her head, “You don’t pass the card at all.” She flipped he top card up and tapped it, a six showing, “This card is only for scoring.” Gently, she took her jack and laid it down, “Ten. Now you lay another card and add up the total it comes to. If you make fifteen you get a point, if there’s no possible way we can add more points without going over 31, the point goes to whoever laid the last card. If we get directly on 31 whoever laid the last card gets two points. You’ll catch on.”
"uhm, ok…" He put down his 5, glancing up at her to see if he was playing right "that makes 21?"
“Ten plus five is fifteen, one point for you.” She moved his first peg one spot on the board and pointed to the flipped up card again, “Don't pay attention to this card, at least not right now.” She put her queen down, “Twenty five.”
"what about the 6 underneath? That doesn't count?" He asked, slightly confused.
“The six is on top of the stack, see? It doesn’t count towards the total until we get to scoring.” She tapped the card again and motioned for him to go, “Remember, we have to stay under thirty one.”
He nodded still a bit confused "ok, under thirty one….." He put down his ace, not having any other number to put down that would leave the deck under 31."
Scarlett smiled, “So twenty six.” She popped her ace on top of the stack and smiled, “So since you don’t have any other cards that would go under thirty one, it’s called a go, and I get a point.” She moved her peg to match where his was and her smile grew, “Now we repeat with laying down cards again until we both run out or we get to thirty one.”
He nodded and pulled his queen out to start off with a ten.
“Twenty,” She counted, laying out her last card, a ten, “now that I’m out of cards, you lay your extras and you get another point because I can’t play any more cards.”
