Eden smiled back at him, taking another small bite of the salad.

“What’s your favorite book, Sterling?” she tilted her head to the side. “I don’t think I ever asked.”

Sterling blinked, having to think for a moment. “I liked the Wondla books. They’re science fiction. What about you?”

“I don’t think I’ve heard of those,” Eden hummed. “I’m fond of the Percy Jackson series. And the The Iron Fey.”

“I haven’t read the Percy Jackson books, and I don’t believe I’ve heard of the others. The Iron Fey books, you said?” Sterling mused, taking another bite of the salad.

“You haven’t read either?” Eden looked at him, surprised. “I don’t like the first set of books for the Iron Fey featuring Meghan, but I love the Call of The Forgotten. What about Six of Crows? Tell me you’ve read those.”

Sterling shook his head with a chuckle. “Nope. Sorry, beautiful. I guess you’ll have to educate me in the best books to read, won’t you?”

Eden stared at him wide-eyed. “Okay, wait. What about The Maze Runner? Magnus Chase and The Norse Gods? Ash Princess? The Da Vinci Code? Hunger Games? The Cruel Prince?”

“Wow, babe, slow down!” Sterling laughed, setting his fork down and reaching over to rest his hand on hers. “I’ve read The Maze Runner, the Hunger Games, and the Cruel Prince, but not the others.”

Eden blinked in disbelief. What? Those were the best books! How could he have not read them?

“What about The Darkest Minds?” she pressed again, completely discarding his first statement. “Gone With The Wind? Um— Are You Afraid of The Dark? Shadow Children?”

“Eden, babe, seriously. I haven’t read any of those,” Sterling chuckled, squeezing her hand. “You’ll just have to drop a case of books off at my house for me to catch up on, huh?”

“How can you—Sterling, those books are bestsellers!” Eden took a sip of her water to calm herself down. “I think by dating me, you’ll get caught up on a lot of books.”

Sterling couldn’t stop laughing softly, pressing his hand against his mouth to muffle the sound. “You’re so passionate about this, E. It’s adorable.”

Eden rolled her eyes, leaning back against her seat at his reaction. “Books and I go way back,” she replied, closing her eyes. “I can’t believe you haven’t read any of those…”

“I’m sure I’ll be reading them very soon, if my lovely girlfriend has anything to say about it,” Sterling said, taking another another bite of the salad.

“Damn right you will,” Eden muttered under her breath. “We’ve got ten minutes left, Sterling.”

Sterling glanced at his phone and muttered a curse. “Okay, I’ll get a box for the rest of this, and then we’ll go back to school,” he sighed, standing to grab a box.

“All right,” Eden murmured, watching as Sterling walked away to get a takeaway box. She really didn’t want to go back to school…

Sterling returned with a box a moment later and dumped the rest of the salad in it. When he was finished, he offered Eden his hand to help her stand.

“Ready?”

Eden took his hand, pulled herself to her feet, and linked their fingers together.

“Ready to leave? Yes,” she nodded, chewing on her bottom lip. “Ready to go back to school? Not really.”

“Sorry, beautiful, but we’ve got to. We can’t miss class again,” Sterling said softly, leading her out.

Eden sighed, running a hand through her hair. “Right. Of course,” she grumbled. “A con of dating you. I cannot skip.”

“Hey, if your records show that you don’t show up, the. You won’t get into a good college. You want to get into a good college, don’t you?” Sterling questioned, quirking a brow at her.

“I have good grades,” Eden muttered, slipping her hand out of Sterling’s hold to stretch. “What more do colleges even want?”

“They want to know if you’ll actually show up for your classes,” Sterling said with a shrug. “I don’t know, babe. I haven’t started to apply to them yet.”

“Do they even care?” Eden quirked an eyebrow. “I’ve… got some in mind. Colleges, I mean. I haven’t applied yet, though my dad tells me I should.”

“I have some in mind, too. What are some of the ones you liked?” Sterling asked as they reached the car. He unlocked it, then opened the door for her.

“Um, there’s KSU, University of Pennsylvania, University of Missouri,” Eden bit her bottom lip, smiling at Sterling and taking her seat.

Sterling hummed, nodding slowly. “I’ve been looking into law schools, and I think UCLA would be a good place. Of course, I’ll apply to other colleges, but that’s the one that I want the most.”

“UCLA,” Eden murmured to herself. They still had a few months until college and… that would mean they’d have to part ways, huh?

She didn’t let her conflict show on her features. Instead, she smiled gently at him. “That’s great,” she hummed. “UCLA is a good college. When’re you going to start applying?”

“Soon as I get my ACT scores back after I take the test,” Sterling said, casting a quick glance over at her. “What about you? When will you start applying?”
