Okay im in 8th grade but technically supposed to be in 9th….I was too young for the age cutoff.

If you were too young then you are technically an 8th grader, not a Freshman.

Too young for High School, too young for smut

I'm ninth grade age, my school doesn't allow me to be in 9th because my birthday is september 10th…the cutoff is the 8th.

Ninth grade age is people in 9th grade…my friend could be in 10th but missed the cutoff, but he's not considered 10th grade age.

I would’ve never posted what I wrote, though. I was just writing it for practice because I knew if I was going to write an adult book when I was older, I needed to practice that alone with other writing styles. Posting it would’ve been inappropriate.

Exactly. A high schooler or maybe a late middle schooler writing smut as practice is fine, but posting it is weird and gross, not to mention fuels potentially harmful stereotypes, for lack of a better word, about sex.

Yeah, you can write sexual scenes about YA characters in your stories, but putting anything above a fade-to-black and maybe some very vague emotional sex is crossing a line. Not to mention that writing graphic sex between teenagers is disgusting and borderline pedophilic.
Which is why we need to resurrect NA

And not even just for Sexy Times, but for those books where the MC doesn't fit into the YA or A catagories/have an ensemble cast with a lot of different ages.
My main story has POV characters ranging from 16-26, one has POVs from 15-21, one from 16-late 30s/early 40s, one has 16-200+, one has 22-28, and then the other two have strictly teen POVs.
So agewise they're not YA, but contentwise they aren't adult.

And most popular authors these days are not YA either. SJM? NA for sure. Leigh Bardugo? NA.
Even Hunger Games would really be considered NA with all the violence and death.

Yeah. I feel like the Grisha trilogy is YA, Six of Crows is right on the line, and KoS is probably NA, but only because the prince of my heart Nikolai, Genya, Tamar, Tolya, Nadia, Zoya, David, etc. are all 18+. I think Nikolai might even be in his early 20s?
SJM is definitely NA because of the sexy times and the ages, most of the MCs are 18 at the youngest.
Fangirl should be NA because Cath is in college.
ADSOM is another series that's supposed to be right on the line between YA and A.
Cassie Clare's latest book apparently has the Sexy Times, so NA.

Because YA is a woman-dominated genre/age category and so even when books are just as good as adult ones, they aren't considered as such by the general public since adult (or at least 'respected' adult) tends to be man-dominated. Nevermind that a teenage girl invented the sci-fi genre…..
