Adrik woke up, the sun shining through his window right onto his face. Standing up he shook the sleep from his tired bones, quickly dropping to the floor to start his daily exercise before going down to the docs and working more. He looked up, hearing the quiet thumps of clumsy feet walking into the tiny living room.
"Daddy!" Felix yelled, climbing onto his back as he went up, and then down, holding it long enough for the child to slide off, pushing himself up into a standing position, stretching his arms above his head and then grabbing Felix's hand, walking him into the kitchen.
"Morning Nonna," He said, flashing his charming smile to his grandmother, already knowing what was on her mind. Today was the day of the reaping, after this one was just one more and Adrik would be free, free from the blood thirsty eyes of President Snow and his followers, using the people of the districts in their sick game. Adrik pushed the thought to the back of his head, placing Felix on a wooden chair at the table, ruffling his hair as he was served the plate of cut up fish and three apple slices. Sitting down, Adrik decided to explain what was going to happen today.
"Hey buddy, today isn't going to be like any other day," He started out, thanking his grandmother when she had set both of their plates on the table, "Daddy has to go into town today, and there is a chance he is going to go away for a while okay?" He asked, his Nonna took hold of his hand under the table. She hated the games with a burning passion, her fiance- and Adrik's grandfather, was a tribute in the games when he was eighteen, although he never made it back to help take care of his newborn daughter.
"I'll go get dressed." He decided, picking up his plate and shoveling the last few bites of fish onto Felix's plate, his brown eyes practically begging for more.
