Amber sighed and rolled her eyes. “Not getting sick, smart one. The shirt. Having the shirt would be nice,” she said, almost irritably.
Amber sighed and rolled her eyes. “Not getting sick, smart one. The shirt. Having the shirt would be nice,” she said, almost irritably.
William snorted.
“Right, come on, then,” he shook his head, stuffing his hands in his jeans pockets. “My locker’s that way.”
“Sure,” Amber hummed, nodding once. She hugged the jacket closer around herself, shivering a little in the cold.
William noticed her shivering and bit down on his lip. Why did he feel the sudden urge to hug her to give her warmth? He shook his head. He was going crazy.
Once they reached his locker, he unlocked it and took out a warm, brown shirt. He held it out to Amber.
“Keep the jacket as well,” he murmured. “The shirt’ll be too big on you, and the jacket would help cover up more.”
“Oh, sure. Um… Well, uh, thanks,” Amber murmured as she took the shirt from him, hiding it tightly in her fist. “Closest bathroom?”
“It’s across the hall,” William muttered. “The girl’s bathroom. You could also use the women’s basketball locker room. They wouldn’t mind if you did.”
“Okay. I’m guessing the locker room is closer?” Amber assumed, cocking her head in question.
William nodded in reply, pointing to the door to the right across from them.
“That one,” he muttered.
“Cool. Thanks,” Amber sighed, shivering again as she started toward the room. She paused when she reached the door, shaking her head as if dismissing a thought, then stepped inside.
William leaned against his locker, sighing when Amber finally stepped inside the girl’s dressing room. He closed his eyes, gently massaging his aching head.
What was going on with him? He’d be lying if he said it was because of Amber that he didn’t blow up, but what was the reason for that wave of anger? Over something as someone spilling water on Amber on purpose? What was wrong with him? He groaned, shaking his head. This was stupid. Utterly ridiculous, and he couldn’t keep thinking about it.
When Amber stepped into the locker room, she sighed and rubbed her face. What was she doing? She was about to be wearing William’s shirt, and she was already wearing his jacket… If she continued to wear his jacket, people would start thinking things bag weren’t true, such as them being together…
After she finished changing, she pulled the jacket back on, shaking her head at herself. She stepped back out of the locker room and glanced around for William, then found him leaning against his locker. Making her way over to him, she nodded once in greeting.
“Thanks,” she murmured again.
“Thanks,” Amber’s soft voice brought him out of his thoughts. Thanks. If they hadn’t stopped what they’d been doing, that would have been said through a kiss. Now, they were just words, and even the mere words made him want to kiss her again. He really was going insane, acting like an idiot.
He lifted his head up and fought back both a flustered look as well as a snort. When he said big, he didn’t think it would be that big. Thanks to the jacket she was wearing, she was covered properly. Though that was large on her, too, it covered her shoulders properly. William let a sigh escape his lips, casting his gaze down.
“You’re welcome,” he muttered. He pushed himself off of the locker and stuffed his hands back in his pockets, something that had become a habit. “If anyone asks, it’s not mine.”
Amber raised her eyebrows at him, her arms tightly wrapped around her stomach. “William… You’ve worn it around all winter. People will probably know it’s yours anyway.”
William snorted, shaking his head.
“As if I’m the only one around with that,” he rubbed his forehead again, eyes shut. “What they think or don’t think doesn’t matter to me, so you can say whatever.”
“Mm, sure. I’ll just say I stole it from you and you have no idea I have it,” Amber chuckled a little with a shrug.
I stared at her when she chuckled—I want to hear it again, but I didn’t know why. When I realized I was staring, I looked away, feigning nonchalance.
“Well, you’re pretty bold for stealing my jacket, Blue,” I let a smile make its way on my lips.
Amber’s lips slowly twisted up into a smile. “I know, right? I blamed it on Jace when you noticed it was missing.”
William tilted his head to the side, the smile on his face softening without his knowledge when he noticed the one she wore.
“I ended up scarring him emotionally for eternity,” he hummed in amusement.
Amber laughed once, short and loud, before clapping a hand over her mouth. She coughed a couple of times, trying to cover it.
William blinked at Amber, her laughter ringing in his ears. The smile on his face dissolved before it appeared again, this time in amusement.
“I’m not Professor Morbid Grimsby, you know,” he quirked an eyebrow. “You can laugh in front of me.”
Amber scrunched her nose up at him, moving her hand from her mouth. “Sure you’re not. And I’m the Queen of Atlantis,” she teased.
William let out a chuckle this time, amusement present on his features.
“Ah, well, I suppose you’d better run away from me now, huh?” He forced a fierce expression on his features. “I’ll take away laughter from this world, and I’ll be starting with yours.”
Amber’s smile widened slightly at his joking. Had she ever heard him joke? If she had, she couldn’t remember it.
“All right, I should actually be going back to the dorm. I would like to maybe change into my own clothes,” she said, taking a step toward the exit. “I’ll see you later, okay?”
William dropped the smile from his face, gaining control over himself. So what if she had smiled or laughed? What was it to him? He couldn’t believe himself. Why was it that he liked it when she smiled like that?
“Yeah,” he nodded in agreement after realizing he hadn’t answered. “You should. I’ll be back a little later, but if anything goes wrong, call me.”
“Oh, sure. Yeah, I’ll, uh— I’ll do that,” Amber agreed, the smile falling from her face when she noticed his sudden serious expression. A look of disappointment flashed across her features before she controlled it and twisted her face back into its blank, calm look. “I’ll see you later.”
If William thought he was confused before, he was wrong. The flash of disappointment that Amber hid was what confused him more. What was she so disappointed about? Why did the smile drop from her face?
William took a few steps closer to her before he looked down, reaching out to zip up the jacket. He had been trying hard not to notice it, but he failed. His shirt was too loose on her, and even the jacket couldn’t do anything about it. Once he was done, he pulled the hood over her head and stepped back, nodding in satisfaction.
“See you later, Blue.”
Amber stared up at William as he zipped up the jacket, her gaze flickering across his face. Gosh, why did he have to be so dang attractive? She clenched her jaw slightly as her eyes passed over his lips, but she didn’t move to kiss him. They’d agreed not to do that anymore, and she was determined to hold up her end of that promise.
She took a step back from him when he’d finished, tearing her gaze from his face. With a sigh, she nodded once in acknowledgement of his words, then turned and started to walk away.
What in thw world was going on with her?
“Blue,” William called before she walked away, his hands back in his pockets. For some reason, he felt the need to say this. “Your smile.”
Amber froze at the sound of her nickname coming from his mouth, being called toward her even as she walked away.
“Your smile.”
She frowned slightly, her brows drawing together in confusion. Turning around, that was the look William would see on her face.
“What about my smile?”
William looked at her intently, cocking his head to the side, enjoying the look of confusion on her face.
“Savannah asked me what I found attractive about you,” he started, his expression serious. “I chose you out of a whim, but I know now. It’s your smile. See you, Blue.”
He dipped his head in a nod before he turned around to walk away.
