Joe gritted his teeth. “Fine. Yes. I’m sorry. But if he ever makes you cry again I won’t hesitate to beat him black and blue.”
Joe gritted his teeth. “Fine. Yes. I’m sorry. But if he ever makes you cry again I won’t hesitate to beat him black and blue.”
I subtly scooted a little closer to Marina, taking a long sip of my water afterwards. I felt awful for upsetting her, but hopefully things would get better from here… or she would just never talk to me again after I got sober.
I nodded slowly, and Joe sighed. “Drink up. I’ll make you two dinner. Don’t make too much noise.”
I nodded, waiting impatiently for Joe to leave.
With one last searching look, he turned and slipped from the room. My shoulders sagged.
I sighed in relief. “He’s scary.” I mumbled, scratching my arm with my spare hand.
“He’s just overprotective..” I murmured softly. “And has anger issues.”
“What were you saying? Before Joe came in?” I asked quietly, trying to lighten the conversation.
My brows drew together.
"What were we talking about? I can't remember."
I tried to recall the memory, but my intoxicated brain failed to bring it up. “I uh… I don’t know, you were saying something.”
"Drink your water," I murmured softly instead, nudging his glass up to his mouth. "It'll help with your… drunkenness."
“My drunkenness.” I tried not to laugh, instead sipping quietly on my water. “Whatever you say, Pazza.”
I offered a wobbly smile in return. "Whatever I say?"
“Whatever you say.” I affirmed, using one hand to tentatively pat her on the head. “Pretty sure we both agreed on the whatever you say from now on when you shoved me through your friend’s window.”
"That's a good point," I chucked quietly, leaning into the touch.
“Hey, uh… Pazza? We…. We aren’t lovestruck, right? Like how Joe was saying? We would know if we were…?” I trailed off, staring out the window we climbed through.
My smile faltered. I looked away, swallowing. "I don't know, are we? Are you?"
“I dunno.” I offered up a helpless shrug. “You’re the smart and sober one.”
"Sober, maybe," I murmured, "Smart? I wouldn't be here if I was smart."
“Fair enough.” I smiled sadly. “I— I don’t think I know what it means to be lovesick. Or in love. I really like you though. Even though I think I’m losing my mind a bit cause of you.”
A thought occurred to me, and my entire body went rigid. No, no. Don't think about that…
I swallowed. "Oh."
I noticed the sudden change in Marina’s posture and felt dread immediately pool in my stomach. “Sorry—I um… I didn’t mean to… did I?” I wasn’t sure how to phrase it. “I shouldn’t have said that.” I mumbled, staring at the floor.
I shook my head quickly. "No, no. You didn't say anything like that." This time. The memories of their texting conversation were fresh in her mind. Particularly the thing he'd said about dating…
“Can I ask you a question? It’s a good one, I swear.” I took another sip of water, giving Marina a shaky smile.
"Go ahead," I murmured, eyes flickering away. "Ask away, Mercutio."
“How in god’s name is your lip gloss still shiny?” I asked, exaggerating how baffled I was.
I nearly spat out my water, struggling to hold in peals of laughter. "I thought you were about to ask something serious!" Barely managing to keep my voice low, I shook my head in amusement. "I have no idea."
“That was serious!” I whispered back, smiling brightly. “I think I’d look great in lipgloss.” I added absentmindedly, flopping on my back onto Joe’s bed.
I stifled another laugh. A blush rose to my cheeks, a thought rising to mind. "Well… you could always just…"
I attempted to drink the last of my water lying down and ended up sputtering and coughing. “I could what?” I asked in between coughs, whining a bit in annoyance.
