"Yes, well, I would if Tessie was here so I could make her help me make breakfast, but she's not so you're volunteering."
"Yes, well, I would if Tessie was here so I could make her help me make breakfast, but she's not so you're volunteering."
"She's what?" he exclaimed, getting out of bed and walking to the door.
Zeus opened to door, leaning against the frame with a raised brow. "She's not here?"
"And where would she be?"
"New York. She's on her way back." He was utterly unconcerned. He eyed Runner up and down. "I suppose that will have to do until you get some new clothes today. Come on." He grabbed Runner's arm and dragged him downstairs.
"You're crazy if you think I'm about to make you breakfast."
"Not just me," Zeus said, still dragging Runner.
"I lived on the streets for 8 years, I don't know how to cook."
"Neither does Tessie. If I can teach you to cook, she'd have her mind blown and probably follow you around like a hungry pup."
"Can you please let go of my arm and let me go back to sleep?"
"Nope." Zeus brought Runner into the kitchen and pulled out a cooking flat iron, plugging it into the wall as he set it on the counter. "Baking powder and salt are in one of those cupboards," he pointed to a row of cupboards. "I'm assuming you know where the milk, eggs, and butter are."
"No. I don't. I've been here a total of 3 days."
"Fridge." Zeus dug around for measuring cups.
He groaned, walking over to the fridge ad gathering the items up. "This is against my will."
"I don't see anybody hovering over you with a chain and whip." Zeus found the measuring cups and held a hand over the griddle. Not hot enough yet.
He rolled his eyes. "What now?"
"Get a bowl from up there." He pointed to another cupboard. "Then measure out the ingredients. 3 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 1/4 cups of milk, 1 egg, and 3 tablespoons of melted butter. Once you done that, mix 'em together int he bowl. Dry ingredients before wet ingredients."
He looked at Zeus like he had just spoken French.
"Get a bowl," Zeus said slowly.
He scowled, but grabbed a bowl from the cubboard he had pointed to before.
Zeus measured out the ingredients and handed them one by one to Runner for him to dump in the bowl. "Can you crack an egg at least?"
"Probably." He gently opened the carton and pulled one out. After a few quick taps, he split the egg open with his thumbs. It wasn't perfect, but there was no shell in the bowl.
Zeus nodded approvingly. "Mix the ingredients together in the bowl until the mixture is smooth."
He grabbed a wisk and began running it through the mixture, just aggressive enough to actually mix iwthout splashing it all over his clothes.
"The fact that you are doing as I say means you don't despise it as much as you want me to believe." Zeus said, leaning against the counter and watching Runner.
"Any other time I would've walked back upstairs. But if it'll make Tess happy, I'll do it."
Zeus smiled knowingly. "Figured that would get you moving. That's enough." He reached for the bowl.
He stopped whisking and pulled back, giving him space to grab the bowl.
Zeus took the bowl and poured some on the flat iron, eyeballing the amount. "So. You and my sister, huh?"
"Yeah. Although she doesn't want to admit it to you."
