Altair nodded, looking as if he was taking in the information. “And what about you, Prince Colton?”

I fought back a sigh. I never really talked about my main ability, mostly because of its nature. Once I had it under control, I used it when there was no one to witness it.

“The abilities I gained from my bondmate are Wind and Fire manipulation,” I paused. “I have different color flames, each different variations of temperatures.” Here, I stopped talking, but Altair continued to stare at me expectantly.

“And what of your main ability?” He inquired, tilting his head. “I’ve heard it was rather difficult to control for you. Perhaps if I could get a bit insight on it…?”

I cast a quick look towards the professor before finally answering.

“It’s called Supernova,” I said reluctantly. “It’s a difficult ability to both understand and control. Though it doesn’t affect me personally, it can, in simpler terms, cause someone or something to burn from inside out.”

@blue_topaz

I blinked up at Colton—why had he not told me this before? Why keep something this big hidden from me? But I remained silent, hyper-aware of the professor's presence.

Altair nodded, though now he looked a bit amused.

“Did you know that the ability you both have, ironically, belonged to the first bondmate couple?” His eyes crinkled with amusement. “Yours, Elliot, was the ability of a man. The Prince, on the other hand… yours was a woman’s.”

I tried hard not to shoot a smirk towards Elle, but then it didn’t become so hard.

“But alas, the couple ended up destroying each other,” Altair shook his solemnly. “Alexis grew insane due to her growing powers. They ended up killing each other, both due to the pride and growing craze.”

I tried not to pale. Altair’s words rang deep in my head. If this was true… would I end up hurting Elle, too? Me, and not the creature inside of me?

“Anyway, I’m going to create an illusion. I don’t think either of you have gone through this before, right?” He continued as if he hadn’t told us something so dire. “The first thing I want you both to accomplish is fighting your fear. I won’t be able to see your fears, so that’s a good thing for you, right?”

@blue_topaz

The blood drained from my face.

No. It's fine. Just a story. History will not repeat itself. It might not even be completely accurate.

I barely managed a nod, exhaling slowly as my head spun. The glass of water on the professor's desk wobbled dangerously. "Yes, sir."

Altair stepped forward and rested his hands on the top of our heads.

“I’m going to send you off, then,” he said quietly. “Good luck, both of you.”

And then everything went dark.

When I opened my eyes, everything was in flames. Not a single thing remained untouched. I rapidly blinked my eyes, the rising smoke burning. I always knew illusions gave a real effect, but I never thought it would be this real… I covered my nose with my shirt, trying not inhale the toxic chemicals.

I couldn’t be afraid of the world burning, could I? That was silly. What was the point of this illusion? Was this really my fear, or was this what Altair thought I feared?

I realized I thought too soon, because the next thing I saw was a woman shrouded in darkness, and despite the intense heat, her coldness nipped at my heart. I could recognize her anywhere, even though I knew nothing of what she looked like. I could not see her face, could not see what she looked like—just a simple shadow in the shape of a female. It was still enough to root my feet to the ground.

The shadow grinned darkly at me and stepped aside. There stood Elle, rapier in hand, standing incredibly still. Blood stained her clothes, her cheeks. Soot and ash covered her from head to toe, but that wasn’t what caused my blood to freeze. It was her eyes. Pure red—both the pupil and the whites, a sickening look to them. There was a grin on her face that spoke of insanity, her eyes wide not with fear but with exhilaration.

My fear was not the world dying in flames. It was not the woman controlling me, driving me insane.

It was the thought of me being too late to save my girlfriend—to have her turn into a mindless puppet. My greatest fear was losing my future queen.

@blue_topaz

My eyes flew open.

Glowing flames roared around me, painting the world in horribly vibrant hues of red and orange. I stood in the middle of a hellscape, my body wrapped in thick chains. It took me a moment to recover from my shock at how real the illusion appeared to be, but once I did, I registered the wooden pole and my back. I was tied to a stake, fire ravaging the world around me.

And I was not alone.

Colton stood beside me, similarly bound. I cried out, opened my mouth to speak to him—–and stopped dead. His eyes were pure black, his beautiful face cold and devoid of emotion.

"No!" I screamed, struggling against my bonds, but he only smiled.

At first, I remained frozen, even when Elle walked closer, raising her rapier. Suddenly, I forgot it was an illusion. A cloud wrapped around my brain, preventing me from escaping. From realizing what was truly going on.

“E…Elle…?” I called out to her, voice shaking. She didn’t respond. Merely brought her weapon down, and that was when I reacted. I rolled out of the way just as her rapier slammed into the ground, the very spot I stood in.

Elle’s bloodshed eyes turned back towards me as she slowly pulled her sword out. I took a step back, unable to fight. I couldn’t fight her. She was the love of my life.

“Elle, come on,” I tried urging her through my fear. “Snap out of it. Don’t let her control you. We promised a future together, didn’t we?”

She responded by a slash of her rapier, and this time I was too late to respond. Her blade came out soaked in red.

@blue_topaz

A dark figure, nothing more than a silhouette, emerged from the wall of flames. I stared at it, trying to make details out, when all of a sudden, a blinding white flare illuminated its features.

The King.

A cry tore itself loose from my throat, but he only advanced, unsheathing his sword.

“Your Majesty!” I yelled desperately, struggling against the ropes that held me. “Your son—he—“

The King’s eyes darkened. “He’s no longer my son.”

I stared at Elle with shock, pain flooding me. It wasn’t the wound that hurt. It wasn’t the fact that I was unable to protect myself. It was because Elle, sweet, loving Elle was forced to fight—to shed blood. It wasn’t right. My Elle wasn’t born to kill. She wasn’t born to be controlled, to have her hands stained crimson with blood. That was me. It was my duty to wash in red.

“Elle…” I winced in pain, gasp as I fell to my knee, blood soaking my side. It hurt. The wound burned, throbbing painfully as if someone sprinkled salt on it. Flames licked at me, revolving around Elle as if she was their ruler. But one good look at them made me realize Elle wasn’t being protected by them. She, too, was engulfed in flames, but she was too consumed by the dark magic to notice the flames eating away at her flesh. “Elle—Elle, please. Snap out of it.”

My words did not help at all. Elle continued to make her way towards me, her grin widening as insanity took over her further. I knew I had to protect myself, but that would mean harming Elle. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I couldn’t bring myself to hurt her.

So when her blade came down the third time, I ran towards it, letting it pierce my flesh as I wrapped my arms around her and pressed my lips to hers. Even though they were covered in ash, even though blood stained her soft lips, they still tasted like honey to me.

I snapped my eyes open with a gasp, falling to my knees as I clutched my chest, heaving painfully. Everything came flooding back. It wasn’t real. It was just an illusion. I tried getting back my bearings, but Elle just kept ringing in my head. I looked to my side, seeing her frozen there, eyes blank, dazed.

“You’re back quicker than I thought,” Altair’s voice interrupted my panic. “Here, Your Highness, have some water…”

@blue_topaz

”Get back!” Song burst from my mouth, clogging the smog-choked air. The King went flying backwards. The sword slipped from his hand. ”Untie us.” He rose again, jerkily, like a marionette, a horrified look in his eyes as he stripped us of our bindings.

I stumbled forward, taking Colton by the shoulders, but he shoved my back and into the wall of flames. Pain exploded through my body, blowing every single coherent thought in my head to smithereens. I somehow managed to stagger forwards, back to Colton, but when I raised my head to release a quiet whimper, he was holding the King’s fallen sword.

“N-No—“ I protested, holding my hands up. “Colton—It’s me—“

But, instead of running me through, he pressed the sword into my hand. The blank, emotionless expression on his perfect features utterly broke me. Moving as if controlled by machinery, Colton placed his hands on my waist and pulled me to him in a cold kiss that sent panic and terror racing through me, accompanied by something far more sinister. An invasive force—dark magic. It flooded my system, overtook my body. I struggled desperately against it, but it was unstoppable, seeping through my limbs. To my shock and horror, my arms moved of their own accord and lifted the weapon.

“Say goodbye…” Colton whispered, his eyes flickering back to their regular, blessed hazel.

I choked out a sob, called his name——and my sword ran him through.

A scream tore from my lips just as reality came crashing back. I clapped my hand over my mouth as soon as my eyes met Colton’s, my body trembling violently as I stumbled backwards.

Elle’s scream snapped me out of my shock. Had we been alone, I would have wrapped her in my arms and kissed her until she was all right. But we weren’t. I couldn’t hold her and kiss all our fears out. I couldn’t do anything other than give her a breathless look.

Altair handed Elle a glass of water, too, confusion present on his features.

“Now, sit down,” he said softly, eyes looking over at us gently. He had guilt dancing in his eyes, as if he didn’t want us going through what we just went through. “Tell me, what was it that brought you out of the illusion?”

I swallowed the water, the cold liquid soothing my dry throat. I cleared my throat, trying not to let my voice shake.

“I… let myself be killed than hurt a person I cared about,” I found myself speaking. “Without hesitation.”

@blue_topaz

The glass shattered the moment it touched my hand, water spraying across the floor at my feet. “S-Sorry,” I stammered and dropped to my knees. Colton’s words rang in my ears as I frantically scooped the shards into a pile, turning my blood to ice. Someone I cared about…

“Mine—Mine was the opposite,” I whispered after a pause. “I was forced to kill someone I loved.”

Deleted user

Altair froze, panic flashing across his features before he shook his head.

“This can’t be possible…” he murmured, reaching out to rub his forehead. “You two must never let anyone know of this. I’m afraid what you went through is far more than what I think it is. If you anyone know… even the King, your lives could be in danger. Do you understand me?”

@blue_topaz

My head snapped up. The blood drained from my face, leaving me a pale, trembling wreck. I battled my emotions, pushing all the water around me back, trying desperately to control my power before the pipes burst.

“What are you talking about?”

Deleted user

I panted heavily, Elle’s panic filling me. I could practically feel her emotions coursing through me, and though it was getting suffocating, I was pleased. It let me know how she was feeling.

“I can’t say exactly…” Altair mumbled. “But I think whatever’s happening recently, with the deaths… I think you two might be the catalysts… it’s jusr my hunch—I don’t want to worry you both, but if you ever see someone suspicious… if anything happens to either of you, you must tell me. I’ll do anything and everything to help.”

@blue_topaz

“Sir, please explain.” The quiet plea came out as a mortifying half whimper. I bowed my head, gripping the fractured pieces of glass so tightly that my palms began to bleed. “What’s happening to us?”

Deleted user

I reached out for Elle’s hands, gently opening her fist to take away the piece of shard. I no longer cared about what’s Altair thought. I couldn’t let her hurt herself.

Altair sighed, shaking his head. “I’m not sure,” he answered softly. “There’s nothing wrong yet, but I think it won’t be long before something does happen.”

I quirked an eyebrow.

“What do you mean by that?” I inquired, trying to keep the panic out of my voice.

“I think whoever is behind the casting of dark magic needs someone strong,” he started slowly. “Type A’s. That’s why I came here in the first place—to protect you both from it. But it seems your fears have shown me that the enemy might be closer than I originally thought.”

He was right. I’d already been contaminated, but he didn’t know that. He was in the right track.

@blue_topaz

I tightened my fists around the remaining glass shards, reducing my soft palms to a bloody pulp. But I didn’t care; the pain helped focus my raging emotions, kept the walls from crumbling onwards from the sheer force of the water within them.

Scylla materialized beside me, but I barely noticed her presence as I rose to my feet. “And—And the fears? You believe that—that they’ll come true?”

Deleted user

Altair bit his lower lip and I hoped he would say no. If Elle had to kill someone she loved… it would destroy her.

“You can always change the future,” he replied softly, worry on his features as he noticed Elle’s hand. “It’s never fixed. If we work hard, we can prevent it. You won’t kill the one you love and the Prince won’t sacrifice himself to protect the one he cares about.”

@blue_topaz

I nodded weakly, suddenly realizing how pathetic I must’ve seemed to the both of them. “I-I’m sorry. The thought of—The thought of doing that had me a bit shaken.”

Deleted user

Altair reached out towards Elle and I tensed, ready to strike if need be. But he patted Elliot on the head lovingly, as if he were a big brother.

“Fear does not make you weak,” he said softly. “You are weak if you don’t fear. The only thing that matters is if you let your fear control you.”

@blue_topaz

Ha, I thought bitterly, If only you knew.

But I only nodded and lowered my eyes, not daring to look at Colton lest I fell apart in front of the both of them. I still remembered the unforgettable squelch of my sword against flesh, the spurt of blood….

Deleted user

“Both of you, rest,” he told us. “You deserve it.”

I nodded, thanked him and looked at Elle, a silent indication that she should follow me out.

@blue_topaz

I shook my head numbly, gesturing towards the water and glass at my feet. “I’ll stay behind to clean up my mess, if that’s alright. Do you keep a broom in here, sir?”

Deleted user

Altair shook his head.

“That’s quite all right,” he told her. “Go on. You don’t have to worry about the mess.”

@blue_topaz

I hesitated for a brief second, but nodded, barely aware of Scylla’s presence on my shoulder. “Thank you, sir,” I murmured quietly before turning to follow Colton, still gripping the glass in my closed fists.

The second we were out of the room, I grabbed Elle’s arm and dragged her off to my room. To others, it might have seemed like Elle was in trouble. To me, it was worry.

Once we were inside safely, I took her to the bathroom, uncurled her fingers and washed the blood and glass off.

“Elle…” I murmured. “Why? Why did you have to hurt yourself like this?”

@blue_topaz

I yanked my hands away, pain erupting from the open wounds the second water flowed over them. “Hurts..” I whispered, “Dont wash. Hurts. I—Colton—“

Inhaling deeply, I glued my eyes to the floor. “I would never do that. Kill you, I mean. Ever. It was just my fear—You don’t need to worry that—that I’ll—“

I cut her off by kissing her, my wet hands on her shoulders. When I pulled away, I looked at her in the eyes.

“I know,” I said to her gently. “I’m not afraid. I’m not scared of it. I’m not afraid of you hurting me, Elle. That’s not my fear.”

@blue_topaz

I stared down at my bloody, cut up hands, unable to raise my eyes and meet his.

“Then—Then what is your fear?”
