The orderly nodded. "Well, he definitely got shot. Have you called the police?"

She shook her head, "Not yet. I was too busy helping him into the car then driving here."

He nodded, shaking his head. "Well, thank you for your time. You can go now, if you choose. Horrible thing to happen…" He began walking back to the main entrance to the emergency room, clipboard at his side. "

Maddie sighed, deciding to wait to make sure Lee was okay. Not like she had anything better to do anyway. She took a seat in the waiting room, taking out her phone to pass the time while she waited.

After a good hour, a doctor walks out, his hands clasped behind his back. "Is there someone here for Lee?"

Maddie’s head shot up and she stood, still slightly cramped from the position she had been in, “Yeah, that would be me. Is he okay?”

"As okay as a person shot in the leg can be. It passed right through his thigh, missed all of the major arteries. Best case scenario, for sure," he said with a small smile. "Would you like to see him?"

Maddie nodded, “Yes, please. If it’s no trouble.”

"Follow me," he said, opening the heavy doors that led to the patient area.

Maddie bit her lip as she did as she wasn’t told, following the doctor through the white halls of the hospital.

He was in the third room to the right, his leg held up my an intricate set of wires and pulleys to keep him as comfortable as possible. He still wore his shirt, but the wounded leg's pant sleeve had been cut sloppily by a pair of scissors, close enough that it looked like booty shorts. His eyes were squinted slightly from the pain meds, but he still gave a sleepy smile to Maddie when she walked in. "Did I make that good of a first impression?"

Maddie rolled her eyes and shook her head slightly, though a soft smile graced her lips, “Shut up, hotshot,” She pulled up a chair next to his bed, taking a worried glance at his leg, “Thanks again, for what you did. How are you feeling?”

"I'm so doped up that I feel like I'm on a cloud," he said, rubbing his eyes. "Although I'm sure shit will go sour when it runs out."

Maddie nodded a little, followed by a sigh, “That’s true. I’m sure they’ll give you some more pain meds later.”

He nodded, looking down at the bear stain on his shirt. "How are you feeling?"

She shrugged, pulling own knee up into the seat and resting her arms on it, “Fine, I think.”

"You think?"

“A little shaken up about the whole thing, but in general, fine.”

He nodded. "I can understand that. The only reason why I wasn't pissing my pants is because that's happened before. It's those damn cold nights. Bring nothing but trouble."

Maddie sighed, “And this is one of the reasons I don’t go out. I should have trusted my gut and stayed home.”

He shrugged. "I don't have that luxury. A job's a job."

“How long have you been working there?”

"'Bout a year. Pays pretty well, but just a rough place."

Maddie nodded a little in understanding, “How many times has something like that happened?”

"This is probably the 3rd or 4th time, although it's the first time someone brought a gun."

She shivered a little, “Annnnd that’s the last time I ever let myself be dragged to a bar.”

"Definitely. Where even was your friend?"

“Off in the corner making out with some drunk guy.” She shrugged.

He nodded. "I saw hem. I was about to get them to leave. Her man was a little…handsy."

Maddie snorted, “Maybe more then a little.
