Lilly grinned at the lack of reply and walked into her art classroom. "Hey Ned!" She waved to the teacher. As the youngest teacher, Ned Armstrong preferred to create a bond with students so they may feel safe and inclusive in this simple art room.

Kai pulled Laura through the school and out into the parking lot, digging around with her free hand for her keys.

Laura's hair fell in front of her face as they ran. She didn't mind: it was like her own personal curtain from the world.

Kai unlocked the passenger door of her truck and held it open for Laura. "We heading to Lucky's."

She got in and whispered, "Thanks."

Kai nodded and shut the door, making her way around to her own side, starting up the engine and flipping off the school as they pulled out. "Hate that building."

"Is that why you don't go to any of your classes?" she asked hesitantly.

"One of the many reasons." Kai responded. It wasn't made too obvious, but she was willing to expand on that if Laura needed,

"Oh," she said softly.

Kai sighed, glancing over at Laura. "I don't like the way they teach, and the useless information. There are better things the students could be doing with their time. Plus-"

She looked over at her curiously. "Plus…?"

Her grip on the steering wheel tightened, knuckles going white. Slipping up already? Stay vague stay vague stay- "It keeps the negative focus on me, and not Ava."

Laura remembered the name Ava from somewhere. Kai must've mentioned her before a couple times. But Laura didn't want to be rude and pry, so she just nodded and looked at her hands, which were folded in her lap on top of her notebook.

"My little sister, if you were wondering. She's my foster family's bio kid."

"Oh," Laura said quietly.

Laura's fingers drummed on her notebook to the song stuck in her head.
