Pierre was kept in the tent for two more days, before he was allowed to get up. Since his legs were just fine, the doctor's only instructions were to put no stress on his inflicted arm; it was strung up in a cast as well to help prevent any. Edonine had been particularly reclusive– either at Pierre's side like a meek leech, or hidden in their tent.

“What wasn’t your fault?” he asked quietly, “It’s been two days, love, and you still haven’t told me what happened.”

Her lips unwound from the tight line. She drew a quiet breath, "I was fighting," she spoke, "Two soldiers pulled me away into a barn. They.." she straightened her back, pressing her thumbs against her tear ducts. Her voice began to tremble. "They interrogated me, I gave them nothing, and. They took advantage of me. They–" Edonine looked away, "They just wanted to humiliate me by being exposed, til.. they saw I was a woman.."

Horror flooded his expression. Blood roared in his ears. His heart broke into a million tiny shards for the woman beside him.

“Oh my god…” he breathed, his hand flying to his mouth. “Edonine—“

Edonine shook her head, some tears dripping from her eyelids. "They didnt– I can't, I can't concieve, they didn't have much time before one of our own saved me." She whispered. "He promised not to tell anyone I was a woman, but.. I'd hoped my first would have been you."

Pierre opened his arms to her, wanting nothing more than to hold and comfort his fiancée. "I'm so sorry…" he whispered, horror-struck, "I'm so sorry… I wish I could have been there to protect you… I promised I would protect you–but I didn't—"

"You're already doing what you can," Edonine murmured. She looked tired, deflated, defeated. Done with what the world was throwing at her.

She pulled her hair loose from the ribbon. "It's my fault," Edonine replied mutely, "I pay the consequences, for… being like.. this…"

@blue_topaz

Pierre shook his head firmly, horrified that she would say something like that. "No," he said firmly, "It will never be your fault."

"I just.. don't know if I'll be a good father…" he feared.

She got up and walked over to him, gently massaging his shoulders. "You will be."

@blue_topaz

"Would you follow me if I quit?" She asked.

Pierre masked his hesitation with a slow exhale. "I will follow you after Louis is safe and no longer held captive by the British."

@KalamariCakes

"So if I go, you would stay," Edonine spoke rather bluntly. Yes, she was still hurting, afraid, and it made her harsher than the warm, determined woman he came to love.
