"Then stay. Do whatever you want, John," she said softly.

"No," she answered before another contraction hit. She squeezed her eyes shut, gritted her teeth, and tried not to squeeze John's hand too tightly. This was the worse one yet.

She smiled faintly. Her love for him was what kept her going through the endeavor.

She did as best she could. A scream came from her lips.

It'd feel like an eternity to Jane, one of debilitating pain. But to Chadine, it was over in an instant—Jane could hear her child's outcry break through the painful fog. There.. she was done. She was a mother now.

She breathed a faint sigh of relief and smiled weakly.

@KalamariCakes

Chadine's brows stayed furrowed– she simply swaddled the child, and laid the baby in her mother's arms, still wet and attached to his mother with the cord. A boy.. an infant boy, her son.

John came back, triumphantly holding an apple– til he realized he just missed the birth of his first child by a hair.

Jane looked up, holding her son against her chest protectively. "John…" she whispered happily.

@KalamariCakes

He blinked a few times, expression going slack with a flood of emotion. "Oh.. oh. Jane," he breathed and rushed forward. Not too fast though, both nervous and overjoyed. Their son's cries kept pulling on strong and almost deafening; good lungs on this kid. Chadine watched from the foot of the bed with a smile.

Jane gently rocked her baby. "Shh… quiet down, love. You're alright now." She looked up excitedly to John. "What should we name him?"

@KalamariCakes

"I don't.. know," he admitted, sinking beside his wife on the bed. He extended a hand ever so tenderly to his infant son. "Jane, he's so small…"

"He's a baby, John," she replied, rocking him gently in her arms as a loving mother would.

Their firstborn drew in a massive yawn through his tiny mouth, and finally his wailing drew to a sleepy quiet. His reddened hands curled up against his face.

John brushed his fingers across his son's forehead. "Do you.. like the name Ellis, Jane?"

Deleted user

"I do. It's sweet," she replied. Her eyes caressed her baby's face. He's wonderful. Just like his father.

@KalamariCakes

John snuggled himself against his wife, one arm behind her shoulders and the other ever so gently touching his son, seeming so wonderstruck. Chadine had left already to warm up some food for the exhausted mother.

"Ellis Jonathan André," Jane tested the name with a smile.

His opponent jerked his grip to Pierre's hair, something more painful and viable to force the enemy into submission. The earth felt so much cooler than the surrounding air, moist– from water or blood, he couldn't tell.

Pierre’s hands slipped in the slick mud, sending him sprawling beneath the enemy.

A warm smile crossed her husband's face. "Mm… I love you.. both of you.."

"I know," she whispered. "I love you too."

He heard his lover's voice. Just a faint little thing against the background of too much noise. And yet, she was too far away to save him, when his assailant—at their highest advantage of their open bayonet, left the man stabbed, clear through the meat of his left shoulder.

Chadine returned with a tray of fresh oats and sugar, "Here you go, Jane. Anything else?"

Pierre has felt pain before. Unimaginable pain, such as the explosion of electricity through his body when the lightning bolt had struck him, months ago. But this? This was infinitely worse. The possibility that he could die, right here, before he had the chance to marry the love of his life….

Edonine's hands shook him back to the present. Her eyes were full of panic, enough to make her face harden like stone, as she made a swift retreat for the trees with her fiancé in arms. Passing his peers, midfight, felt like an eternity. But that always happened when shock took over.
